The only way this book could have been better is if it was longer. I really enjoyed the author's take on the show and I would have loved a more comprehensive analysis - not that the book feels incomplete, I just really wanted more of a good thing.

The reasons for this attitude are his ever-present compulsion to learn and discover, his urge to follow his insatiable curiosity (about everything!) wherever it might lead, his willingness to simply state whatever he thinks when asked, and his refusal to always take life so seriously. It is evident that Dr. Feynman has achieved what many can only dream of--living a meaningful and accomplished life while still being able to find absolute joy and fun in so much of how we spend that life.It’s hard to imagine anyone that would not find this an interesting and enjoyable read. Although Dr. Feynman is a physicist, this is not a science book, and the reader really needs nothing in the way of a scientific background to fully enjoy it.The book is divided into five parts corresponding to different parts of the author’s life. Within each part, the stories themselves are rarely more than half a dozen pages long, and none depend on the others. Although I read it cover-to-cover in order, it would be easy to open to any of the stories and read it independently. It is one of those books one could pick up when there are only a few minutes to read. But your experience may be like mine, and you may not want to put it down again!Highly recommended for just about anyone!

We are not often blessed with persons of the amazing intelligence of Richard Feynman. Even someone with just a smattering of science and math can appreciate this Nobel Prize winning, bongo drum playing, safe cracking denizen of the Manhattan Project at Los Alamos. Here was a man of superior intellect who could yet relate to the world around him and who had a curious interest in many facets of human endeavor. That is coupled with obvious tenderness toward his first wife, who dies of TB during the Manhattan Project. Even as Feynman writes about that in tightlipped fashion, his deep love for her and sorrow for the loss comes through.The book is not tightly organized but it is smartly written. Guys like Einstein, Feynman, Carl Sagan will all wrestle from time to time with the non-scientific question of what preceded the Big Bang, if only by asking fleetingly if there is some principle of causation behind it all. Obviously I don't know if God exists or what it all means. But it is hard for me to think that such a towering intellect encased in such a lovely witty and wise person results from mere accident. I'll go no further.

Feynman is a genius. The entire book is full of charming, intelligent, and surprisingly inspiring stories about the "curious character" that was the late, great Richard Feynman.The last chapter is something else entirely: an entire philosophy and ethos of scientific thought rolled into a few pages. I found Feynman's principles and ideals for scientific integrity almost unbelievably precious: to never compromise on experimentation, to never make claims you can't back up with hard evidence, and most importantly, to never fool yourself into thinking that you're more right than you actually are.Although only the scientifically or mathematically trained will understand much about Feynman's actual work, his life philosophy and its implications are something that everyone can benefit from. The world would be a better place if each of us tried to replicate just a little of his intellectual integrity. I almost didn't believe such beautiful, pure intellectual idealism wasn't possible until I read this book.

Richard Feynman is the exact brand of aloof, irreverent, genius that the world needs, at any and every time. This casual telling of myriad anecdotes from Feynman's life is precious and airy, even when dealing with early nuclear secrets, death, and other heavy topics. Feynman was famous for taking a fresh, original approach in physics; he was always re-inventing the ideas for himself by thinking them through profoundly, starting from fundamentals. He made great contributions and won the Nobel Prize in Physics. This book is not so much about physics, instead some humorous stories and adventures, which show his fresh, original approach to life. I admire his enthusiasm, his love for adventure, his sparkling personality, his honesty and the clarity of his thought, and his disdain for pretense. The anecdotes give much insight into why Feynman was such a great physicist. If you want learn about physics, with his original approach on full display, his best two books are the famous "Feynman Lectures on Physics" (undergraduate courses at Caltech) and "QED, the Strange Theory of Light and Matter".

A strangely inspiring and provocative book. It's hard to put into words the power of this book. Feynman's personality comes through so strongly that you rage against stupid bureaucrats, you see what it means to be an original thinker uninhibited by orthodoxy, you see one of the best explanations of the difference between genuine science and "cargo cult science" as Feynman calls it. You see one of the best explanations for why the California education system has such troubles, when you read his account of reviewing textbooks for the state. Somehow this book inspires you to be smarter, to be more original, and to be more intellectually honest.

We get to meet new characters and get to know more of the old ones too.Jessie and Tobias Walker (mother and son) are Intuits. Jessie gets a "feel" for people while Tobias gets a "feel" for animals. They are both from Prairie Gold but are helping Tolya Sanguinatti, the Vampire who's in charge of Bennett. All humans from Bennett were killed by the Elders after the Human First and Last Movement attacked the Others and Tolya is in charge of repopulating it with the right kind of humans.Jana Paniccia is hired to work with Bennett's sheriff, Virgil Wolfgard. Virgil has all the right reasons to hate the humans but he understands why they might need Jana. His idea of dealing with women is to put them in jail under a "me time" space.Barb Debeny is in charge of the pets and the relocation of them to new homes. She has a happy personality and is very friendly, traits which can be confusing to the terra indigene especially to Virgil.Wild Country was fabulous! I couldn't be happier that we are able to learn more about these characters. I love to read what was going through Tolya's head. Virgil and Jana's interaction with the puppy had me laughing at loud. Paul Broks' `Into the Silent Land' is a collection of essays, some with connecting themes and stories and other that seem like stand-alone essays. All deal with the deeper questions of what it means to be human in an age of advanced neuroscience research. In a time when the idea of a ghost in a machine and a soul are discarded notions, what does it mean to be an `I'. How does our mind work, when there is no central controller? These are all fascinating and unsettling questions which the author tackles with great clinical and philosophical insight. I found his premises to be reasonable, honest and not cherry-coated. His discussion of what really controls our actions, thoughts and behaviors comes closer to understanding the human condition than any other book I have read. If you looked at the human brain closely you would only find a series of similar neuronal cells passing electrical currents between cells. But when you zoom out, somehow all these simple processes create a brilliant consciousness. The author rightly points out that much complicated machinery would look simple if viewed up close and it is the complex arrangement which makes the process so advanced. The other eerie finding is that the human brain decides to act before we are conscious of the decision to act. The human mind is a self-perpetuating machine and our conscious experience of it, is simply a story that we tell ourselves to create coherence. The author delves in to these facts and comes up with stunning insights. This is a great, dark neuroscience masterpiece and I highly recommend it.

love this book, a review of Dr. Broks' surgery practice and research. His style is clear, thoughtful and insightful. and his compassion for his patients is heartfelt. I am taking my time because the subject is complex and I am not a scientist, but his writing is compelling and important.

This book is wonderful. I bought a used copy to give to a friend after she had to deal with another friend having a psychotic break. If you want to have a better understanding of yourself and other people, Broks's book beautifully illustrates the confusing nature of the mind and the self—what we know and all that we don't.

Have not been so interested in the brain, but the "mind" has been endlessly fascinating. I'm coming from a Buddhist meditation viewpoint according to which the mind is all, is everything. And so lately I've been investigating the mind from a western angle which, of course, is brain centered. What happens to the mind when the brain is damaged. Stuff like that. Fascinating!

not since Loren Eiseley,Carl Sagan and Lowell Thomas have I read such fine science writeing.

I expected this book to be a bit more scientifically oriented. I was disappointed to find that the author spends more time waxing poetic about souls, etc., than the nature of neuropsychology and related disorders. He sheds light on the hardships of dealing with patients as whole people, while being all too aware of their component parts. While I realize this is an issue for any kind of practitioner, I would have liked a bit more solid information on the nature of brain pathology.The author surely has a way with words, but often rambles for pages at a time. There is very little information on any given patient or case. The focus is usually on the author's experience doing his job.Overall, not an awful book. But as other reviewers have said, it could have used a bit more substance to balance the conjectures. Perhaps better for a casual reader than someone strongly interested in the field.

I very much enjoyed this book. It has a very quirky approach to explaining neuroscience and consciousness. Very entertaining and informative. The description of the brain as a piece of grey tissue is quite disturbing and thought provoking.

I'm enjoying this book, but hadn't expected something as philosophical re: why are we here sort of ideas. Would recommend for someone interested in neuropsychology with that caveat.
