Buyer beware. You can't highlight or copy text in this book as you do in other Kindle books. In some parts of the book it will only let you select a single word at a time. In other parts you can select whole blocks of text as in any other Kindle book. That's not the way I wanted to read the book and it doesn't meet my expectations of a Kindle book as a result.As for content it's very useful and informative, but alas not useful because of this defect.I'm now getting a used hard copy and a yellow highlighter and doing it the old-fashioned way.Beyond this issue, this is a great book for learning and expanding for the weekend cook. This is not and was never meant to be a cookbook for people who are looking for quick and simple meals. It's for people who want to enjoy meals at their best, in season and with freshest quality ingredients.Like so many things Alice Waters-related, the recipes are a bit slapdash and mercurial and not very well written. Take the cassoulet recipe for instance, and reading through it you realize you're making duck confit, stock from the same duck after AGING the duck, that the duck confit can be made much in advance and the flavor will improve (the stock can apparently be frozen), and then you're moving on to all the other steps, which, reading through you will reorder logically.I don't mind though, because I learn the recipe that way and improve my skills and techniques and knowledge, which is why I like cooking this way (plus we get to eat well).If you enjoy cooking and trying new things, this is a great book for you. It's not for the cook who wants things on the table cheap, easy, and fast, and who complains about the difficulty of having to search out ingredients (which I love, since it's a great way to learn and improve as a cook).

Had to get it after seeing the Jerimiah Towers movie!

This is an excellent cookbook to add to your gourmet collection. There are quite a few recipes in here that one would consider to be more fine dining than an average home cook might want, but for the serious cook it is an excellent book to stretch the culinary imagination.

There's a lot of good sense and good food in this book, but the California style is getting a bit past mark of mouth, if you'll permit an archaic phrase/pun. I've made a few of these dishes, and they're fine, but somehow this isn't the book I pick up and flip through, asking myself, "what's for dinner?" With Jody Adams, Daniel Boulud, and Pat Wells on the shelf, I'm not sure I'd call this a "must have" addition. But, if you're a Waters fan, go for it .

The menus described are largely heavy, fat and meat filled. Not what I was expecting. And while I appreciate the are of wine/food pairing, most of these dinners had far too much alcohol.

It was a gift for my daughter, who is a chef. She loves it. I don't know much more about it.

Peter DeWitt (Ed.D) is a former K-5 teacher (11 years) and principal (8 years). I have read many leadership books. Some have a lot of philosophy and others have practical ideas, but collaborative leadership has both. DeWitt not only uses the research of John Hattie, which he knows well because Hattie wrote the foreword, he pulls in practical ideas that he used as a principal and others who are still in the role. If you like DeWitt’s Ed Week blog, you’ll love this book!

"What if you could be the kind of principal you want to be?" As an aspiring administrator, I found Collaborative Leadership: Six InfluencesThat Matter Most to be quite different from other leadership books. I am inspired by Peter's courageous leadership, honest reflections, insights from working with John Hattie, and the stories from his PLN (personal/professional learning network). He explains why collaborative leadership (either on its own or in conjunction with transformation and instructional leadership) is preferable to other types of leadership. And Peter not only explains the WHY but the HOW. Once I started reading, I couldn't put the book down! It's definitely a book that I highly recommend, will use as a go-to reference book and will share with my colleagues!

I would recommend this book to any educational leader. The research is solid, and the writing style is easy to digest. There are long-range implications, with concrete steps of how to start tomorrow. Thank you Peter De Witt!

The mountain flying portion alone is worth the price of admission, because it provides valuable information and techniques for understanding and operating in varying wind and terrain conditions. Other than the brilliant work of the Canadians in British Columbia, no one has put this out for pilots who need the tools to fly effectively and safely in the mountains. I know, because I spent the last 25 years of my aviation career teaching and evaluating helicopter operations in the mountains, as a pilot, instructor, and FAA Inspector. This concise, easy to navigate book is a gem. Get it. Study it. And learn to take advantage of the winds and the terrain before they take advantage of you. Fly safe!

Good book but the FAA book has more information and is more detailed. It is clean and is pretty basic stuff to get you started on getting your pilots license.

It is not a detailed ground course, but it does offer good information for advanced helicopter pilot situations. it is great for pilots that may want to work in these environments and are courious about the various considerations. I am not disappointed to add it to my reference library.

I gave it as a gift to a helicopter pilot. He said he will enjoy reading it.

I've read about everything I can find on Chernobyl. I am an environmental engineering professor and I am most interested in the impacts of the explosion. Nuclear engineering is not my specialty but it is easy to understand the problems that caused the explosion. This account covers the explosion, the people involved and the consequences but not in the same detail that others have written, such as G Medevdve or Piers Paul Read. I think the precise details of the event will never be known, but the author is a little kinder to Dyatlov. He does state that most observers at the trial believed he was the most culpable. Certainly Medevdve puts the blame squarely on Dyatlov for a variety of bad decisions. What's different about this book is that it is current and contains information on the later effects the explosion. We American's sometimes think we Ronald Reagan outspent the Soviet Union on star wars weapons, but I think the reality is different. Their economy was bad and because of Chernobyl, people understood that they could not believe their government. "Soviet nuclear reactors are safe - it is only in the capitalist west that profits are more important than safety." If you have not read much on Chernobyl then this book will give you a pretty complete understanding of the issues. If you have read a lot, it will give you a little different view on the events leading up to and just after the explosion, but more importantly, a new perspective on the later impacts of damage of the lies and secrecy of the Soviet system on its final demise.

I purchased this book because I was interested to learn what I missed. In April 1986 (when the reactor exploded), I was a senior in high school, just weeks short of graduation and thus oblivious to the world. Thorough in his approach, this book explores the disaster from the foundations - back in the 1960's when the Russian nuclear energy program was just getting started in Pripyat. In painstaking and excrutiating detail, he explores the disaster step by step. What I did not expect was the broader perspective he offered on Russian history since then. The author asserts that one of the key reasons for the collapse of the USSR was Chernobyl. Perhaps I am not sufficiently well-read, but that was the first I had encountered that argument. Based on his research and presentation, I find his argument quite compelling.

I returned from a trip to Kiev and a tour of Chernobyl and Pripyat last week. It is so interesting to read this book now! I have been fascinated with the Chernibyl disaster for years (and have a friend that was born in Pripyat) and it was so great to see this book come out recently. I also visited the Chernobyl museum in Kiev and so wish that I had read this book first . At the museum there are photos, identification cards, and other memorabilia from many of the people discussed in this book. I wish I had known at the time who each of these people were. I highly recommend reading this book before going to Kiev if you plan to in the future. I have read many details about the disaster online at a variety of sites and this book is a fabulous collection of everything in one place! Yes, it does have a lot of politics in it, but that is very important to the event.

I have found myself drawn into the story of Chernobyl the last few months and this is the ultimate, authoritative history in my view. Extremely readable. One hesitates to say "enjoyable" anywhere near a tragedy on this scale... but the writing is excellent, both at the level of language and story-telling. I had no idea to what extent Chernobyl isn't just a tragedy of the past, but potentially on an ongoing danger of apocalyptic proportions. And there are other similar potential dangers in the world. I wish these issues were more in the news. Pass this book around.

I liked the level of detail when the author dealt with the aftermath of this disaster -- the individuals, the details, etc. The author seemed to have no favorites or "unfavorites" in this accounting. I have read many Chernobyl and other nuclear power misadventure books, and Plokhy's "Chernobyl" filled some gaps in my knowledge of this unfortunate and unnecessary catastrophe.Highly recommended to those who wish to know more about the Chernobyl nuclear accident, its principals, and other informative details.

Outstanding review of what really happened at Chernobyl. This should be required reading for anyone wanting to know about nuclear energy, but more importantly how the soviets handled this disaster. The KGB and leaders let their people down in spite of the sacrifices the Ukraine people and others made to desperately control the radiation and the poisonous effects it had.

I did not detect an obfuscation . Both the errors made and the bravery are presented without egsageration . Given that this is the Soviet Union the bureaucrats were not so bad

This history fills in a void about one of the most devastating nuclear accidents in recent memory. It provides an important link to the dissolution of the USSR. It also puts Gorbachev role in the disaster in a very interesting perspective.

I am a Chinese. And I am familiar with ancient Chinese political thought. This book is great in that it gives a general picture of the different schools in the Spring and Autumn era. Recommend to anyone who is interested in ancient Chinese political ideas.

The gist of Benjamin Schwartz's account of the evolution of Chinese philosophy is that, moral right does exist, and it is the responsibility of all people to pursue it. This view point alone, implies many assumption on the origin, purpose and ability of mankind. Considering the notion of moral responsibility was one that developed through time, as rulers and wise men refined and renounced Heaven's command, it is a view point that greatly obstructs Schwartz's clear view of history. Among the many credits paid the girthy, four hundred and ninety page book, The World of Thought in Ancient China, objectivity was among the most resonant. Objectivity, in the form of Schwartz's distant yet familiar observation of Chinese thought. As distant as any self-prescribed, outsider would be. The folly of so many philosophical accounts of the eastern world by westerners, is that they reflect on their own western life experiences, and socially derived ethics, to measure Asia's by. Schwartz, by the testimony of all reviewers who read him, takes on the role of a "sophisticated guide", who's knowledge of the east is not sullied by his attachment to the west. At the same time Schwartz's perspective is familiar, in the sense that in his pursuit to capture the essence of eastern philosophy, and present it sensibly to new world readers, he does not abandon his cultural essence. Objectivity and accuracy is reached somewhere between honesty and insight. Ironically, this seems to parallel the movement of philosophical wisdom which Schwartz maps out from the early Chou kings of China, through Confucianism, Taoism and eventually up to the present. The ultimate wisdom of the ages, which Schwartz reveals as he dissects the history of China, is that the best-fit solution often exists between diametrically opposed opinions. Unfortunately, Schwartz, himself is the only participant in this review of history who is lost to this fact. Benjamin Schwartz is much more then a sophisticated guide. His take on Chinese philosophy pays significantly more lip service to thinkers who's concepts conflict least with his core western beliefs. Even those which conflict with each other. For example, the divination of the Chou dynasty, Chinese kings. Believing, or knowingly misleading others to believe they were ordained by Heaven's command to rule, Chou kings assumed and abused their power. The two questions Schwartz asks, and answers are, "why [do] humans, and rulers in particular, go astray rather than maintain the order that was confirmed for them by Heaven" and "how [can] the vanguard of society recognize its responsibility, and develop the means, to restore that normative order"? Both, loaded questions, they suggest a definitive, heavenly order exists, and that it is, or should be the responsibility of rulers to follow it. To reinforce this notion, Schwartz sites Confucian thought, which expands the responsibility to do right, to the remainder of middle class and peasantry in China. Similar to the expansion of heaven's gates through the Christian reformation in Europe. Schwartz supports, contrary to centuries of Chinese thought, that Heaven's command is a doctrine for all. Schwartz latches on to other Confucian principles such as the significance of fate in an individuals moral behavior, and agrees with the philosopher that fate does not negate the responsibility of each individual to follow Heaven's command. A position which echoes that of "free will". Under it's Chinese name, "Jen." This is yet another Christian concept, that oozes its way into Schwartz "objective" analysis. Where Schwartz finds chinks in Chinese philosophical theory, he exercises draconian editorial discretion, glossing over major themes and prevailing opinions of eastern thought. And where he faces dissent head on, he adopts a classic, western, air of infallibility. He, outright, labels the non-introspective interpretation of "Jen", as wrong, since the idea of moral behavior not coming from internal review contradicts western legal principles which require motive, intent, and composure, in accessing personal liability. This concept goes directly against his previously held belief, in the irrefutable command of Heaven, which we all follow or are required to. The notion of personal, auto-review of moral behavior and moral judgment also comes into question. Schwartz aligns himself along the opinion supporting independent assessment of one's own behavior. But fails to recognize legal provisions that allow for decriminalization of those who are incapable of such reflection, in western courts. Not surprisingly, his most scathing criticism is directed at the teachings of Lao and Chuang Tzu, founders of Taoism. Who advocated an end to Heaven's command, and a return to uncontemplated, non-reflective action. Believing that the internal mechanism, which judges and prescribes moralistic behavior would guide unconscious action towards right. Taoism was the exhalation of the individual, and the breakdown of the unwritten moral code. Schwartz, a believer in individual understanding of Heaven's command, is however, not an individualist. Ultimately, doesn't trust people enough to be lead by their own moral compasses. Further more, his old-world, elitist view, has no room for the universal ethic of Taoism which puts the average man's morality on par with that of the bourgeois, and even more blasphemous, to raise the morality of the common peasant to the heights of the irrefutable command from heaven. Taoism's foremost crime against Benjamin Schwartz's ethical ideal, is that it gives no reason for an individual to act morally. Essentially it's akin to the civil libertarianism of modern politics, but differs in it's open ended acceptance of amoral behavior without judgment or punishment. For a man with as limited an amount of faith in humanity, as Benjamin Schwartz, this is too much freedom for the average person to enjoy. Ultimately, Schwartz tours the history of thought in China exactly as he claimed he would, a sophisticated guide. Surrounded by a sense of moral superiority, he views China as a foot note in history, who's philosophical achievements, insignificant by themselves, require juxtaposition against the thinking of western minds to validate them. His benevolent sophistication is confused with arrogance, and his inability to question his own understanding of what it is to be moral and why, finally infect the spirit of the book, and renders it simply, another manifesto on western supremacy. Where Schwartz fails, is that he sells the book as an objective history of china, while he excoriates and equivocates each concept that arises throughout China's dynasties, as if qualified to decide what morality really is. This book was written with a clear market in mind,conservatives and xenophobes. Perhaps they would enjoy Benjamin Schwartz's take on the world, because I certainly don't.
