Review

“Fascinating.”—Vanity Fair“[An] amusing, readable synthesis . . . Blank darts from one intriguing, thought-provoking point to another. . . . [And she] offers the provocative solution that soon we will move on from our present fixation on the binary to a more fluid understanding.”—Abigail Zuger, New York Times“Using wit and wisdom, Blank substantiates her argument that love and passion are not defined by biology.”—EDGE Publications“A lively, accessible synthesis of decades of scholarship on the history and sociology of sexuality.”—CHOICE “Wry, witty and thoroughly researched.”— Lavender Magazine“Blank has produced a challenging, clear, and interesting study of how Western views of what it means to be ‘straight’ have changed over the past two centuries and continue to change.”—Library Journal“Blank’s work reaches further and deeper into the history of heterosexuality…highly accessible.”—Lambda Lit“Straight …is accessible and engaging, often witty and penetrating in its insights.”—New York Journal of Books “Blank’s tenacious research and insightful arguments make clear how malleable the attitudes of the world we live in really are.”—Michelle Kehm, Bust“Blank writes with great erudition and humor, so that, even a skeptical (or anxious) reader will be hard-pressed not to find it enjoyable and thought provoking."—Haaretz“Hanne Blank has rendered a meticulously researched romp through the history of ‘heterosexuality’—that pesky orthodoxy still looming over Western culture like smog. Her sweeping synthesis takes on everything from Freud to Larry Craig, expertly weaving this untold history with insight and a refreshing dose of irreverence.”—Lisa M. Diamond, author of Sexual Fluidity: Understanding Women’s Love and Desire“The author uses wisdom and wit to substantiate her contention that love and passion are not definable by biology.”—Kirkus“From its thorough but brisk explorations of sexual orientation’s intersections with sex, gender, and romance, this illuminating study examines our presuppositions and makes a powerful, provocative argument that heterosexuality—mazy, unscientific, and new—may be merely “a particular configuration of sex and power in a particular historical moment.”—Publishers Weekly“With impeccable research and detail, Hanne Blank uncovers the fascinating, often hidden, history of heterosexuality. Straight is a marvelous cultural history that is as entertaining as it is profoundly enlightening and necessary for understanding the world in which we live.”—Michael Bronski, author of A Queer History of the United States “What would it mean to dispense with our current categories of sexual identity? Writing with grace and wit, Hanne Blank demonstrates that what sounds like a radical proposition is also historically inevitable. This is a book that really shakes up an assumption or two!”—Laura Kipnis, author of How To Become a Scandal and Against Love   “Challenging our culture’s deeply entrenched, stubborn assumption of heterosexuality, Straight helps us to think newly and critically. Starting from her own experience, Hanne Blank creatively analyses the unexamined idea that heterosexuality is given, unchanging, ahistorical.”—Jonathan Ned Katz, author of The Invention of Heterosexuality and co-director OutHistory.orgFrom the Hardcover edition.

I'm putting this book on my very short list of works, including "The Selfish Gene" The Selfish Gene: 30th Anniversary Edition--with a new Introduction by the Author, Davies' "Deptford" Trilogy The Deptford Trilogy, and "The Nurture Assumption" The Nurture Assumption: Why Children Turn Out the Way They Do, Revised and Updated, that have fundamentally changed the way I view the world. It really doesn't matter whether one agrees completely with Blank or not as to the historical reason the term and concept came into our culture; those are interesting opinions. The incontrovertible fact is that "heterosexual" has a specific meaning, a meaning that changes over time, and a meaning that impacts ones understanding of all other aspects of gender and sex identity. The life-changing aspect of this book is, in other words, not so much Blanks specific explanation of what heterosexuality is and means but rather the underlying concept that its meaning is not self-obvious and is important to understand. From this point of view Blank's ideas become data in a personal analysis of an entire area of thought that had never occurred to me before.Another reviewer likens "Heterosexual" to post-modern "everything is a social construct" fallacy. I think seeing it that way completely misses the point. Of course who I am sexually is a physical reality, founded in my genes, my gestation, and my life experience. Who I actually am is not a construct but a reality. But the name given to that reality IS a social construct. Who falls under this umbrella, and who does not? I often call myself bisexual, for want of a better term, but never felt it is particularly accurate. Reading this book has led me to coin a new term, "NH", or "Not Heterosexual", which has some of it's own baggage but is perhaps a little more accurate. How many books will ever cause someone to redefine his own sexual orientation? Here's the reason I recommend this book to everyone: if you and your brother are monozygotic twins, and share the same sexual orientation, the reality of your own sexuality is still different from his. Your husband's sexuality is substantially different from that of your college boyfriend, even if they both self identify as "straight". Considering these facts will, I think, give anyone reading it a deeper understanding of themselves. For anyone who, like myself, is not (to use the APA term) "gender-normative" [...], or who is close to someone like me, I consider it essential reading.

Good thought and excellent prose construction. A+A good read for everybody, goes beyond academic boundaries.

This is a wonderful history that diligently researches a word that many use but few really understand. A compelling story of how and why we, as Western society (there is little to no mention of other cultures), refer to and think in certain ways about the heterosexual/homosexual dichotomy. I found this to be delightfully informative and well researched. There is a bit of, perhaps willful, disregard to whether certain historical shifts are causation a or merely corollaries of some greater force, however, this does not distract from the essential premise of this work. I would heartily recommend this to anyone looking to learn more about the history of Western sexuality, marriage, and family.

this is a popular history but very well balanced. I recommend to any one who is interested in the dichotomous sex relationships in our current culture.

Blank's exploration of this cultural norm is as thorough as I was hoping for. It opened my mind and helped me have a more nuanced understanding of sexuality and human relationships. I can't give higher praise than that as the quality of my relationships is where I find the value and balance of my life.

Excellent analysis. Thorough, informative, and provocative. The author gets a few points wrong but is otherwise very persuasive.

AWESOME AWESOME BOOK.

Simply fabulous and poignant work... a must read! Hanne Blank is a vivid, authentic and powerful writer.

100% Satisfied.

I found this book to be very informative.Everyone should read this book especially if you are a union member. The extent to which union bosses are using members's dues to corrupt the political system are very disturbing.Contrary to what one reviewer posted, Linda Chavez cites a variety of sources including union publications.

Linda Chavez came up professionally through labor union channels and knows unions from a unique insider's point of view. Added to this are years of experience working with unions and watching the results of their actions. Chavez captures the unfortunate manner in which organizations that were originally designed to protect and advance workers have been irreparably corrupted. Now unions have become little more than political/economic machines themselves that abuse and steal from the very people who support them. This is an extremely well-written and documented book, presented in the smooth, readable style that characterizes Linda Chavez's works. It is a must read for all who are concerned with the underhanded political abuse that is corrupting the selection process for our elected officials. Buy it today, you will enjoy it.

This is a thinly disguised piece of National Right-to-Work Committee propaganda! It is even apparent where the writing styles of the two authors do not meld. Had Linda Chaves become Secretary of Labor, it is clear which side she would have taken.Although there are extensive footnotes, most are secondary sources such as newspaper articles which tend to sensationalize news.Over and over in the book, there is mention that unions do not report their finances. They do, including their payrolls. How many businesses would make their payrolls public information? At best, public corporations list the five highest paid executives in their proxy statements. Large unions have independent auditors and publish financial statements annually in their journals. It may be true that some politicians are beholden to unions for their political contributions, but the same goes for corporations and their PAC's. Other misconceptions in the book are the job creation statistics in RTW states. No mention is made of what types of jobs these are.The entire book is heavily biased. All one needs to do is try to recall when someone else went to bat for them to get a raise or fight a wrongful discharge. Unions have their place in our society.

Henry David Thoreau gave a clear-eyed description of politics and life (as well as inspired the name of one of my favorite web sites) when he wrote, "There are a thousand hacking at the branches of evil to one who is striking at the root." Today, for all the seeming thousands of books hacking at Haliburton, Big Oil, swift boats, who-lied-about-what, and all the other leafy branches of American politics, at least one book has finally struck at the root: The massive and growing Big Labor political empire. In another memorable quote, Thomas Jefferson once said something along the lines that "To force a man to pay for the propagation of opinions which he disbelieves is sinful and tyrannical." "Betrayal," by Linda Chavez and Daniel Gray, is the story of how this sin and tyranny has come to be visited on us through the government-granted power of forced unionism, and how all of American politics has been twisted as a result. Indeed, from the presidency to local school boards, it's hard to find any political arena where the forced-dues-fueled Big Labor political machine isn't a -- or *the* -- most significant power. In fact, Big Labor's political power dwarfs that of corporations, the various "special interests," and even the political parties themselves. The authors give us chapter and verse, figures, footnotes, and lots of disturbing stories. The special legal privileges enjoyed by Big Labor, up to and including immunity from prosecution for committing acts of violence, should be especially disturbing to anyone who believes in a level playing field. It's a shame that this book probably won't get the attention it deserves. Anyone who doubts that the political game is by and large a fixed one needs to open these pages and discover that far more than Big Oil, Skull and Bones, or various other alleged Illuminati "running the country," the hands really pulling the strings belong to the labor union bosses.

I have always admired Ms Vargas .She is great on camera, and beautiful in a "girl next door" way .I gave the book 3 stars after a lot of thought. I would describe it as tantalizingly short on details. She glosses over most of it, just giving us a few snippets here and there, almost requiring us to read between the lines. As several reviewers noted, a glass or two of wine now and then, and suddenly she is almost dead from alcohol poisoning? In truth it had to be a long progression. For example, she notes that, before she was even married, on the morning of September 11, 2001, she woke up badly hungover. Having spent the previous evening socializing and drinking with her fiancé and parents in a way that seemed normal to her at the time. In those early days she could shrug it off, drink Gatorade and go to the gym. The first few years after she was married, when her husband asked her to drink less, she did. Then they grew apart through various circumstances and things went downhill pretty quickly. She started going to bars alone, pretending to talk to someone on the phone who was "on their way", ie she wasn't really "drinking alone". She evidently started doing more and more desperate things, but there isn't much detail here. Again, without a lot of detail, it sounds like family members forced her into treatment several times until it finally stuck..We come to understand that anyone can become alcoholic. Elizabeth writes that she actually told her employers she was struggling with addictions to alcohol and Ambien, as though the prescription drug made the whole thing more lady-like. Alcoholism can happen to people who fail in life and drown their sorrows, and it can happen to folks who have gotten everything they have ever wanted, and still have trouble dealing with it all.The message of the book is that addiction is unpredictable, and not related to one's intelligence or love of family. Certainly, having an anxiety disorder can make one more vulnerable. With regards to her husband, I maintain he is a stand -up guy. Several reviewers have bashed him and I disagree. It isn't easy, both being in the public eye, but one person is much more successful. Also, when you are married, it isn't "my money" and "your money", it's "our money", something that many people are apparently surprised to realize all of a sudden when divorce is contemplated. His career was mostly on the wane when they got together, and she knew he had to pay his ex-wife child support, so the financial constraint was there from the beginning. No doubt, he put up with quite a bit over the years, very little of which she actually wrote about, and the addiction naturally had a devastating effect on their relationship. By the time he actually left , she had already tried rehab several times and there was no guarantee it would ever take. I just hope they are civil for the sake of the kidsI applaud her writing this book, although the fact of her addiction was leaked against her will a couple of years ago, so it hasn't been a secret. Perhaps there can be a follow up book in 5 years with more details on her career and her on-going recovery.

Elizabeth Vargas has been a favorite journalist of mine for years. I've always thought she was so elegant, classy, and well spoken with just a hint of vulnerability. I've followed a lot of the stories she's reported on and always look forward to seeing her when I tune into 20/20.I was quite shocked to learn in 2014 that she was struggling with alcohol addiction and was in rehab. I was tuning into a 20/20 episode when her colleague announced it on air as he gave her words of encouragement and support from him and others from ABC. I was really taken aback. Elizabeth always seemed so poised and "together". I just really could not reconcile this addiction with the elegant women I tune into every Friday night.I have eagerly awaited this book since her interview with Diane Sawyer on Friday, Sept. 9th. I pre-ordered it on amazon. Only had to wait three days and started reading it at about 9:15 pm on Monday night.I found her story to be fascinating. She is open and honest about her lifetime struggle with anxiety. She used alcohol to ease that anxiety in her later years. It worked at first, but later, just made the problem worse, as it always does. She is honest and very candid. I was rooting for her the whole time I was reading and still am! What a lovely woman. I wish her all the best!Highly recommend this book!

Inspiring story. Elizabeth has told my story too, and that of so many alcoholic mothers. The shame, guilt, remorse are what leads to our next drink. I suffer from anxiety and depression and have for most of my life. I want to embrace Elizabeth and tell her "to keep coming back..." Thank you for a wonderful share.

As a person struggling with extreme anxiety I felt Elizabeth gave an honest and heartbreaking description of how anxiety can effect life. Her story of addiction was heartfelt. I truly wish her the best.

I really enjoyed Between Breaths. I thought Elizabeth Vargas did an excellent job explaining the root cause of her alcohol problem and taking the reader back to her childhood days where these problems first manifested themselves. I was very impressed that Ms. Vargas did not take this opportunity to write a 'tell all' that revealed other peoples problems. She does not name names, even though she knows we can all go Google this information. I pray that each day Ms. Vargas finds the strength and courage she needs to battle her disease. I pray that in the years to come her sons will be blessed with love and wisdom and that they share their forgiveness with their Mom and I hope that she will be able to accept it when it is given. The book is an excellent read. It is enlightening and entertaining. It's honest and real.

This was a book I had difficulty putting down. I winced when she was about to do the wrong thing again and again, flinched every time she passed up getting the help she needed, and groaned all the times she was given good advice she didn't take. This had to have been a very personal and difficult story to tell, and I'm honored she told it to us. Thank you.

I've always admired Elizabeth's work on ABC and would have never guessed she had anxiety hiding in the background. She was always poised, professional and a delight to follow. I absolutely loved this book and the raw honestly she offered in sharing her story. It truly is a disease and those not affected would never understand the power of the drink. Thank you Elizabeth for sharing your personal story and how hard it was to overcome this disease. You will certainly help many others gain the courage to get the help they need and deserve to be well again.

I really enjoyed this book. She was so honest in this book and put her heart out there to show the public how hard addiction is to stop. And how she ended losing so much before she could stop. I suffer from anxiety and understand some of what she feels.

Once WHAT DO YOU KNOW ABOUT YOURSELF? WHAT ARE YOUR stories? The ones you tell yourself, and the ones told by others. All of us begin somewhere. Though I suppose the truth is that we begin more than once; we begin many times. Over and over, we start our own tales, compose our own stories, whether our lives are short or long. Until at last all our beginnings come down to just one end, and the tale of who we are is done. This is the first story I ever heard about myself: that I came into this world before my time. And that my coming was so sudden, hot, and swift, it carried everything before it away, including my mother’s life. Full of confusion was the day of my birth, of portents, and of omens. Just at daybreak, a flock of white birds flew across the face of the sun. Its rising light stained their wings bloodred. This was an omen of life taking flight. At full noon, every single tree in every single orchard on my father’s estate burst into bloom at once, in spite of the fact that it was October. This was an omen of life’s arrival. At dusk, a great storm arose, catching everyone by surprise. My mother was in her garden, the one she planted and tended with her own two hands, when two claps of thunder, one from the east and the other from the west, met above her head in a great collision of sound. The earth shook beneath her feet. Crying out, my mother tumbled to the ground. What this portended nobody ever did decide, because it was at precisely this moment that I declared my intention to be born. Fortunately for my mother, she was not alone. The healer, Old Mathilde, was with her, as she often was when my father was away from home. Just how old Old Mathilde is, no one really knows. But no matter what her years, she was strong and hale enough to lift my mother up and carry her indoors—through the gate in the garden wall and around the side of the house, up the steps to the front door, and across the great hall. Then, finally, up a wide set of stairs from the great hall to the second floor. By the time Old Mathilde reached my mother’s chamber, it was storming in earnest, and she, herself, was breathing hard. The wind wailed like a banshee. Hailstones clattered against the roof with a sound like military drums. Old Mathilde set my mother gently on the bed, paused to catch her breath. Then she summoned Susanne, who worked in the kitchen, instructing her to bring hot water and soft towels. But when Mathilde went to stir up the coals, the wind got there first, screaming down the chimney, putting out the fire. Not content to do this in my mother’s room alone, the wind then extinguished every other fire throughout my father’s great stone house by the sea, until not so much as a candle remained lit. All the servants quaked in fear. The women buried their heads beneath their aprons, and the men behind their arms, for nobody could remember such an event ever occurring before. And so it was first in shadow, and then in darkness, that Old Mathilde and my mother strove to bring me into the world. Just before midnight, I arrived. At my coming, the storm ceased as suddenly as it had begun. A great silence filled the great stone house. Into it came the loud voice of the sea, and then my mother’s quiet voice, asking Old Mathilde to place me in her waiting arms. She asked this just as the clocks throughout the house began to strike midnight: the only hour in all the world that begins in one day and ends in another. This was the moment I knew my mother’s touch for the first and only time. And this is the story Old Mathilde has told me each and every time I asked her to: that, with my green eyes, I gazed up, and with her green eyes, my mother gazed back down. She ran one hand across my head, her fingers lingering on my bright red hair, for this, too, was the exact same shade as her own. Then she bent her head and pressed a kiss upon my brow. I carry the mark of it to this day, the faintest smudge of rose just at my hairline. “Mathilde,” my mother said then, and with the sounding of her own name, Old Mathilde understood what my coming into the world before my time would cost. For she recognized the sound my mother’s voice made—a sound that was both less and more than it had ever been before. No one is better at understanding the world than Old Mathilde, at being able to see things for what they truly are. This is what makes her such a good healer, I suppose. For how can you mend a thing, any thing, if you cannot truly see what is wrong? Some things, of course, cannot be healed, no matter how much you want them to be, no matter how hard you try. Old Mathilde was not a magician. She was simply very good at helping wishes come true. “Will you hear a wish?” my mother asked now. Just for an instant, Old Mathilde closed her eyes, as if summoning the strength to hear what would come. For my mother was asking to bestow the most powerful wish there is, one that is a birth and death wish, all at the same time. Then Old Mathilde opened her eyes and gave the only answer she could, also the one that was in her heart. “I will grant whatever you wish that lies within my power, Constanze, my child.” Constanze d’Este. That was my mother’s name. “I wish for you to be my daughter’s godmother,” Constanze d’Este replied. “Love her for me, care for her when I am gone, for I fear her father will do neither one. When he looks at her, he will not find joy in the color of her hair and eyes. He will not see the way that I live on. Instead, he will see only that she came too soon, and that her arrival carried me out of this life. “Besides, he is a man and a great lord. He wished for his first child to be a boy.” “What you wish for is easily granted,” Old Mathilde said. “For I have loved this child with all my heart since she was no more than a dream in yours. As for Etienne . . .” Etienne de Brabant. That is my father’s name. “I suppose a man may be a great lord and a great fool all at once. What shall I call her, while I’m loving her so much?” At this point in the story, Old Mathilde always does the same thing: She smiles. Not because the circumstances she’s relating are particularly happy, but because smiling is what my mother did. “Call her by whatever name you think best,” she replied. “For you will raise her, not I.” “Then I will give her your name,” Old Mathilde said. “For she should have more of her mother than just the color of her hair and eyes, and a memory she is too young to know how to hold.” And so I was named Constanze, after my mother. And no sooner had this been decided, than my mother died. Old Mathilde sat beside the bed, her eyes seeing the two of us together even in the dark, until my mother’s lips turned pale, her arms grew cold, and the clouds outside the window parted to reveal a spangle of high night stars. Not once in all that time, so Old Mathilde has always claimed, did I so much as stir or cry. When the slim and curving sickle of the moon had reached the top of the window, then begun its slide back down the sky, Old Mathilde got up from her chair and lifted me gently from my mother’s arms. She carried me downstairs to the great open fireplace in the kitchen. Holding me in the crook of one arm, she took the longest poker she could find and stirred up the coals. Not even such a storm as had descended upon us that night could altogether put out the kitchen fire—the fire that is the heart of any house. Once the coals were glowing as they should, Old Mathilde wrapped me in a towel of red flannel, took the largest of our soup kettles down from its peg, tucked me inside it, and nestled the pot among the embers so that I might grow warm once more. As she did, I began to cry for the very first time. And at this, as if the sound of my voice startled them back into existence, all the other fires throughout the great stone house came back to life. Flurries of sparks shot straight up every chimney, scattering into the air like red-hot fireflies. In this way, I earned a second name that night, the one that people use and remember, in spite of the fact that the name Constanze is a perfectly fine one. Nobody has ever called me that, not even Old Mathilde. Instead, she calls me by the name I was given for the coals that kept me warm, for the fires I brought back to life with the sound of my own voice. Child of cinders. Cendrillon.

In general The Once Upon A Time series has quite a few hits but I'd be lying if I said it had no misses.(Midnight Pearls comes to mind) here collected in a single volume are 3 of the best in the series. Here You'll find Before Midnight as one might assume a retelling of Cinderella we also have Golden a whimsical yet heartfelt retelling of Rapunzel and Wild Orchid a retelling of Mulan. Before Midnight is definitely influenced by Perrault's most commonly recognized version of the tale. Golden puts a new Spin on the tale because our heroine does not begin her tale as a woman of unparalleled beauty or even hair for that matter! Then there is my all time favorite of the series Wild orchid. In my opinion it really brings Mulan to life giving us a picture of her girlhood and the sort of courage it must have taken to help save a nation. I definitely recommend it especially for fans of Cameron Dokey.

Love these retellings of Cinderella, Rapunzel, and Mulan! Some of my favorites by Cameron Dokey.

These are creative and fun twists on traditional fairy tales. Hard to put them down once you start!

My 13 year old love this book

I appreciate that Cameron Dokey's series puts a new spin on these classic characters. I'm a fan of many authors who retell fairy tales (like Robin McKinley and Juliette Marillier) and Dokey is up there with them now.

These are wonderful retellings of traditional tales with unexpected turns of plot. I really enjoyed reading them.

Fun light read

I loved all three books that were in this book. Each retelling had it's own unique twist n the original fairy tale that I wasn't at all bored with the story. I would recommend this book to anyone looking for an interesting spin on a classic fairy tale.

As a Kansas who's been hearing about Dennis Rader or his deeds for forty years, this is an excellent story because of the different perspective that the author provides. Kerri Rawson shares her grieving and dealing processes so vividly, not only for those murdered and for their families, but for herself and her own shocked family as they themselves were victimized. Incredibly brave and realistic writing. Reading about what a loving and supporting family she grew up with makes her father's crimes all the more unbelievable and horrifying. So glad I read this. Odd but it left me with a soothing sense of closure, peace, and this refreshing lack of having any more curiosity about the whole story/saga/BTK thing. This book really puts a lot of thoughts to rest. All these years I've wondered about how Dennis Rader's family dealt with the aftermath of his crimes. Now I feel like I know. Thank you Kerri. I feel like I know you too, now. Very good book.

I was a bit worried that this would be too much of a spiritual journey for someone like myself that isn't religious but it wasn't. Faith obviously played a role in Kerri facing all of the madness she's been put through but the book wasn't overwhelmingly religious. Instead I found it to be an amazingly insightful book. It told a side of BTK that is hard to imagine existed. It was written in a way that is easy to follow and it's hard to put down. Finished it in two days. A must read for anyone interested in the BTK case or just true crime in general.

It's okay. Kerri doesn't go into explicit details about her father's murders. It's not explotive or sensational. It is as advertised. Life with a serial killer for a father and the fallout when finding out what he is.I wasn't into the hour long section about a family camping trip, nor did I much care for all the god and religious parts.

For all we have been confronted with in the BTK story, this book was a glimpse into the personal devastation to Dennis Rader’s own family. Kerri weaves a story giving the reader the background of her growing up years with her father which allows us to truly understand the shock and trauma she has been through since the day of his arrest. I couldn’t lay this down.

I had never really thought of the families of a perpatrator until I came across an interview with Rawson years ago. She made me realize that they are crime victims as well and have an unimaginable task of healing ahead of them. This book is her story, written bluntly and honestly. My heart aches for her entire family and the story of a girl losing her father hit very close to home. I think readers will take a lot away from this book, it isn't a gruesome retelling of crimes it is a story about trauma, faith, and forgiveness.

This book was different than expected but very interesting. Her Dad was the BTK and the book shows how the murderers family are victims too. In my opinion there were signs discussed in the book but hindsight is always 20/20. I thought the book was very well written.

I have followed Kerri’s story and could not imagine the pain she and her family endured. I finished the book in two days and felt so peaceful and emotional after it. Honestly, it made me view some of my own struggles in a different way and helped me find closure to some issues I have dealt with for years. Faith is vital to Kerri but this story is relatable to everyone whether they are a believer in a higher power or not. Thank you, Kerri!

Loved this book. Finished in two days. TV doesn't show you this side of a killer. You never really understand what the family has to endure. Beautifully written.

Last year I visited Laos and the previous year it was Cambodia, and before these tourist trips I by Amazon (after first searching in book shops in Chiang Mai) had bought travelers guides printed by other firms than this actual Book. But when I later from Amazon received an Insight Guide for a third Country, I liked it so much, so that I then ordered the actual Insight Guides ”Laos & Cambodia”, to be used when next time visiting these Countries. What I especially like in the “Insight Guides” are their good Cards, that is Cards which among other for example also are showing Cities, and their names, of many of the Cities in the neighboring Countries, as many of the other travelling guides doesn’t do. And when I was in Laos it showed up that the travelling guide, “The Rough Guide to Laos”, which I then used, on the small Cards for each of the Counties in Laos, there not even were shown the Cities in the neighboring Counties. Very frustrating, especially when being a place and asking help about which way to go, and nobody understand a single word of what are told, and then not having the possibly by pointing on a Card, if the actual City should be laying in another Country or County, and then not are shown in the actual Card. All of my other traveler guides of course consist in being a single book for a single Country, but I’ve found this Book cowering 2 Countries to be fine. But concerning Angkor Vat, which is a big special visiting place, about this I bought an extra book which I read before the journey. As well as I know from my 5 “Insight Guides”, besides being the best travelers guides, when it comes to the Cards, they also are in the top of quality when we are talking about the Pictures, or the History. And actually I don’t owe a single total Historical Book about Laos, so in this Book there were some new Historical details which I first now heard, among other that during the Vietnam War, USA on Laos, that not was fighting, dropped around ½ Tons of air Bombs pr. Citizen; actual the World Record. And that yearly still around 300 Persons are killed or wounded by these Bombs. And concerning Cambodia we among other learns that when Vietnam crashed the Khmer Rouge, who among other had killed around 2 – 3 million Citizens, then during the following more than 20 years, USA, England, Thailand, and China, was sponsoring the Khmer Rouge for their fighting against Vietnam!Among other we in the book learn about the Mekong River, and the big Fish in the River, but actually I didn’t find mentioned something about the very strange and extremely big ones, which maybe more are kind of snakes or lizards than fish. A Thailand friend of mine, a chief Policeman, on a wall is having a big Picture, shoving many American soldiers (during Vietnam War, and probably by The Golden Triangle) standing holding such one, around 8 meter long (26 feet’s). And nearly each year we in the TV are seeing Thais and Laos standing by the Mekong waiting to see such one crossing the water surface. And each time this Picture makes me start thinking on the Chinese Snake figures we are seeing by all of the Temples. But if searching after special old places to visit in Laos, to me the number one is the ancient Luang Prabang City - by also reading in Thailand Historical Books - where I by a mistake, not yet have been, but is hoping soon to se. And by UNESCO World Heritage Site the Luang Prabang is considered the best preserved Town in Southeast Asia. But as the first place to visit in Cambodia it of course is Angkor, most known for the Angkor Vat. It is extremely large, and concerning Angkor, the book in the text, especially concerning its History, is telling us much, but here it would help with the small Card, covering Angkor, being bigger, and also more Pictures would for getting a better idea about the place. But of course we can buy single opening Cards where we are paying for getting into the very big district covering Angkor. When we were there 2 years ago we used many hours, by car driving, just travelling around in Angkor. A few years ago I read that Angkor Vat is the biggest Temple in the World, and 8 times as big as the number 2, which is a Temple in South America. And by being there is fantastic, by seeing so enormous many faces equal to the one on the front page, and where I previously thought that there only existed a single one, or a few such stone faces. And then instead it turned out to be the same big stone face anywhere, and on many places 4 faces pointing in the 4 different directions. And as a side remark it’s strange that back in History the Danes nearly 1,000 years ago concurred the German peninsula Rügen, and there they then found a big Good figure with 4 Faces, which they then crashed into the sea. But concerning Angkor, as written in the Book, there up to the year 1,300 ac. lived around 1 million Citizens, and many Historians writes that the big Kingdom then collapsed because of the transport and communication problems, and if they had Cars, then the World’s biggest City and Kingdom back there in 1,300 ac would not have collapsed. But there is much more in the History about the Khmers Kingdom between 800 and 1,300 ac. than what we possibly can get in this Book. But what I would call the number 2 place to visit in Cambodia is the Tonle Sap, Cambodia’s Great Lake. On the Card it looks like the River from the Lake to the Ocean is around 150 miles long, but when we were out in the Lave, we then were told that in some month each year there are connection between the Lake and the Ocean, so that they can sail to the Ocean and there from the Ocean comes water to the Lake. Probably due to a little different in the high position between the Lake and the Ocean, and then in the dry months then the Lake being a bit lower than the Ocean. But it was a strange around 60 miles long Lake to be sailing in, which we can’t get any ideas about by looking at the Card, or the Pictures in the Book. A Lake with shrubbery, and many remote nooks, where people are living in sailing wood Boats, and out in the middle of the Lake laying a bigger wood Boat with shopping and even rearing Crocodiles.I admit that I came with some side telling, besides what written in the Book, but in any case it’s an excellent traveler guide.

Insight Guides Laos and Cambodia (2013) is a sturdy, glossy, well organized 376 high quality page guide book. Colorful maps (including a helpful fold out map of Thailand, Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia - great for calculating distances)and even more colorful pictures make this book beautiful to look at, but not suitable for lugging around in a backpack. The over abundance of photos makes the book heavy and limits actual travel information (which is what a traveler wants). However, the History sections, particularly The Rise and Fall of the Khmer, are fascinating reading along with sections on Population Society and Economy. Is Insight Guides Laos and Cambodia a good read? Yes. Could I use this as my sole guide book? No, but it will make a pretty coffee table book.

Need longer and more coverage of Cambodia

"insight Guide" books are the best. I bought my first book in 2011 when we went to Belize, Guatemala & the Yucatan. It was easy to reference during our trip. Easy to read. Full color photos & maps, Broken down into regions, the history, the people, weather, events, dos & don'ts, currency, hotels, transportation, restaurants, street food, laws. I wouldn't buy any other.
