The Search for God and Guinness by Stephen Mansfield is subtitled as a biography of the beer that changed the world. There is some substance to that, but there is much more to the book than just the story of the beer. Primarily you learn about the Guinness family, beginning in the 18th century with Arthur Guinness and continuing up through the present day. They were a remarkable family with a bright side and a dark side. The Guinnesses were noted for their efforts through the years to improve both living and working conditions for their employees. Social activism was a given for many of the family members through the generations. Then, like everybody else, they had some less successful family members who struggled. Mr. Mansfield covers both sides with an even hand.Religion played an important role in the family. Some family members were ministers, and most were supporters of a church in one form or another. I found it to be particularly interesting that Arthur Guinness was a fan of John Wesley in the early days of Methodism. You can tell from the religion areas of the book that Mr. Mansfield is extremely interested in faith and its impact on public life.The author points out that historians have tended to divide the Guinness family into the brewing Guinnesses, the banking Guinnesses, and the Guinnesses for God. All three groups are covered in the book. Readers of The Search for God and Guinness will learn about the famous beer, the business side of brewing, the great social improvements led by the Guinnesses, and the family itself. All in all, a very interesting book.

A lot of people might read this book expecting some bawdy history of the origins of the world famous Guinness beer, brewery and family. This author isn't known for that, and has made some interesting comments about books he's published in the past elsewhere. I see this book as little bit redemptive - not elevating beer as a drink for riotous living, but a medium for wealthy families to give back to the communities and people of all classes throughout times of strife and times of plenty. A lot of business elites in our current age would do well to adopt the attitudes of the Guinness family regarding providing for their workers, dealing with others and giving back to their communities while being humble in their own spirit. Ironically, beer and Christianity are joined in our Western History the way Jesus and Wine is in the Bible, and Mansfield's writing style makes this an easy, unoffensive read.Stephen Mansfield's next book in his series of 'The Faith of' our presidents should be a greater challenge though.

To most people Guinness means dark malt consumed on St. Patrick's Day. This book covers the entire family called "Guinness" and all the marvelous things the various family members have engaged, from brewers to ministers, from a worldwide distribution of the product, to the missionary efforts of some of the members of the clan.Impressive are the efforts of the Guinness "company" to meet the needs of society and it's members, including housing, medical care and even cultural opportunities and training for the wives of the workers to be "successful" as women in that society and culture.Memorable Quote: "You cannot make money from people unless you are willing for people to make money from you."

Stephen Mansfield does it again! This is an excellent read about a famous family and their famous brand. Several take-aways from the Guinness story. Do one thing really, really well before you diversify. Invest in your people. Consider all the facts before you act, then act quickly. Think long-term rather than short-term. Always look for God's Providence and follow His will as best you can know it.

In general I enjoy reading business biographys. I personally bought this book to kill some time months ago and never thought I'd give it a good read. Turns out that once I started reading I finished the book and four days. It is a great story of business, and the 'do good spirit' of businesses in history. Also, I am not Guinness beer drinker so i read this not as a 'fan boy' but grew to love the story.

Every place has a food history, but I didn’t get that until I read this book. Perhaps it felt that there was no history because I live in what seems like the franchise food capital of the world, Overland Park, Kansas, next door to Kansas City. But Overland Park is named for the Overland Trail, and folks had to park their Conestoga wagons here while they got provisions for the long, franchise-free trek to the west. Provisioning is the heritage of this place, and that takes many forms: farmers’ markets, grocery stores, local specialty restaurants, and, of course, a lot of franchises.I buy corn (local) that can be husked at the store to complement the Copper River salmon (not local, obviously) bought at the same grocery store. That store got started in 1936. Who knew? Now every time I shop there I am aware of how I am entwined with a bit of history. And importing luxurious seafood is not new; in the late 1800’s it was fresh oysters that were in demand. Prohibition shut down breweries, but the craft beer movement re-inspired them. The writing helped me realize that the way we eat (and drink) is part of a continuum. If you think that something is new, you just haven’t looked deeply enough into the past.There is a lot packed into this book. The research was thorough and the writing engaging. I would have given another star if the maps had been bigger and clearer and if more maps had been included. I couldn’t find some key words in the index that would have made it easier to find sections I wanted to reread, so an even bigger index would have been nice.

Interesting information about many past restaurants in Kansas City. Wish they had even more of them included, missed some of the ones I used to visit

What a gorgeously written and thoroughly researched book not only on Kansas City's food history but on the food history really of the nation. I savored this book--worth every penny--for it is a beautifully told story of the human relationship with food and sustenance from the deepest roots in the heartland and crossroads of America. That Broomfield took the effort and time to go all the way to the beginning with Native American life and foodways and then all the way through the many layers since to the present offers a rare and remarkable accounting of the city and region's importance. This is what culinary histories ought to be. Bravo to Broomfield for her passion, research, and eloquence in sharing this important and hefty slice of American culinary history.

Anyone who grew up in Kansas City will love this food "biography" of the Cowtown. It's a great history as well.

Looks like a great book. But $38?? What makes it worth 3 times more than others.

About the Author

Richard DuFour, EdD, was a public school educator for thirty-four years, serving as a teacher, principal, and superintendent. During his nineteen-year tenure as a leader at Adlai E. Stevenson High School in Lincolnshire, Illinois, Stevenson was one of only three schools in the nation to win the US Department of Education Blue Ribbon Award on four occasions and the first comprehensive high school to be designated a New America High School as a model of successful school reform. He received his state's highest award as both a principal and superintendent. A prolific author and sought-after consultant, Rick is recognized as one of the leading authorities on helping school practitioners implement the Professional Learning Communities at Workâ„¢ process in their schools and districts. Rick wrote a quarterly column for the Journal of Staff Development for nearly a decade. He was the lead consultant and author of the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development's video series on principalship and the author of several other videos. Rick was named as one of the Top 100 School Administrators in North America by Executive Educator magazine, was presented the Distinguished Scholar Practitioner Award from the University of Illinois, and was the 2004 recipient of the National Staff Development Council's Distinguished Service Award. Douglas Reeves, PhD, is the author of more than thirty books and many articles about leadership and organizational effectiveness. This text is a treasure trove of practical information that can be applied immediately. They start with the simple premise that “States must create the expectation that the fundamental school structure consists of collaborative teams that take collective responsibility for student learning, rather than the isolated classroom teacher.” Then they go on to outline exactly how to achieve this. If every administrator in every school followed this advice all schools would improve.The authors provide practical steps and conditions that states, districts and schools should each take, but also address what they should stop doing! While they insightfully recommend a commitment to evidence, collaboration, and results, they also give detailed explanations of how to move this work forward, including helpful free resources like protocols to help practitioners.One of the most helpful sections for me was their discussion about how to move away from “Test-based Accountability,” to “Accountability as a Learning System.” They recommend thinking of “accountability indicators as hypotheses to be tested.” What a more productive way to think about accountability! As they outline, this book is all about transforming “opportunity into action.” If you want to improve...read this book!

In clear, compelling language and less than 150 pages the authors describe a common sense, and effective plan to implement an accountability system that will actually improve educational outcomes for students and empower teachers to become the central characters in the process. I know this because I have done it. Using the ideas in this volume we saw dramatic improvement in student achievement in our district, and that improvement was maintained for years. So what is the catch one might ask? The catch is that leaders are forced to replace dogma with data. The catch is that teachers must move from isolation to collaboration. These and other culturally imbedded changes are difficult, but not impossible. As the authors say at the end of the book- Do Now.

This book is an excellent resource for practitioners and policymakers. The authors review the history of NCLB and RTTT and the limitations of both federal legislative efforts that ultimately results in passage of ESSA. In their review, the authors inform readers of what has changed and what hasn’t changed in the ESSA.An important aspect of the ESSA is that it provides far more flexibility to create school improvement initiatives aligned with State and local needs. Challenges for practitioners and policymakers under ESSA include the development of a comprehensive accountability system and building the capacity of educators to sustain it over time. This book provides a blueprint to accomplish both.Now, as in the past, the importance of highly functioning, collaborative, and focused PLCs is front and center. The authors give a thorough review of the PLC process as the most effective way to respond to ESSA and as the foundation for all school improvement and accountability efforts. I was a bit leery about reading this one after reading a few other similar books, but I’m glad I did. Wow! You won’t believe the depth of information in this book. Best of all, the entire book is written in layman’s terms so that anyone can read it. You don’t need a medical background to comprehend this one, but can follow it without any problems. Simple diagrams and photos are spread throughout. Overall, I enjoyed it. It is quite thorough in everything.

This is the third edition and I have bought every edition. They are always adding to the amount of knowledge and useable information. I am a former paramedic and I can say this is a great textbook for disaster medicine. It is easy to understand and easy to use a reference. This would be a huge asset to anyone's library!

VERY COMPREHENSIVE AND THOROUGH.I don't have their previous editions, but from what I can gather, the authors have significantly expanded their scope in this 3rd edition. It won't make you a doctor, but it will equip you with the vital medical skills needed when there is little or no chance of finding a doctor. The book is written by a medical doctor and an advanced nurse practitioner. It is in layman's terms; all skills and procedures are explained in a simple, straightforward way. Topics include Preparedness; Cleanliness; Triage; Assessment; all manner of Infections; Natural Disasters; Maritime Survival; Biological Warfare & Radiation Sickness; Injuries; Bites; Chronic Medical Conditions such as management of Diabetes, Epilepsy, Heart Disease; CPR; Pregnancy; Anxiety & Depression; Dental Issues; Medication.The only downside I can find is the size and weight of the book (H229mm × W153mm × 39mm spine, mass = 1040g). (Approximately H 9" × W 6" × 1.5" spine, mass = 2.29lb). It's not the kind of weight you would like in your bug-out-bag, but all things considered, I would be comforted to know I had this resource close at hand. Maybe the publishers can use finer paper next time? At 671 pages (including photos and diagrams), this is a valuable, yet weighty reference book. Keep one on your bookshelf!!

So glad I found this book. I’ve looked at a number of books in this category and was disappointed by one I got recently that was written by a “survival” doctor. It directed me to go to the hospital just about every chapter. The Altons, however, are the real deal, and write as if some major event had completely eliminated all modern medical care. The book is easy to understand, and covers so many topics that it’s hard to imagine what they could have missed. I also like that they also include natural remedies throughout the book along with regular medical stuff. If you’re in the market for a real survival medicine book, this is the Gold Standard, as far as I’m concerned.

I would like to think that after reading this book I'm definitely more prepared than I was a month ago. I have a neighbor who is an ex-military medic. He says if a SHTF scenario ever took place there will be too type of individuals that will be vital for survival. Medics and ham operators. The doctor and his wife did a great job, the book is very straightforward and simplistic to decipher. This should be a book that every concerned well prepared individuals home.

Having been and EMT and Wilderness EMT for years, I didn't expect this book to provide me much, man was I wrong. This is THE BEST survival /prepper / homestead medical book hands down. You will not be disappointed. Get yours today!

I trained medics in the Army, so I may have a broader base than most. Yet, this will not only provide you with a great list of items to have on hand should SHTF, but also give you instruction for treating most of the injuries and illnesses you may encounter.

This is one of the most useful books in my studies, if not THE most useful. It was much thicker than I originally thought it would be. It covers everything from dehydration, low blood sugar and heat exhaustion to volcanos, amputations and active shooters. I highly recommend this for anyone preparing to go out in the wilderness far from civilization (for camping or whatever), to dangerous locations (like active volcanos), or anyone, like me, who plans on working in state parks or becoming a forest ranger. It's certainly very thorough and extensive.

This book is a good addition to a family medical library. It's based upon the assumption that certain catastrophes (e.g. natural disasters, nuclear war) may leave you and your family isolated from the medical community for a long time. Hence, the book is packed with medical information needed to treat others in an environment where pharmacies are unavailable and trained medical personnel are otherwise occupied or dead. One thing this book isn't: a guide to amateur surgery. There are some things that cannot be done without years of specialized medical training, no matter how desperate the circumstances. Another thing this book isn't: A stand alone compendium of medical knowledge. If your intent is to build a good prepper's medical library, you'll want to supplement it with a Merck Manual (there's one written in plain English), as well as texts dealing specifically with anatomy, drugs (prescription and OTC), and a text geared to symptom identification. Please be advised this book will be of comparatively little value if you don't read it and follow its stockpiling recommendations for supplies, equipment, and medications.
