Destined for an Early Grave was not what I was expecting at all. And that's in a bad way. I put it off for three years after being spoiled by a major event, but while reading, knowing that it was coming didn't even bother me because everything else that was happening was so ridiculous. When it starts we find Cat and Bones trying to have a relaxing vacation. Unfortunately, Cat is having some strange dreams, which are more than just dreams. Soon they find themselves in Paris where another vampire known as the Dreamsnatcher is hoping to get his hands on Cat.I am just very disappointed in Destined for an Early Grave. It honestly reads like random filler. It doesn't fit the tone of the series thus far at all. Gregor is such a dull villain, and he comes out of nowhere! Suddenly there's this vampire with the very powerful talent to pull people out of their dreams and he just wants to have Cat as his bride. Um, okay? Of course there has to be a prophecy surrounding Cat which makes her that much more appealing, but seriously, this guy just wants her because.I don't feel like Destined for an Early Grave moves the series plot along at all. It was like some detour where one person wants to see some obscure landmark that no one cares about, and then you get lost on the way back to the main road, drive in a circle, and end up right where you started. There was no point to any of this at all. The only important event was that thing I was spoiled on which happens toward the end. That will actually have ramifications for the rest of the series. That whole mess with Gregor....will not. I'm going to pretend that it never happened.

Okay here it goes....I started off REALLY loving this series. It was the first time in a very long time that I was really excited to find a book that I was totally captivated by. But after a while, there are so many unbelievable dynamics that develop that I can't keep overlooking them. After the last few books, I was actually excited to see Frost taking a risk by introducing a character like Gregor and the dynamic that she was introducing. I felt like this was going to be the turning point that made things exciting again, but at the end when it came down to it, I felt like she backtracked. Cat is by far the best character in this series and it's like Frost just wanted to make her a love sick puppy who throws out her better judgement. Cat is a headstrong hero, she doesn't take nonsense from anyone. So when she refused to stand up for herself especially during one pivotal moment, I just couldn't justify any of her characters actions anymore. There were so many opportunities for the characters to communicate, but it seemed that the perpetual misconceptions and intentional disregard for one another just served as a plot device to get the characters where Frost wanted them to be. So for a series that started off strong, I have to say that I am extremely disappointed with where it ended up.

WOW, that's what I can say about this book. If u haven't read the other 5 books first before this one then u will not understand what I'm going to say and for those who have then u will. I had to stop off and on during the first part of the book because I was very upset what was happening and what I thought would happen, then it happened in the middle and I was heartbroken, mad and very upset about it. I could not put the book down, I was obsessed, because I wanted and hoped that what I was thinking was going to be wrong, but I didn't know and had to find out. And in the end I was so relieved that my heart was not broken anymore. I tell u Jeaniene Frost, u had me in a rage in this book, so heartbroken and it was in such suspense that I could not stop reading. Very good book and I hope the other ones does not do this to me again.....

What just happened? Books one through three were all solid five star books for me. But this one was almost intolerable...I'm not going to spoil the story for everyone else but suffice it to say that I cringed through more than 50% of this book. Bones and Cat were constantly at each other's throats. Sorry - but that's not romantic - or enjoyable. Bones was almost not even recognizable in this book. And Cat took annoying, stubborn and stupid to new levels. When Bones cussed her out about 3/4 of the way through I wanted to give him a high five. For my part, I would have enjoyed this book a lot more if (1) it had been edited down for all the scenes that really did nothing to move the story along or seemed overly dramatic / unnecessary and (2) Bones and Cat had worked more together than against each other. It seems to me that this book could have achieved its main objectives (not going to spoil it - you'll know what they are when it's done) without all the antagonism between Bones and Cat. Really - it killed the romance - left me feeling blah about these two. That's so sad, because I adored these two together in the first three books. Their actions seemed way too out of character. All I can is that I'm glad it's over and I can move on to the next one in the hopes that Bones and Cat work together again and not against each other.

Case for Progressive Dispensationalism, The

From the Back Cover

Debate abounds on the future of Israel and Israel's relation to the church, not only between dispensationalists and non-dispensationalists, but among dispensationalists themselves. In the past that debate has sometimes been acrimonious, and proponents of the differing viewpoints have found little common ground. In recent years, however, views have been modified and developed so that the dialogue is increasingly by cooperation and a mutual exploration of diverse ideas. The Case for Progressive Dispensationalism is intended to enlighten the debate in that same irenic spirit. The book is solidly dispensational in perspective in affirming that the Old Testament prophecies are completely fulfilled in the future, that the nation of Israel has a prophetic future, and that Israel is not the church. Dr. Saucy departs from classic dispensationalism, however, in showing that (1) the fulfillment of Old Testament prophecy begins in the present church age, and (2) the church is not a parenthesis in God's program but represents a continuity with the Old Testament messianic program. This modified dispensationalism seeks to satisfy many of the objections of non-dispensational approaches to eschatology while retaining the crucial elements of biblical interpretation that characterize dispensational thought.

This is not a review of the content of the book, which if you are interested in the topic you will likely enjoy. This book has more typos and errors than any kindle book I have ever purchased. There were sections where there typos on every page, and sometimes multiple typos. I would expect this from a free book, but not one that costs 17$, and especially not for an academic work such as this. Whoever made this kindle book needs to do some serious editing of it.Again, as far as content, it can be difficult to make it through this book, but the best part is that you are reading source material for each view and not relying on the opposing view to state what the other view is.

Good summary of the progressive interpretation. Not a sequential commentary; so it's good to know Biblical prophecy and the traditional dispensationalist viewpoint BEFORE reading this book.

Progressive Dispensationalism (abbreviated "PD") is a paradigm (model) useful for interpreting Scripture. It is in most ways similar to traditional Dispensationalism because it recognizes a special future for genetic Israel in the future Millennial Kingdom.PD has a number of proponents, all with their unique twists. Saucy's version of PD is probably the closest to the traditional Dispensational viewpoint. Saucy, like other PDs, sees a limited fulfillment of Old Testament Millennial prophecies in the church. Saucy writes,"...the present age is only the inauguration and partial fulfillment of the prophecies."Early on, Saucy argues that the literal tabernacle (for example) was a type fulfilled in Christ. The literal then the spiritual. OT prophecy regarding the Kingdom Age is the mirror image: some of them, at least, are first fulfilled spiritually in the church and then literally as promised to Israel during the Millennium. A spiritual application does not preclude a literal fulfillment.Saucy then demonstrates that this is how the NT authors quote the OT prophecies of the conversion of the gentiles (and apply them to the church). Whether it be the End Time prophecy of Joel quoted in Acts 2, or the New Covenant, the NT authors' use of the OT is problematic with Traditional Dispensationalism. The problem evaporates when a PD hermeneutic is applied.Yet the NT authors expected a literal fulfillment of the prophecies given to Israel, terminology unchanged (thus exposing the problem with Covenant and replacement viewpoints). Again, the problem is solved with a PD hermeneutic.Besides its 12 chapters, the book is divided into 4 main sections: Introduction, The Present Age and Old Testament Prophecy, The Church in Salvation History, and The Place of Israel. All in all, a fine work worth reading (for the theologian, pastor, or layman who has serious interest in this area). This is a theological book and written in a style that will be cozy for theologians and Bible students, but probably a stretch for the average layman. From my own perspective, I think a Messianic Jewish perspective adds a richness to these sorts of discussions that is absent from more mainstream evangelical scholarship. Still, a top-notch work. Highly recommended, especially for those few nasty dispensationalists who try to characterize PD as Covenant Theology (not true).

With all the emphasis that John MacArthur and Fred Malone [opposing views] are making concerning progressive dispensationalism (JM's view) and covenantalism (FM's view) it would be good for us to understand the 'update' that has occurred. The following review comments create great expectations for what we can learn:"For those who want a clear and scholarly presentation of this "newer" type of dispensationalism (i.e., progressive dispensationalism) that has gained much ground within conservative evangelical circles should look to this book. Saucy's book is filled with the desire to be faithful to the Scriptures and to uphold God's glory.""Particularly useful is Saucy's examination of Romans 11. He makes a convincing case why Paul was referring to national Israel rather than "spiritual" or "remnant" Israel in the passage. Also, Saucy's discussion of why Israel must still have a role to play in God's revelatory and salvific program is convincing (God still needs Israel to carry out His revelatory and salvific purposes). Overall, this book is a good starter for those seminarians who want a good understanding of this developing system."For that reason, I have purchased this book.

The Bible interprets the Bible and when it is allowed to as it does in this book the case for progressive dispensationalism is proven, Alas many trees and much ink has been wasted to try to prove him wrong.

In great shape. Thank you!

Images & Shadows: Part of a Life (Nonpareil Book, 82), by Iris Origo

From Kirkus Reviews

Without any intention ``to convert, to reveal, or to confess,'' accomplished biographer Origo (The Merchant of Prato, etc.) records her unique memories, first published in England in 1970, of a privileged, intellectual, cosmopolitan life early in this century. Born into an international family, Origo spent her childhood years between her paternal grandparents' estate in Westbrook, Long Island, her maternal grandparents' home in Great Britain, and her mother's villa in Fiesole. Although her father died early, he made sure his daughter grew up devoid of limiting national identity and open to different cultural influences. Her mother instilled a passion for travel and books. While grateful to her family for the comfort and care they provided, Origo portrays certain aspects of her upbringing with restrained criticism. Her proper British mother, for instance, insisted on Origos private education by governesses and tutors, opposed her desire to enroll in university, and committed her to a tasteless, nauseatingly ``healthy'' diet. In hindsight, Origo considers her period of ``coming out'' into high society a considerable waste of time. Readers, however, will appreciate her colorful accounts of balls and theater visits as a glimpse of elite diversions in bygone days. Origo's descriptions of early 20th-century American magnates and patrons of the arts and her detailed reconstruction of Italian landowners' traditional life are among many other engaging passages. Sketching her own character in an irreproachably modest tone, she commands respect for her ability to apply her superb education, knowledge of the world, and financial means to worthy causes. She helped modernize devastated farmland in Tuscany, volunteered in the Red Cross during WWII, and sheltered orphaned children at her home after the war. This active, creative attitude arises out of Origo's profound sense of being ``singularly fortunate,'' despite some personal tragediesa rare and therefore doubly appealing trait. Along with its exquisite style and thought-provoking digressions on the philosophy of writing, this autobiography documents fascinating experiences of the modern European and American aristocracy. From the Back Cover

Iris Origo was born in 1902 and was instantly catapulted into a life of "unfair advantages of birth, education, money, environment and opportunity." But she used this birth-right wisely, and her legacy includes a string of books beloved and admired equally by historians, biographers, and readers. Origo's mother, Lady Sybil Cuffe, married William Bayard Cutting in 1901, and when the family was not traveling to the far corners of the earth, Iris spent her youth in the ancestral estate on Long Island and in her grandfather's castle in Ireland. Her father died tragically when she was eight, and she continued her peripatetic life with her indefatigable mother and beloved governess. A woman who always knew her mind, in 1923 Origo bought La Foce, an entire valley, almost feudal in organization, in the Val d'Orcia of Tuscany. There for fifty years she worked tirelessly with her husband, improving the land and the lot of the peasants, saving endangered children from the brutal incursions of the Nazis, and writing history and memoirs that are still considered classics of the genre. Origo was at once a woman of action and introspection, of boundless curiosity and endearing innocence. She wrote beautifully, thoughtfully, and lucidly. As Raymond Mortimer once observed of this book, "A masterly biographer here recounts her own story . . . and in this biography she is at her best." "A small classic of autobiography . . . Origo recreates the lost mad wold of Bernard Berenson and the Anglo-American artistic coterie in Florence. She is marvelous at nuances of place and personality, writing with a subtle mingling of candor and affection that lingers in the mind." -- Fiona MacCarthy

I purchased this book after visiting The Villa Medici's enchanted garden; the garden of Iris Origo's early life. I wanted to learn about the person who grew in this inspired and inspiring place. What was her life? This is a book one can read at one sitting, or open anywhere to enjoy her evocative writing. It's not just about the love and planning of gardens, but also about the vicissitudes of her family life. life.

Iris Origo had a difficult, if not charmed, childhood. Her education was unusual yet thorough. Her marriage was not the norm for her social standing yet worked. Her steadfastness during WWII (Please read her war diary) invoked a strong, sensitive woman who did not become afraid in the face of the horrors that came to the farm.

I read this book and "War in Val d'Orcia" which lead me to my current stay at the Tuscan farm "La Foce" (lafoce.com). It is a wonderful story and Iris Origo's background is remarkable. I came here as a sort of pilgrammage after reading the book. It is also a great location for visiting the hilltop Tuscan towns like Montepulciano, Montalcino, Orvieto etc.

I haven't read the book yet; bought it for my husband, the greatest of Italy fans who could not put it down from the moment it arrived. He finished it and now wants to go see Origo's houses in Tuscany and Long Island. He had already read her diary and loved it. He loved this even more; had many asides to tell about as he read it. The extremely wealthy Origo family should be recognized for their compassion for those less fortunate than they and are a great family to emulate, he says.

Lovely recounting of one's life and social influences molding the character of this brave and humane woman who believed personal success was based on helping others.

I found Images & Shadows by Iris Origo fascinating.. Coming from such a wealthy family she was so modest and unassuming. I also purchased the coffee table book with stunning pictures of the estate in Tuscany. Definitely books worth owning.

wonderful

After reading War in Val d'Orica I was anxious to read more of her books. This was a great disappointment, she spent half of the book on endless details of her relatives and complaining about her shallow privileged life. The chapter on Writing was dull and the book didn't become interesting till page 199.I am happy I did not buy more of her books.Pat Sica

This calendar unfolds to a pop-up castle. Each day of Advent, you open a flap and punch out a paper character to stand up amidst the castle, beginning with Olive. But unfortunately, all attempts to open flaps or get the new piece out shake everything else off the board, meaning you get to set it all up again every day. I gave up and threw it away yesterday (December 20), so I have no idea what the last pieces are, and I feel no regret about that.

You need a big surface to display. This is the only con. I bought it for my 19 years old son. This is his favorite Christmas movie. You need to be careful not to lose the pieces. I wouldn't recommend for children under 8. It comes with a record style sleeve to keep it all together.

The magic and wonder begin when you open the calendar, which is folded in half inside a sleeve. A detailed 3-D "Santa's Workshop" appears, along with panels for each of the days leading up to (and including) Christmas. I had a little involuntary giggle when the workshop opened up--it's really cute.Behind each of those panels is a small paper fold-up figurine, usually only about an inch tall, starting with Olive herself. At the beginning of advent she seems pretty lonely in the Arctic landscape, but by the time Christmas rolls around, she'll have a lot of company. There are some great little surprises, too, which I won't spoil.I think this was the cutest, and most fun, advent calendar I've ever done. I was tempted to keep it after Christmas was over. It was really sort of magical.I would worry about doing the calendar in a family with small kids (under about age five, I guess) because the little cardboard figures are pretty small, and not very sturdy: rough handling could ruin them pretty quickly. But for an adult who wants to feel like a kid? It's GREAT.

My kids are having fun opening this every morning. We have read the book and watched the movie....I think you may appreciate the cute charecters more if you have seen the movie. This is a wonderful alternative advent calendar.

So cute! Great for kids (and adults) with food allergies! We used our last calendar for three years, but so cute we got a new one this year!

My daughter and I loved the movie and the pop up book so thought this would be wonderful as an advent calendar. This arrived in good shape shrink wrapped and was shipped in a box but we are quite disappointed when we opened it. Each of the lift flaps are already lifted up (but book is new since was shrink wrapped. There is no surprise since you could already see the little paper characters pieces underneath. By the way, the little paper characters are quite small and stand by separating one little paper tab in opposite directons...meh... This is for a table display so you can't help but face the open little flaps. Would not buy again.

This and the book were a December gift for a 5 year old relative. I am told he loves it--although not as much as he loved the $45 Lego calendar last year!!

Very cute little calendar. My daughter enjoyed it very much.

Motorcycle Journeys Through the Alps and Beyond: 5th edition

Review

John Hermann, a.k.a. The King of the Alps, has ridden every motorcycle-worthy pass in the Alps, and is positively addicted to the practice. I will boast that I have been riding the Alps longer than he has, since I began in 1957 on my NSU 250, when the 6,800-foot Monte Giovo Pass (Jaufenpass in German) was still dirt. And I have been back many, many times, but Hermann has dedicated himself to riding every road and has been over passes that are still on my to-do agenda. On his pass-bagging list he has over 300 passes, and maybe I've been on 200 of them. This Alpine chain of mountains curves for some 700 miles from the French Riveria through Switzerland, Germany, Austria and Italy all the way over to Slovenia on the Adriatic Sea, and Hermann covers 75 different routes in these mountains, which are grouped into 20 sections. A section would be a part of the Alps where you might want to stay a few days. Each route is well-described, and if there is a Gasthaus on top of the pass where you can get a cup of hot cocoa, that is detailed. Some passes have a day of the week on which motorcyclists congregate, and he tells you that. In each section he mentions hotels he has enjoyed. Reading this book will have you counting the days until you leave. - Clement Salvadori, RiderMagazine.com

If you're an American, and use this book as a reference.....surprise..I don't know how old the info is, but Europe is not as decribed here.99â„… can be paid by credit card.Finding an up to date paper map is lot looking for teeth in a hen.Hotels are on line. We book rooms while drinking coffee og sitting on the toilet. The European middle class is affluent and this is reflected in the prices. We drink tap water and have shower curtains...etc. Drink and drive is a no go.Big breakfasts are rare.Always check if your hotel takes credit cards. Some only take cash, and give no receipts. Mastercard is American.....not always popular. Visa is accepted more often. American Express can be used for scraping ice off the windscreen. Many of the listed routes are jam packed with traffic. The traffic has increased enormously the last few years.Don't discuss US politics....Traffic violations are fined beyond belief. A minor speeding ticket can easily be more 500 USD.Have a great trip !

Bought this after a receiving a recommendation from a fellow rider on ADVRider.com. This book is literally jam packed full of the best roads in the Alps and the author does a fantastic job of breaking things down into manageable chunks and rides. Really solid travel companion!

The book provided helpful tips regarding local roads, sites to see and details regarding customs and lodging throughout the regions covered. Well researched. Will be very helpful when I embark on explorations this riding season.

Very valuable information, well illustrated and will prove helpful on an upcoming trip.

fun book!

These books are amazingly detailed and full of information. I am just jealous because the multi-talented author has had the opportunity to ride so many roads and visit so many towns and villages throughout the Alps. Highly recommend it.

For all of the buzz about this book and the "King of the Alps" claim, this book is disappointing on many levels.I have no idea about what's available in the UK. I'm not aware of any other US produced Alps guides, making this book the only one easily found in the US. Despite the comments that follow, the book is about the only choice for planing a trip in any part of the Alps. ("The Alps" is a huge area from the Spanish/French border and into Slovenia - it's not "only" France, Switzerland, and Austria/Northern Italy)Place names... I'll work with the German speaking parts of Switzerland, Austria, and the Italian South Tirol. The Southern Tirol is in Italy but 60% of the population speaks German. Place names exist in German and Italian. This complicated for many people. For example, Jaufenpass in German is Passo di Monte Giovo in Italian. Some passes, like Jaufenpass are usually known by their German name while others, such as Passo dello Stelvio, are known by their Italian name. The same thing happens with place names. Reschensee in German is Lago di Resia in Italian. Hermann uses the Italian names and sometimes mentions the German names. Some maps use both, some use one or the other. This leaves the reader to sort out which place is which, depending on the language used. While the book lists a huge list of passes, the number of passes described in any measure is far less. And those descriptions often lack any real detail. Passo dello Stelvio / Stilfserjoch is a good example of this. There is one road up and over the pass, as usual. The distinction is the east road (coming from Prato Allo Stelvio / Prad am Stilfserjoch) was built originally by the Austrians (when South Tirol was part of Austria). It's still in good repair. However, what really matters is this road has 48 hairpins on the way up. For riders new to hairpins, this is not the place to start learning. The west road, towards Bormio, has fewer hairpins, a few tunnels, and the road usually is under repair or should be (Hermann does mention this). He says something about the "Austrian" road is often closed. Perhaps in early spring or late fall (definitely closed during the winter), but otherwise, rain, sun, fog... it's open. He says there are a couple of hotels on the pas, and lists two; there are four immediately on the pass' saddle and two or three more while coming up from Prato/Prad. He's correct that the top of the pass seems like a circus, with lots of motorcycles, bicycles, cars, campers, and more. But it's part of the fun of climbing "Stelvio". And he misses on one of the institutions: Bruno's wurst stand. Bruno stands under the yellow awning over his grill, turning out great wursts, with all kinds of toppings including Louisiana hot sauce, all while delivering a non-stop monologue in at least four languages. Not every pass is worthy of or needs this sort of detail. But the "big name" passes are often shortchanged, and so is the reader. The maps, accompanying a chapter about a collection of passes, are little more than a rough idea of where the passes are. There's no detail (route numbers, if available) about the roads with passes. Converting the pass locations to GPS-friendly locations is a challenge. And some pass names don't make it to a map, but are mentioned only as "go over passes A, B, and C to get to Some Big Pass". Finding international borders is another challenge - they're small and faint. Crossing from Austria to Italy or Germany is almost unnoticed. In some places crossing into Switzerland is, too, but in some places, it's very much "passport please". It's worth knowing which border is being crossed. His descriptions favor biker (that is, rider) hotels, bike cafes, and biker meeting points. That's fine for people who want to join a mob of riders, but some people want to settle down somewhere for a little less chaos and maybe talk with only a couple of riders. Those places get far less mention. In general, hotels tend towards the expensive. They offer spas, massages, a pool, workout rooms, and more, on top of the restaurant / dining room. If all that's needed is a place to get cleaned up and get some rest, there are far less expensive, but still quite good, alternatives. Those details are limited. There is some other "how the local folks do it" material that is... well, maybe that's how it looks to a foreigner, but it's not correct. And then there's the language issue.I don't speak Italian, or French, but I do speak German. Hermann simply has, in very specific ways, little respect for the language. German contains four letters not used in English. These letters, "a", "o", and "u" (I hope Amazon gets this right - ä ö ü) all have two dots over them, the "umlaut". They are as important as "a", "o", and "u" are in English. But Hermann dismisses them as somehow quaint and not needed. That is simply not true. For anyone who can't write or type the letters, the accepted form is to add an "e" after the umlauted letter to make "ae", "oe", and "ue". However he spells Flüelapass (or Flueelapass) as Fuelapass. Most search engines will quickly tell anyone using them that "Fluelapass" is misspelled. (The four letter looks like this:ß or like an unusual "B". It represents two S' together. The most common example is to see it used for the S' in "strasse" - street. This letter is used less and less, and can be safely ignored. But if it shows up somewhere, it's useful to know about it.)The final point is about the index. It's confusing. Going back to Passo dello Stelvio/Stilfserjoch, the index lists it (as Stelvio pass) on pages 164-166, 169, 171, 175, 178. Pages 164-166 have the written description, but photos continue to 167. Page 169 has the map including Stelvio. If pages 171, 175, 178 have the word Stelvio on them, I can't find it. Stilfserjoch gets one entry, 164, even though 164-167 are about the same place. The book is usable, but I don't recommend regarding it as the final word on the Alps. Use touring and adventure web sites to find people who've been there. Consider looking for British guides, often available on the web in the usual selling sites. As the countries' tourist information offices for information - as always, web search engines are very helpful. For those who speak even a little German and know about on-line language translators, there's an excellent series of German guides available on Amazon. Follow my reviews for more information about them. However, in the end, Motorcycle Journeys Through the Alps is flawed, but better than nothing...

This is one book you can't be without if you plan on doing any riding in the Alps. It makes you want to sell everything and move to Europe! Great detail and route maps.
