It's easy to understand why the FLDS has been referred to as the American Taliban. Carolyn's book was excellent, although really painful to read, as she details of the extreme abuse and misery that women, children (& animals) suffer in this cult. It is very difficult to wrap your mind around the fact that this group continues to exist TODAY in the US. Unfortunate people born into the life are totally brain washed and cut off from reality. Otherwise, they would never accept their miserable lives! The FLDS went from bad to worse, when Jeffs became their "profit." He has to be one of the most evil people to ever walk the earth! Through his carefully chosen leadership, he continues to control every aspect of the member's lives (even from prison.) The male leadership of this cult are egomaniacal and devoid of decency. They seem only focused on gaining/keeping their power and impregnating as many women as possible (supported by the US tax payer) in an quest to become Gods in the afterlife. Until death, they rein like kings, having their pick of women and underage girls, well into their old age. Marriages are arranged and unless one is powerful enough, couples have no say in who they marry. What a sad world for the majority. No rights, no love, no grace and no hope! God bless Carolyn for having the guts to escape with her children. I wish her many years of happiness in life.

Excellent book - read through it quickly and could not put it down. Towards the very end it was a bit confusing and jumbled (my edition had a writer's "update" attached to it). Since then, I have read "Stolen Innocence" and started on "The Witness Wore Red" but still prefer "Escape" (I do have the sequel "Triumph" on order). Carolyn Jessop was able to flee the FDLS and successfully fight for custody of her 8 children - including 1 profoundly disabled one while navigating life outside the cult. Unlike the majority of FDLS women, she was able to go to college (which she had to fight for) while being in an arranged marriage with a man 32 years older than her in a place where women are expected to be subordinate to the men's desires and wishes and that of the FDLS church. These women are systematically denied medical treatment for pregnancy, labor, mental illness, genetic conditions, and basically anything else - but Jessop she was able to fight in her own way by defying and outsmarting the priesthood in order to get her disabled son the help he needed while she was in the FDLS. The girls and women are never taught that there is anything besides the FDLS that would give them rights, privileges or a voice, or that any abuse (physically or emotional) against them is wrong. Jessop took a risk when she escaped with 8 children in tow that there was a better life - with only $20 in her pocket, she didn't when or how she was going to get help, but she made it and it's a great story.

Riveting and infuriating at the same time. I couldn't put the book down, as it was well written in a logical sequence with attention-grabbing scenes throughout. At the same time, I was angry and sad during much of the read due to the descriptions of horrendous abuse that is inflicted upon the FLDS members, especially the least powerful ones. Not only is the abuse of the children enough to make me want to cry, but the psychological pain and humiliation inflicted on the less favored women is infuriating. It seems like the whole system is set up to demoralize them as much as possible, causing them to mistreat one another as they jockey for favored positions. This inhumane treatment of children and women, as well as some of the adolescent "lost" boys is highly encouraged by leadership. It is obvious from the title that the co-author gets out, eventually, so no spoiler alerts here. I am glad that she was able to escape from that hellish environment and get her kids out as well. When you read the book, you will find out how truly brave she was for even attempting to get them all out. My emotional roller coaster while reading the book is proof enough of excellent writing.

Unbelievable read. Jessop was able to place readers directly into her former life within the FLDS and allow us to feel every bit of abuse perpetrated upon her, her children, her stepchildren, and her sister wives. The level of misogyny within the cult was staggering and only became worse as Warren Jeffs took hold, and Jessop describes it in great detail. She stands apart from what we see as the typical FDLS wife in that she was allowed to get a college education and was able to hold down multiple jobs during her tenure with the cult. The fact that she had some contact with the outside world probably led to her eventual escape.I feel deeply for all of the women and children who did not manage to get out and realize that they actually had rights and didn't have to follow the prophet blindly. Jeffs and his minions invoke God to explain away rampant physical and sexual abuse, denial of education, denial of medical intervention, exile of young boys, and marital reassignments.

I already knew some things about the FLDS cult and Warren Jeff's actions, but I learned so much more from this book . I had trouble putting it down to get something else done. Carolyn writing style keeps you involved, entertained, and amazed at how she kept going in such a vile culture. I see why it is next to impossible for most women to escape alone, let alone with their children. And since she grew up in this culture she (like the other women and children) knew no other way existed and accepted her lot in life, only gradually realizing the outside world was not all poised to destroy her and her children as they are taught. I don't think I would have been so strong. And I am very sad that Warren Jeffs still seems to have so much control over his "people" even from prison and that many children were eventually forced to return to their "parents" after the compound was raided.

Disruption: Repurposing the Church to Redeem the Community is the latest book by Mark DeYmaz, Directional Leader at Mosaic Church in Little Rock Arkansas. Mark begins the book explaining the concept of "disruption" in the business world, and relates how the same concepts apply to the church. Much of the rest of the book focuses on applications of this principle in the church world, using the story of Mosaic as the backdrop. This is real world stuff, not academic theory. One of the most useful sections describes the establishment and purpose of Vine and Village, the churches umbrella 501 (c)(3). Churches and church networks stand to learn a lot from their ideas of adding a financial element to the spiritual and social elements most churches use to make an impact. The underlying theme of this work has to do with the intentionality with which this church has built a diverse, multi-ethnic congregation that truly reflects the makeup of their community. Read along with Mark's other books which focus on building a multi-ethnic church, Disruption is a must read for church leaders wanting their church to be relevant in the world we now live in.

I was mesmerized, conviction, affirmed, and challenged as I read this book. The Holy Spirit was constantly speaking to my heart. Before I even finished the book I bought a copy and sent it to my former associate pastor to whom I turned my last pastorate over to. This book is a Must-Read!

If we did half of what’s in the book we would change the world! I highly recommend the book to all. Especially those who are tired of watching our world fall apart and wanting to do something.

A great fresh take on what the Church can do and who the Church should be moving forward.

Probably one of the best reads out there currently for those interested in reaching the community for Christ in new ways.

A church hoeing its influence for the kingdom and not for itself is Gospel centered and Jesus honoring ministry and church.

Very practical book. Altho' our church is not inter- city like Pastor DeYmaz, so many of the ideas transferred to our needs.

Thought provoking and encouraging. Glad I purchased it.

Kim Philby exuded charisma among those he came in contact with. So much so that he pulled the wool over the eyes of the man who thought knew him best, Nicholas Elliott. Philby was one among five individuals from England who made up what came to be known as the Cambridge Five, those from England who spied for the Soviet Union. Apparently Philby felt no remorse for sending a significant number of Soviets who spied for England to their deaths when they were requested to return to the Soviet Union. Philby possessed three significant weaknesses not conducive to spying namely gambling, womanizing, and alcohol. Yet he could charm a puff adder out of a tree with his ability to relate to other people.I have possessed only a very familiar acquaintance regarding Kim Philby and the Cambridge Five and there were parts of the book that required me to read slowly. If you fall into this category I still believe you will find the book a rewarding read. I enjoy books on spies and this biography by author Ben Macintyre is an important addition to my collection.

This excellent book by the London journalist, Ben Macintyre, is suspenseful and indeed reads almost like a novel. One has to keep reminding oneself that Kim Philby’s spying for the Soviet Union resulted in hundreds of deaths. Surprisingly, despite the opening of Soviet–era archives in recent years, the book contains no startling new revelations. It does, however, contain much new interesting information about such incidents as “Operation Valuable” (an attempted infiltration of Communist Albania) and Commander Crabb’s attempt to photograph the underside of a warship that brought Comrades Krushschev and Bulganin on a “goodwill” visit to the United Kingdom. Both projects ended in failure due to Kim Philby‘s passing on of information about them to his Soviet handlers.I don’t think I have ever read such a damning indictment of the English upper class as emerges from this book. Even Gilbert and Sullivan could not have invented more eccentric characters. Their names alone are risible. We have, for example, Hester Harriet Marsden-Smedley, a journalist who first casually suggested to Philby that he might want to become involved with the Secret Services. Then there is Sarah Algeria Marjorie Maxse, a Conservative Party panjandrum and a member of MI6, who recruited Philby on the basis of a report from Valentine Vivian (also known as Vee-Vee), the deputy head of MI6, who knew Philby’s father. Vee-Vee gave the quintessential definition of England’s old boys’ network: “I was asked about him, and said I knew his people.”We also encounter the grossly eccentric Hillary St. John Bridger Philby, Kim Philby’s father, who converted to Islam and became an advisor to King Ibn Saud of Saudi Arabia. One can add Helenus Patrick Joseph Milmo a barrister who interrogated Philby and who looks from his photograph like a character out of Gilbert and Sullivan’s “Trial by Jury.” Then there is Sir Hughe Montgomery Knatchbull-Hugesson, His Majesty’s Ambassador to Ankara, who developed the habit of bringing home official papers to the ambassadorial residence where his valet, an Albanian petty criminal by the name of Bazna, was able to copy the documents and pass them on to the Nazis. This book differs from other books about Philby in that it tells the tale through Philby’s relationship with Nicholas Elliott, a Cambridge-educated British spy, who was Philby’s closest friend and strongest defender even after Philby came under suspicion following the flight to Moscow of Donald Maclean and Guy Burgess after Maclean's exposure as a Soviet agent. Mr. Macintyre tries to make a kind of heroic figure out of Elliott. Elliott became Philby’s friend and began to worship him “with a powerful male adoration that was unrequited, unsexual and unstated.” However, it is clear that Elliott was a total dupe and just another eccentric member of the British old boys’ club who overindulged in alcohol and whose main pleasure was the telling of risqué jokes. I do not share Mr. Macintyre’s admiration of Elliott. He did not hesitate during bibulous lunches to relate confidential information to Philby who promptly passed it on to his Soviet handlers.Mr. Macintyre drops only hints here and there as to why he thinks Philby did what he did. He indicates that Philby was not really an idealist who was committed to the Communist cause. For Philby spying was a kind of game and became in the long run a form of addiction. Mr. Macintyre suggests, correctly I think, that Philby’s famous escape to the Soviet Union from Beirut was no accident. He could easily have been prevented from escaping. However, the old boys were not all that anxious for one of their own to be tried publicly at the Old Bailey where their ineptitude would be displayed before the British public. They preferred the matter to remain concealed by the provisions of the Official Secrets Act. They therefore almost pushed Philby into making his escape. It is somewhat galling that Philby went unpunished for his treachery. However, in some respects, his exile to the Soviet Union may have been the best punishment of all. Here was this bon vivant who loved champagne, haute cuisine and every other kind of luxury forced to live in the dull, gray and cheerless atmosphere of Moscow. Sadly for him, there were no posh watering spots such as he was accustomed to frequenting in London. Additionally, Philby was an unwelcome guest and was assigned a minder who was there nominally to protect him, but whose actual job was to monitor his every movement. Guy Burgess suffered a similar fate as amusingly depicted in the short BBC Television film “An Englishman Abroad” by Allan Bennett and starring Coral Browne and Alan Bates.Ben Macintyre relates a story in which there were no good players. Only J. Edgar Hoover, who has a cameo role in the book, emerges as a person with any common sense and that says it all!

Ben Macintyre has consulted virtually every available source on Kim Philby and selected the best bits for this delightful read. No matter if "A Spy Among Friends" contains few startling insights – there is always room on the bookshelf for well-written, scrupulously annotated research.Macintyre does highlight one thing perhaps not widely appreciated, though it was previously pointed out by Graham Greene: Philby was among other things an effective manager, a leader who inspired loyalty in his team because he repeatedly demonstrated loyalty to them. While it's true that he came from the right social background, that alone does not explain why for decades he was protected by the solidarity of "a chosen brotherhood." (pg. 185) What's more telling is that he seems to have been genuinely liked by everyone at MI6, even though they separately loathed each other.Philby may at times have suffered from having chosen to lead a double life, but I suspect he also took some pleasure in disguising himself without resorting to make-up or masks, simply relying on having the right background, a winning personality and conversational skills. A risk-taker without remotely being a Bond-like adventurer, he enjoyed deciding who would get to know how much of the truth, and which version of it. He must also have relished the opportunity to play God, determining who lived or died without his victims ever suspecting that he was the ultimate arbiter. "Victims?" one imagines Philby saying with Harry Lime – "don't be melodramatic."Macintyre's new angle comes from his refocusing our attention on Philby's relationship with his closest friend – and fellow intelligence officer – Nicholas Elliott. Elliott was perhaps the most likeable member of the well-connected set who enabled Philby to remain undetected, if not entirely unsuspected. Whatever it was that finally convinced Elliott of Philby's treachery (the theory offered here is not entirely believable), it came as a severe shock to his system. Macintyre describes well how shaken he must have felt at suddenly confronting a truth he had so long and so confidently denied. The title of this book is "A Spy Among Friends," but a more accurate one might have been, "Intelligence Agents Have No Friends."For a more detailed version of this review, see my blog: hamiltonbeck.wordpress.com
