Book leaves me shaking my head just thinking about all the sickos out there. Examples like "Harv the Hammer", Armin the cannibal, and Lisa Marie Montgomery's giving of a lethal c-section hit too close to home and simply leaves me ill. Book highlights (or lowlights might be a better term) 33 of the worst offenders in short order with an active table of content in seemingly random order. Hard to say I really enjoyed the material, but does provide a couple of chapters on how law enforcement hunts the criminals and on internet safety which makes it an informative read. Had enough detail as for my liking and certainly hope they keep these characters out of circulation where they can't do any further harm!

Social Media Monsters: True Stories of Internet Killers by R. J. Parker and J. J. Slate is a compendium of 33 stories about monsters who use the Internet to locate, lure, stalk, and exploit their victims. Many of these stories are about serial killers who have been with us for a long time, but who are now able to use the efficiency of social media sites and chat rooms to lure their victims to their deaths. The book also includes sections on how law enforcement is now using the Internet in their effort to solve, and even prevent, criminal activity, and a useful section on effective ways to protect yourself when using the Internet.A compelling read that exposes an area of criminality that knows no boundaries, and which no one is safe from. After reading this book, you’ll think twice about accepting that ‘Friend’ request from a stranger. Must-reading for anyone who uses the Internet.

Interesting but I like stories more in depth. However, if you have kids who use social media it is a good book to read and discuss appropriately with your kids. After reading this I was sitting in a hair salon with my daughter. I took a picture of a nice looking boy from a magazine and sent it to her. I acted as if I was the boy and wanted to get to know her. After, we discussed how easy it is for someone to fake an identity using social media. She was kind of surprised.

This is an interesting compilation of crimes committed by using the internet, such as via Facebook and Craigslist. Most of us who use the internet on a daily basis take it very much for granted. We seem to forget that we are sharing private information on a public forum. We've heard about girls (and boys) being targeted by predators on Facebook and people being murdered when they respond to a Craigslist ad. Still we feel safe sitting in front of our computers and other electronic devices. The cases cited in this book should be a wake-up call to remind us to be aware and be vigilant. Pay attention to what information you're sharing with the big bad world.

This was an interesting read. I knew about the dangers of the internet but I was really surprised at some of the social media that is mention it this book. I was also surprised when some the monsters were caught and how short the time they got for doing what they did. This collection showed how it didn't matter how close or how far the monsters lived form their prey if they wanted it they were willing to go to any lengths to get it. Now when I am on some of these sites, especially the dating sites I stop and think can this person I be talking to be one the monsters.

Authors provide a list of scenarios where perpetrators used social media to find their victims. Most of them used fake ads or profiles to get people to contact them and as simple as placing babysitting advertisement and waiting. It provides credible warning that one may never know whose on the other end of an ad, profile, or blog and parents must protect and teach children internet safety just as importantly as looking both ways before crossing a street.

This is one of the most informative books of it's time. Would use it to teach my granddaughters that not everybody are as "kind" as they seem online. Well written and researched. Even at the end with the epilogue on how the police find these predators is fascinating and informative.I was given a free copy of this book in exchange for a honest and fair review.

This book is terrible... its poorly written. Some of the stories are only 3 pages long. And some of the cases haven't even gone to trial yet. Also there's no pics. I was very disappointed.

About the Author

Carol Kendall is a research hydrologist in the Water Resources Division of the U.S. Geological Survey. Since 1990, she has been chief of the "Isotope Tracers of Hydrologic and Biogeochemical Processes" project in Menlo Park, California. The purpose of this research project is to develop new methods, concepts, and applications of environmental isotopes to solve problems of national importance. She received her B.S. and M.S. in Geology from the University of California (Riverside), and her Ph.D. in Geology from the University of Maryland. Her main background is in isotope hydrology and aqueous geochemistry. Kendall is coordinator and main instructor of the 5-day Isotope Hydrology training course taught almost yearly for the USGS, and frequently teaches other short-courses. The main focus of isotopic heterogeneity in shallow systems on determining recharge mechanisms, tracing sources and reactions of nitrate in surface waters and groundwaters using oxygen and nitrogen isotopes, and applying a multi-isotope (O,H,C,N,S,Sr) approach to studying watershed hydrology and biochemistry. She has recently become fascinated with "isotope biomonitoring" --the idea of using isotopes of organisms as integrators of environmental conditions at the landscape-scale, including providing information about sources of nutrients in human-impacted environments.Jeffrey J. McDonnell is Professor of Hydrology at the State University of New York, College of Environmental Science and Forestry. He received his B.Sc. from the University of Toronto, M.Sc. from Trent University, and Ph.D. from the University of Canterbury. His background is in physical hydrology and geomorphology. His particular interests relate to the age, origin and pathway of subsurface stormflow and runoff processes in catchments. While working as an Assistant Professor at Utah State University, McDonnell began a working relationship with Kendall that continued for several years -- one that exploits their very different backgrounds and perspectives on catchment hydrology. McDonnell has been a Research Fellow at NASA, the Japanese Forestry and Forest Products Research Institute and Landcare New Zealand. He has received the Gordon Warwick Award from the British Geomorphological Research Group, the Horton Research Grant from the American Geophysical Union, Warren Nystrom Award from the Association of American Geographers, and the Commonwealth Scholarship and Fellowship from Canada. Prof. McDonnell was and Associate Editor for Water Resources Research (1996-1998) and is now an Associate Editor for Journal of Hydrology and Editorial Board member of the journals Hydrological Processes and Progress in Environmental Science. He has published about 50 papers of catchment hydrology.

Great resource for stable isotope research and education programs!

A decently attempted foray into an otherwise exciting, yet overexamined academic topic. Catchment Hydrology is a field on the verge of media saturation, it seems that every scholar has his new catchment hydrology theory he is willing to espouse to packed lecture halls and cable tv hosts throughout the nation. While some have actually made important breakthroughs ( Limerick, Berkowitz et al) others are just falling in line behind the vanguards lapping up the short lived fame and glory. Maybe these "hydrologists" should get into the new fad, and by the way guys, pilates is already taken.

Considering the fact that Loung Ung wrote this book from her perspective as a child during the Cambodian civil war, I was able to easily breeze through the book.Although this book may give the impression of a very limited insight the Cambodian genocide as it was written in a child’s perspective, this book definitely did not live up to that impression. It was able to make me question, think critically and feel several different emotions within just a couple hundred pages.I loved and still love this book so much that I recommended it to practically everyone I know. It supports my stance on war and is one of the most insightful books I’ve read up to date. Loved it and would most likely read it again.

I read the Kindle version of this book, which contained distracting typos. I do not know whether these exist in all versions of the book. There were a couple of times in the book after a person disappeared that Loung wrote what she imagined happened to them. It was hard for me to believe that a six-year-old would imagine the things she described, so those passages felt less genuine to me and felt more like she read about details of the Khmer Rouge’s practices as an adult and wove them into the story for dramatic effect.Typos and writing devices aside, this was obviously bound to be a terribly sad story. It is difficult to read about the atrocities of genocide, especially having seen in person the towers of human skulls left behind from the massive killings.

In 2000, Loung Ung published her childhood memoir which quickly became a national bestseller. Loung Ung’s memoir opens to the picture of a happy childhood in Phnom Penh. However the family’s happy existence abruptly changes with the invasion of the Khmer Rouge. The author describes the tragedy that befell her family and her fellow Cambodians during the nightmarish rule under Pol Pot’s reign of terror in the 1970’s. Ms. Ung relates their struggle to survive and the decisions they made which dictated their future. The author covers the invasion of the Vietnamese army who defeat the Khmer Rouge and of her reunification with her siblings. Loung Ung’s memoir, though she lived through horrific experiences, speaks to endurance, and to the love of family. Recommended.

It has been more than 40 years since the black-uniformed columns of the Khmer Rouge rolled into Phnom Penh and changed the life of a 5-year old girl named Loung Ung forever. With the benefit of distance, it may be all too easy to dismiss the horrors of that era to a distant corner of memory, or to brush it off as a bizarre aberration of history. That would be a mistake. Communism as an ideology may be bankrupt, but the specter of Utopian extremism lives on. Many young men and women who flock to ISIS today are fired by the same misguided zealotry, the same disdain for common human decency in the name of a supposedly better world, that brought young men and women into the folds of the Khmer Rouge 40, 50, and 60 years ago. In fact, the parallels are chilling - like many leading figures of ISIS, Al Qaeda, and the Taliban today, the leaders of the Khmer Rouge were by and large teachers. They wrote beautifully, if somewhat naively, of a return to innocent rural simplicity. They impressed their students with their erudition, simplicity of living, and apparent dedication. How can such earnest people do any wrong? Many will find out at the cost of their lives.Loung Ung's autobiography is a moving memorial to all the lives lost in that deranged quest for Utopia. In the eyes of the Angkar (the Khmer Rouge "organization"), liquidating the members of the old regime is but a necessary prelude to building a society of true believers. And if the Angkar believes that each hectare can yield 3 tons of rice (even though the best yield before the war was only 1 ton/hectare), then it must be achievable if everybody just works hard enough. The starry-eyed school-teachers of yesteryear who dreamed of an agrarian paradise had become totally out of touch. And with the absolute power they wielded, nobody was about to tell them otherwise. The result was mass famine as local cadres starved the people to turn in their production quota. As millions perished, the top leadership witch-hunted for "saboteurs" and berated their subjects for lack of revolutionary fervor.Ung's book is full of vivid descriptions and keen observations that bring the vicissitudes of that era poignantly to life. Many passages are naturally cinematic. These include:- Her idyllic family life in pre-KR Phnom Penh. The author was young, but her memory is sharp. Her colourful description of early 1970's Phnom Penh with its many exotic (to an American audience) sights, sounds, and colors is an adventure in itself;- The arrival of the KR in Phnom Penh. A moment of high historical drama, but perhaps the author was too young to remember the details. This is where Chanrithy Him's dramatic account offers some truly memorable moments;- Getting through the KR check points on the way out of Phnom Penh, as KR soldiers systematically rounded up all former members of the old regime. Most would be executed within days;- A widow who took refuge with the author's family, tenderly talking to the baby that she carried with her everywhere, refusing to accept that he was already dead; (p.86)- The ritual brainwashing of children at a child labor camp, with the clapping, the chanting of "Angkar!", the endless repetition of propaganda;- Loung's savage attack against one of her tormentors, a bully in the children's labour camp who despised her because of her light skin. Even as a 7-year old she dreamed of the day when she'd have the power to come back to look for the bullies and "beat them until she was tired". She vowed never to forget. Her sweet-natured sister couldn't understand why she wanted to retain such horrible memories. But as Loung explained, she needed the anger, the thoughts of retribution, to fill the bottomless sadness in her soul.I've always said that anger, or at least righteous indignation, is a much under-rated emotion. It needs to be controlled. It needs to be properly-channeled. But it's the juice that drives much social progress. Finally, a few observations about the author's family background. A few readers took offense at the author's perceived lack of sensitivity. Perhaps she took too much pride in her family's light skin, high status, and economic prosperity. Reading her account of her family's encounter with the villagers in the KR base areas, it's quite evident there was much class resentment and perhaps plain-old jealousy on the part of the country folk. Even to this day many villagers in the old KR base areas seem to recall that era wistfully - Pol Pot's cremation site seems to have become something of a shrine. No doubt the villagers didn't enjoy the regimentation, but it was a topsy-turvy time when poor people like themselves could feel superior to the city folk who probably looked down on them. Not that the Khmer Rouge cadres themselves were particularly holy, of course. Plenty were mere opportunists. The Khmer Rouge village chief who lorded over the "new people" ate better, dressed better, and was apparently not above trading extra food for gold at exorbitant prices. (Ironically his corruption probably saved some lives, because life definitely got a lot harder after Angkar tightened things up and sent more soldiers into the villages.) As for Pol Pot, the young Loung Ung knew almost nothing about him, except that he was "fat" in a country of living skeletons.A postscript: Those readers who are interested in how Loung and her siblings fared after the war may be interested in reading her second book, Lucky Child. While some readers may find the events in her later life less dramatic, I found it equally fascinating to read about her endeavors to come to terms with her past while trying to make a new life for herself in America. Like many children from similar backgrounds, she went through a phase when she attempted to cut all ties with her past (to the point of deliberately avoiding contact with her siblings) and plunged headlong into mainstream American youth culture. As she got older, she discovered that she could only conquer the ghosts of her past by embracing her roots, and to rise above her personal losses (and petty personal vengeance) by making them her life-long cause. While my own life experiences were nowhere nearly as dramatic as Luong's, there are enough similarities that what she wrote rang true to me and resonated. Well worth a read.

My parents never talked about their experiences of the war and killing fields. As I got older, I only got bits and pieces. Ung's memoir helped me fill in the gaps that are too difficult for my parents to speak of. I highly recommend this book. It's also an easy read. Ung vividly describes her experience. She also accurately describes the Khmer and Chinese culture, which sets the tone for the book. This information is essential for understanding what happened.

I happened to be touring the "Re-Education" School in Phnom Penh and the Killing Fields outside the city while reading this book. I can't say that I have ever felt I was living history by doing so. It was a profound experience. The book, so beautifully written in first person, tells a harrowing story of a small girl whose bravery surpasses anyone I have known or read about. Her writing deftly handles facing death, torture, starvation and endless cruelty aside times of overwhelming joy and compassion and the struggle to understand the dichotomy. Thank-you Ms. Ung, for sharing your story which will always be tattooed to my heart.

I gave up on this after reading about a fifth of it.First of all, the writing needs some work; it feels clunky, and the constant foreign words and translations distract from the flow of the story, rather than adding to it.Secondly, it feels like there's very little emotion in any of the characters. They don't react to events in relatable ways, so I just couldn't bring myself to care about them. Cheating wife? Oh well. Massive life changing revelation? Oh, the protagonist says, my father can now find me "someone more worthy of me" to marry. Ugh.However, what really made me give up was the two teenage girl protagonists. They talk and think about boys and marriage, and not much else. (To be fair, they also occasionally think about escaping their current life... and the new boys they'll meet.) When their mother reveals some life-changing news to them, their thoughts are about how this changes the kind of boys they can get.Ugh. No. There's more to life. I give up.

Buckle up for a fable that delightfully straddles the line between fantasy and history! A compelling tale about two sisters, Liba and Laya, living in a world of untamed wilderness, dangerous pogroms, and a surreal magic they do not yet understand. I particularly enjoyed Liba’s character and her style, especially when she learns to embrace who she truly is as the narrative progresses through the trials and mysteries that surround her. Although there are numerous magical elements in this story, a lot of real, and oft times dark history provides the backdrop to this plot about two sisters gradually coming of age. If you enjoy fantastic elements sprinkled in with realistic drama, then The Sisters of the Winter Wood is for you!

I devoured The Sisters of the Winter Wind in two days. I loved the way that Rena Rossner was able to weave together a compelling story and characters with so much history and mythology. Although chapters alternated between Liba and Laya, I felt Liba much more at the center of the story, maybe because I identified more with her practical nature. Although I had read a little bit about the book before I read it, Rossner frequently took the story in directions I didn't anticipate. Her descriptions, especially of the fruit, were fantastic and enticing. Although there was a lot of sadness in the story, there was hopefulness too. I recommend reading the author's note at the end of the book, because it shares a lot of history from that area, but wait until you have finished the story. This was one of my favorite books of the year so far, and I hope that it won't be too long before Rossner releases another novel.

I couldn't put it down! It reads more like a young adult novel, but a very good one. I recommend reading the author's note at the back of the book first to establish the history. Is it a perfect book? No. So why am I giving it five stars? Because it provides a great escape and a totally original story with original, flawed characters and a unique look at historical events I knew nothing about.I notice another reader's comment about confusion with all of the Hebrew words, but there's a glossary in the back that I used for review and I feel the Jewish traditions added depth and richness to the sisters' story. The book feels more like Liba's story, not so much shared equally between the two sisters. Perhaps that's because Liba is older and feels responsible for her younger sister. I loved the magical elements and also the way the writer used real historical places and events to increase the tension. The author is very good at creating mental pictures with words.

4.75 out of 5 stars.Liba and Laya are sisters who live with their Mami and Tati in the woods by a small town where Jews and non-Jews live in peace. One night, a stranger comes knocking at their cabin, setting motion events that will forever change the sisters, their family, and their town. Before their parents leave to see the Rebbe, who is on his deathbed, they reveal secrets to the sisters, but individually, and so as they fight themselves and each other, as well as those around them, you can see the secrets tearing them apart and at the same time bringing them closer together.Liba is already self-conscious when she finds out that she is a bear, so she feels that much more uncomfortable and large in her skin. Laya is light, airy, and bright, so much different than her sister, and a swan. With their parents gone, the girls quickly start forging their own paths, wildly divergent from what their parents would have wanted from them and dangerously apart from what their mother warned them about. Now, though, there are more strangers in the village - large men who frighten Liba and singing, luring fruit-sellers who Laya feels she belongs with. The sisters struggle to stay close and connected while each becoming her own person in the world.I adore this book. The beginning was a little bumpy because when the mother is explaining who they are to the sisters, it felt like the author was not confident in her own voice. However that quickly passed, and I was engulfed in the story. An intense family saga full of beautiful scenery, dangerous characters, history, mystery, and fabulism. The character building was flawless: you came to know Liba and Laya through alternating chapters/voices. There were secrets and challenges and loyalties and tragedies.Although for the most part the central focus is the sisters and their own personal trials and tribulations, the whisper of the world around them is evident. The transformation of their town from one where people of different cultures and religions live peacefully side-by-side to one where neighbors are suddenly talking out loud about each other in negative perspectives is heartbreaking.According to her Goodreads profile, the author's great-grandparents all immigrated to America to escape the war-time violence overseas, and this is her labor of love for them and the history and folklore surrounding her ancestors.

This picture of the late Ottoman era, leading into WWI and drawn by an ordinary but perceptive Palestinian soldier, is rare. He is totally aware of the privations and breakdown of civil society as well as the devastating battles and military losses. The Arab conscripts served in all areas, some dispatched to the Russian front where one described having spent time in a prisoner of war camp. The intellectual fervor of Syrians and Palestinians gave birth to Arabism and nationalism.Year of the Locust is a valuable contribution to our understanding.

Excellent!

Not what I expected.

First, it's not really a soldier's diary. It's the social-historical analysis of (very) short selections form one soldier by a scoiologist, mingled with the diaries and life events of two other (unrelated) Ottoman soldiers. It's confusing at times, and for a short book, it feels meandering and lacking incisive direction (this may reflect the translation and different criteria for social science writing). That being said, parts are quite interesting, and opens windows on the last decade of Ottoman society. We learn about CUP (Young Turks), the educational and military society of the Ottomans, inter-ethnic cooperation and tensions, and a couple of curious interludes (Turkish officers sent to Siberia make ther way back to the ME via Mongolia, China, and central Asia, an epic story for which there are, sadly, few details). Also we get a peek into the embryonic Arab nationalist salons that were forming at the time. Also, we are shown surprising elements that explain later stuff, like that there was really no "Palestinian" nationalism in the first 3 decades of the 20th Century, that Arabs of the Palestinian Mandate looking for self-determination were aiming for either a co-dominion with Egypt or being part of a "Greater Syria," which explains why there was no effort to form the Arab state envisioned in the 1947 partition - it had no advocates on the Arab side. All in all, useful for deeper understanding the period, but not a "good" read.

The Arab world has three major political metropolites: Baghdad, Damascus, Cairo. And three major religious civilizations: Meccah, Median and Holy Mosque in Jerusalem. Regionals such as Iran and Turkey should understand that once and for all. The Arab world is their centre, faith, strategic depth and their salvation...not just understand, also appreciate.

From Publishers Weekly

In 1879, Ponca chief Standing Bear challenged decades of Indian policy when he stood in a federal courthouse in Omaha, Neb., and demanded to be recognized as a person by the U.S. government. Journalist Starita masterfully portrays the chief's story in this compelling narrative of injustices finally righted. The Ponca, relocated from their beloved Niobrara River valley to the harsh plains of Oklahoma, found unlikely allies in a Nebraska newspaper man and a lifelong Indian fighter. Thomas Henry Tibbles, an ex-preacher and editor, filed a writ of habeas corpus on Standing Bear's behalf, demanding the government show good reason why the Ponca should be deprived of their property, homeland and their very lives without due process, an unprecedented act that forced the government to grapple head-on with whether Native Americans, like the recently emancipated black slaves, were persons entitled to equal protection under the law. Gen. George Crook, an accomplished Indian fighter, supported Standing Bear and Tibbles with a harsh indictment of the very policies he had spent his career implementing. Starita transforms what could have been a dry academic survey of U.S. Indian policy into an engaging yarn, full of drama and sudden revelations. (Jan.) Review

“The painful, moving, inspiring, and important story of Chief Standing Bear has found a worthy chronicler in Joe Starita. This excellent book is essential reading for anyone interested in the history of the West, or of America.”--Ian Frazier, author of On the Rez and Great Plains “’I Am A Man,’ Joe Starita's account of Ponca Chief Standing Bear's search for justice, is a compelling story that needed to be told, and one that all Americans should read. Standing Bear's perseverance resulted in a legal shift in white America that was a far-reaching benefit for all native peoples, and Joe Starita has told the story with sensitivity and rare insight.”-- Joseph M. Marshall III, author of The Journey of Crazy Horse, The Lakota Way, and The Day the World Ended at Little Bighorn “What makes a man a citizen of the country in which he was born? Joe Starita vividly tells the little known story of Standing Bear, whose 1879 case in Federal Court was to the status of American Indians what the Dred Scott case was to African Americans. In Starita’s book, the story of a great man from a very small tribe becomes a microcosm for the complex nineteenth century struggle that both the American Indians and the Federal government faced in trying to define the status of native people under the law. He paints an important and compelling picture of the plight of the Ponca, a tribe impaled by misguided paternalism, while hopelessly ensnarled in the bureaucratic red tape of an indecisive and out-of-touch government. It is a story that needs to be told and a book that needs to be read by anyone trying to understand the complex story of America’s relationship with its native people.”--- Bill Yenne, author of Sitting Bull and Indian Wars"Starita paints a powerful picture of Standing Bear, the Ponca chief who, by wanting only to bury his son’s bones in the lands of his ancestors, set in motion a series of events that resulted in all Native American peoples being given the full rights of American citizenship.  It is a portrait of a man, a portrait of a time, and an evenhanded discussion of the complex legal and moral issues that lay beneath the struggle of our nation’s first inhabitants to find justice in the land of their birth."--Kent Nerburn, author of Chief Joseph and the Flight of the Nez Perce and Neither Wolf nor Dog

#148,100 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

I am working towards my graduate degree in history and this was an assigned book for one of my courses. While most books I am forced to skim through and do not read cover to cover, this book I could not put down. I read every word on every page, and stayed up late into the night to finish it in the two days I had to read it. I can say with great confidence that Joe Starita's "I Am a Man" is the best book I have ever read across all genres. Not only is the story he tells heartbreaking and compelling, but Starita's writing style is eloquent and nuanced, giving this historical, scholarly book the readability of a novel. I highly recommend this book to anyone and everyone, whether you are a historian or not.

I'm glad to have devoted time to reading this book. I live just across the river from Niobrara, Nebraska, which is the Ponca homeland. If I were a school superintendent anywhere around here I would make it required reading for high school graduation. It is not just the story of a remarkable human being (Standing Bear), but also the story of an important part of our young nation's history. Standing Bear's story is a courageous saga. He was a person of the highest qualities a human being can have. Gentle, yet determined; simple, yet perspicacious; reflective, yet realistic. The world gets far too few Standing Bears. Thus is the world as it is. The United States, great country as it is among nations, should never be allowed to forget its shame in the unspeakable manner it abused its native peoples. It cannot be exceeded in this sin. We will never cease to pay for it. Joe Starita has written a fine book explaining all this. He's done his research both in Indian matters, and in government and legal matters. You won't have wasted your time to read his book. Those who read it fairly will be better Americans for their effort. John McNeill, Springfield, South Dakota

I read a lot about the Native American Indians and how the mistreatment of humanity in those times by both the Indians and the Whites appears nothing short of tragic and appalling. Mr. Starita's in-depth research into this period of time in history, and especially the life of Chief Standing Bear, is very impressive. The book is definitely worth reading if you care about that time in American history. I highly recommend it.

This is a great book covering a difficult subject. I never knew the history of this tribe. As most historians only cover the more popular tribes.

This book is fantastic! I have cried, laughed, and been angered by what I have read. Most of all, I have read about an amazing man, the wrongs committed against him and his people, and the loving common people who worked to turn around the wrongs and right them. It reads like an exciting novel, and I have learned a lot from it.

Great product!!

A great book to learn about the tragic hardships Indian Tribes had to endure from the forced removal from their homelands to the "Warm Country".Highly recommend to anyone who wants to learn about how America past was shaped into today's modern society... How Native Americans were stuck in a foreign society and forced to assimilate and conform to western rules.

It gives us history that we did not get in our schools in my day and it makes us (me anyway) glad to learn that there were Nebraskans who sympathized with the plight of Standing Bear's people. It also tells me about another person who had a lot to do with securing human rights and who needs more recognition. Perhaps Nebraskans, especially Omaha people, will do something in recognizing Standing Bear and the judge who made the decision to recognize the Native American as a citizen of the United States at 15th and Douglas Streets, downtown Omaha.

Both raw and cooked--Shaughnessy works through very difficult emotional material with great honesty and art. Our Andromeda has all the rhetorical energy and verbal inventiveness of Interior With Sudden Joy and Human Dark With Sugar, and much of the cheekiness of those first two books, but this third collection is deeper and necessarily more mature. Poetry has been a powerful tool for this poet in exploring a wide range of experience.

This is one of the most searingly honest books I've ever read. Shaughnessy delves into her pain, guilt, and anger after her first child is severely injured at birth. But the really amazing thing is that while she does not deny one iota of those emotions, she doesn't stay stuck in them. These poems, in turns furious and funny but always beautiful, express the other side of deeply felt pain and grief: the astounding breadth and depth of love.

Our Andromeda blew me away. While in conversation with the clear-eyed, steely brilliance of Sylvia Plath, it seems to go farther, often breaking with poetic conventions in working to do the impossible: find words and images to describe maternal grief. Shaughnessy creates an imaginative alternative world, Andromeda, where things could be different, then refuses to live there. These are brave, smart, startlingly intense poems that never stop trying to speak the unspeakable.

Fierce, heartbreaking, tender, musical, Our Andromeda is a triumph of love and imagination overcoming grief and fear. Inspired by the circumstance of her son who suffers brain injury at birth resulting in permanent disability, Brenda Shaughnessy works out in these poems her desire for an alternate world in which "there are no accidents" and it's possible to do things over. The poems oscillate between desire and acceptance, love and longing, fantasy and reality. It is a meditation on motherhood as well as self-discovery. Intensely emotional, the author looks at her grief, anger, and regret straight in the eye, and that ability to engage, articulate, and speak those internal experiences, however painful and frightening, is immensely courageous and strength giving. The book moves through several sections that build on each other. The first section of the book interrogates the notion of self: what is the self and what is other. The opening poem, "Artless" meditates on love: "Artless / is my heart. A stranger / berry there never was, / tartless. // Gone sour in the sun, / in the sunroom or moonroof, / roofless." In this poem, the heart, the poet's self, her life, are all objects which she can interrogate: "Heart, what are you? / War, star part?" She is intensely aware of the heart's failings, "fatted from the day, / overripe and even toxic at eve." But recognizing that it is a spectacular organ no less: "fighting fire with fire, / flightless. // That loud hub of us, /meat stub of us, beating us / senseless." There is mystery about this heart that exhausts itself for no purpose. Like love, it needs no motivation to keep going. "Liquid Flesh," a poem that dwells on the mother-child relationship, acknowledges the strong bond between mother and child, like one flesh that blends into the other, but also how uneasy this relationship is, with the mother wanting to hold on to her own identity, like "a chicken who still wants to be all potential."Recognizing the failings of the self and the reality it lives in, the second section, DOUBLE LIFE, entertains the idea of a parallel existence in which one might live the life one wishes for. "There is always an alternative world, an Andromeda," says the poet, "a secret world, the hidden draft, the tumor sibling, the 'there are no accidents." In "It Never Happened," the poet takes a drive to that parallel universe when she imagines taking home someone she likes rather than returning him to his wife. Or she does take him home to his wife but he kisses her before going in. It is difficult to figure out which part is imagined and which part is real, and what is imagined seems real. The fake distinction between the imagined and real is directly stated in "Kareoke Realness at the Love Hotel": "What's not paste or fake or false? / Or trick or replica / or denial or dream or drama / or simulation or reenactment / or knockoff or artificial, a ruse / a work of art, illusion, / a lie, mistake, fantasy, / a misconception, missed connection, / delusion, hallucination, / insincere, invalid, or invented, / a rehearsal with no performance?" What is real? Is not everything an illusion? And does not imagining something make it real? The act of writing is making something real, she affirms in "Miracles," "A scratch on the page / is a supernatural act, one twisting / fire out of water, blood out of stone. / We can read us. We are not alone."The third section, ARCANA, is a series of enigmatic poems derived from Tarot cards. Several of them explore the parallel lives of words, revealing the complexity and unfixedness of language. "The Hanged Man," question the ability of language to represent reality. "Judgment" contains the joke: "What did the stank of pines say to the herd of elephants wearing swimsuits and carrying large suitcases? ///'Nice trunks!'" Does "trunks" refer to tree trunks, swim trunks, elephant trunks, or suitcase trunks? Language is always one thing and then another simultaneously, the real and the imagined, the specified and alluded to. In "The Lovers," the poet says, "When you say I am beautiful/ suddenly I stop being so/ because you have claimed that." Is language so powerful that it can claim possession of something belonging to someone else? If so, then can it also claim grief and pain, taking power over one's emotions rather than letting them overpower oneself? In FAMILY TRIP, the realm of the imagined moves to the poet's relationships. In "I Wish I Had More Sisters", the poet's imaginary sisters serve as alter egos that could play out "all the ways I could have gone...without having to do the things myself." "My Water Children" also speaks of alternate selves but as children. Yet this desire to have a parallel or alternate life is not always a comfortable one. The ability to escape is hampered by the reality that escape is impossible, that no matter where one goes, one always takes with them that which one hopes to leaves behind. For example, in "Vacation," a respite to a tropical paradise is made uncomfortable with strange feelings and sights. The leaves are "little green lamps for the sunblind"; it is a struggle to find shade, one's ears are corked by water and earwax, the cerulean weather has "its yellow talons." In "Cover the Lamp with Its Own Light," the speaker keeps affirming her lack of expectations, yet that affirmation itself seems like an attempt to compensate. "I am not ungrateful," she says, "I will not wish for two things and then use the third to wish for three more....I am not greedy....I am not the wisher that I am," and so forth. The statements are opposite of the sentiments expressed so far, and her need to say them feels like a kind of struggle, an effort to make real what isn't real through speaking. The section concludes with "Vanity," in which the poet acknowledges that "in spite of the spot-checking, the self-seeking, the meticulous soul-smithing, I am still me, lacking."The final section of the book, OUR ANDROMEDA, reckons with the ultimate source of grief, the injury to a child at birth that results in permanent disability. In the long title poem, she tells the story of her son's birth, her guilt at not having brought him into the world safely, her anger at God, and reactions of her friends who were and weren't able to sympathize. She imagines an alternate world where her son is whole, able to have a normal childhood, the doctors are competent, and the mother has the chance to do it all again. She moves through all the stages of grief: denial, guilt, anger, negotiation. She makes the most painful confessions: "I can blame just about anyone for what happened to you, but ultimately it was my job to get you into this world safely. And I failed"; and the depth of her grief: "If I ate something sweet I would begin to cry, overwhelmed by how small comfort had become."But after allowing herself to express her grief and creating this alternative world in which mother and son thrives, she rejects that fantasy. She moves beyond wishful thinking to recognize that no matter how wonderful her imaginings, they cannot compare to her living, actual child, who survived, is hers, and is perfect in his own way. She says, "I was wrong to mourn so, he deserves better and so forth. You are better. Better than any lesser truth I could invent." Everyone, her friends, her family, and herself, were wrong. They did not need to be "so sorry" and "so sad" for Cal. After all, he was born, a fact in itself miraculous as Andromeda, and just as beautiful. The last poem speaks to the theme of the rest of the poem, that we are all hopelessly flawed and lacking, but love is perfect. Andromeda is inside us, she says, and here, in the Milky Way, with all its imperfections, is where we belong. Our Andromeda is a brave and necessary work. It takes one of the most difficult circumstances that the human heart can face and teaches us how to move through desire and devastation into love and joy. Its triumph over grief is earned. The gift we have been given is nothing less than a guidebook through the terrifying country of grief, but the poet shows the way with love, and brings us confidently, safely home.

As a poet myself, I look at books with a different eye, almost like the third eye every mother must have. The poetess in this eloquent collection mesmerized me with her quirky-funny take on things. Like the firststanza of HEAD-HANDED:Stop belonging to me so much, face-head.Leave me to my child and my flowers.I can't run with you hanging onto me like that. It's like having ten dogs on a single lead.I wanna meet this writer, hang with her, feed off of her good poet thoughts.Pick this collection up. You won't be disappointed.Mary Kennedy Eastham, Author, The Shadow of A Dog I Can't Forgetand Squinting Over Water - Stories

I enjoyed this work of poetry immensely. There is a clever clarity the Shaughnessy has in the working of a poem on page. I highly recommend this work, including the title poem.

I'm assuming the (currently) 6 other reviews (all 5 star) are the author's poet friends and/or family.
