Review

“The eminent entomologist, naturalist and sociobiologist draws on the experiences of a long career to offer encouraging advice to those considering a life in science… Glows with one man’s love for science.” - Kirkus Reviews“Edward O. Wilson, the evolutionary biologist who has studied social behavior among insects and humans, offers advice to aspiring researchers…A naturalist at heart, he plays down technology, math, even intelligence, proposing that a good scientist should be ‘bright enough to see what can be done but not too bright as to become bored doing it.’…delivers deep insights into how observation and experiment drive theory.” - Jascha Hoffman, New York Times“I want to express my gratitude. Thank you for reminding me and thousands of others why we became scientists. Your book Letters to a Young Scientist is first and foremost a book about passion and the delight of discovery.” - Bill Streever, New York Times Book Review“In this fund of practical and philosophical guidance distilled from seven decades of experience, Wilson provides exactly the right mentoring for scientists of all disciplines―and all ages… This is no pompous, deeply philosophical treatise on how great ideas develop. Wilson shares his simple love for ants and their natural history, revelling in them without hesitation. Everything else follows.” - Nature“Inspiring… Ought to be on the shelves of all high school and public libraries.” - Library Journal

As its title implies, Edward Wilson's "Letters to a Young Scientist" (2013) is cast in the form of 20 letters addressed to young people who are considering science as a career. The book says a great deal about science and study, but it is much more. The book teaches that a person should have passion for what he or she chooses to make of life, whether in science or in another field. The book teaches about science and about the value of hard work and persistence. Thus, this short book can be read with pleasure not only by budding scientists but by general readers as well. I am retired and never seriously considered science as a career choice. Still, I want to discuss what I learned from Wilson's thinking.Wilson's accomplishments over a life devoted to science make his ideas worth considering. In a career of over 50 years as a biologist, most of which he spent teaching at Harvard, he has written prolifically both for lay readers and for scientists. He has founded the disciplines of sociobiology as well as the discipline of biogeography. Wilson won two Pulitzer Prizes, the Crawfoord Prize for ecology, and many other awards. He is also the world's leading authority on ants. In the "Letters", for example, he discusses a work that he wrote over an eight-year period late in his career: "Pheidole in the New World: A Dominant Hyperdiverse Ant Genus" (2003).Pheidole in the New World: A Dominant, Hyperdiverse Ant Genus This is obviously a work for specialists. It is unsurprising that Wilson relies on his own experience for much of the advice he gives in the Letters. His most important advice comes at the outset of the book and is reiterated many times. Wilson emphasizes the importance of passion and desire to a budding scientists. He writes:"My confessional instead is intended to illustrate an important principle I've seen unfold in the careers of many successful scientists. It is quite simple; put passion ahead of training. Feel out in any way you can what you most want to do in science, or technology, or some other science-related profession. Obey that passion as long as it lasts. Feed it with the knowledge the mind needs to grow. Sample other subjects, acquire a general education in science, and be smart enough to switch to a greater love if one appears. But don't just drift through courses in science hoping that love will come to you. Maybe it will, but don't take the chance. As in other big choices in your lfe, there is too much at stake. decision and hard work based on enduring passion will never fail you."Regardless of a person's career goal and regardless of the individual's stage in life, passion for what one does is critical for meaningful activity. Wilson illustrates his advice with discussion of his own life, beginning with his youthful fascination with biology and nature, including snakes, butterflies, and ants. He is a person who did with his life what he was born to do. After recounting experiences of his boyhood searching for insects, Wilson writes, "I've gone into this boyhood story to make a point that may be relevant to your own career trajectory. I have never changed."Wilson also discusses the importance of the entreprenurial spirit even for a field such as science with includes ambition, the ability to engage in many projects of various sizes at the same time, ambition to succeed, and the willingness to take risks. He again illustrates entrepreneurship in science with many examples from his own experience as a biologist and from his experience working with other scientists.Besides advice which has application beyond young people and beyond science, Wilson has much to say about scientific work itself. He describes the relationship between science and math, the tension between individual creativity and teamwork in science, the importance of mentorship, and much more. Wilson makes much of the importance of creativity, likening scientific accomplishment to the work of a poet, informed with background and hard work.I remain most impressed with Wilson's patient lifelong work learning about ants. He writes that when he began his career, there were perhaps a dozen specialists on ants in the world. From studying ants, Wilson broadened his focus to include ecology, evolutionary biology, sociobiology, and consilience -- synthesizing knowledge from various fields. But ants remained central. Wilson writes to prospective scientists of his massive study of "Pheidole" (a large genus of ants) that I mentioned above:"You may think of my story of ants as only a narrow slice of science, of interest chiefly to the researchers focused on it. You would be quite right. But it is nonetheless at a different level from an equally impassioned devotion to, say, fly fishing, Civil War battlegrounds, or Roman coins. The findings of its lesser grails are a permanent addition to knoweldge of the real world. They can be linked to other bodies of knowledge, and often the resulting networks of understanding lead to major advances in the overall epic of science."Wilson's Letters offer a great deal to young people interested in devoting their lives to science. The book also taught me, and will teach other non-scientific readers, much about science, scientific discovery, and the love of science. In its discussion of passion and commitment, exemplified in Wilson's life, the book has a universal message for people at all stages of life.Robin Friedman

So, I was more than a little surprised that a new book by EO Wilson was out for more than 8 seconds without a single review yet posted on Amazon. I rarely write a review unless I feel passionately about an item -- at one end of the spectrum or another -- but I could not resist the chance to write the first review for a book by a scientist whom I revere and admire for his indomitable energy and unrelenting productivity.I should preface my review by acknowledging that I am a somewhat biased devotee of Wilson's in that I think he and I share much in common: I am a snake biologist (Professor Wilson was nicknamed "Snake" by his comrades as a teenager, as he went through a three-year stint as an amateur ophiologist [a fancy word for "snake biologist"] before he turned to studying ants), I'm a Southerner (He is too.), I'm an evolutionary biologist (He is too.), an Eagle Scout (So is he.), a science educator (yep, you guessed it...), and I am a proponent of conserving biodiversity (and Ed is the proverbial Patriarch and Anointed High Priest of that unifying concept in science). I mention these aforementioned biases not to share my résumé, but because this book bends to all of those, among others. And so, as I rightly guessed, Mr. Wilson would draw upon a lot of these shared interests in order to make his points and teach us. (This may be a downside for those of you who connect more readily with chemistry, physics, or astronomy examples. This book might have been more aptly called "Letters to a Young Biologist", but I think the title the publishers went with is the right one.)I am also among Wilson's target readers -- young aspiring scientists, but more emphatically -- anyone who would love to be a success as a scientist. This book has helped me feel less daunted by the sometimes mistaken commonly perceived demands of science."Letters to a Young Scientist" is a clarion call for many MANY more people to join the ranks of natural scientists and to embrace a life of scientific investigation. Ed Wilson leaves no one with room for excuses to fail in this endeavor. He addresses the concept (or reality?) that if we humans are to survive the foreseeable future, we need to be a science-minded people.Perhaps some of the most comforting aspects of the book are that Wilson belabors the point that you don't need to be a math wiz or even have a high IQ to be a great scientist. (Ed did not take Calculus until he was a 32-year-old professor at Harvard, and his grade was a C.) He divulges his own IQ as a modest "If I can do it without genius levels, you can too" admission. In fact, he argues that a high IQ can be something of a detriment to a scientific career.Since many readers are likely to also be followers of Wilson's other works and thus, interested in biology, another book that I have found to have been written in a similar spirit of deep caring and empathy for the non-stereotypical and uninitiated scientist is Reading the Story in DNA: A Beginner's Guide to Molecular Evolution; it is written for the scientist interested in the whole organism, but who wants to understand how to DO and get started on molecular evolution research and techniques, WITHOUT all of the math. I think you'll love it.Okay. Now, back to "Letters"...Do I agree with everything written in this collection of sagely correspondence? No. One such point of contention for me was when Wilson admonished readers on how many hours they should expect to devote to teaching, administrative duties, research, etc if they choose an academic profession -- the part I didn't like was when he says [paraphrasing], "Only rest from work and seek diversion on weekends. Don't take vacations; real scientists don't take vacations. They go on field trips." As a herpetologist, I know of several friends and colleagues who use their vacation-time to take their families looking for snakes (for fun and research) in prime, wonderful habitat; they have formed rich memories that lasted a lifetime, and all family members seem to have enjoyed those times and remember them with fondness. I do hope to adopt that with my toddler. And perhaps Wilson's assertion is slightly tongue-in-cheek here, BUT, as a father, I'm also cautious to not subject my son in his vacation time to always doing dad's hobby or livelihood. And hey, I love Disney World, so my son won't know it's not totally for him. ;) But, once again, I digress...If you have already read other works by Wilson, you will likely see some redundancy of ideas and stories in this book, such as his informal rules of biological evolution he has pointed out in Consilience: The Unity of Knowledge, for instance (i.e.. "For every unanswered problem or question in nature, there exists a species suited to solving that problem."). You will also hear of how he and MacArthur came up with the Theory of Island Biogeography. He uses his collection of examples and ideas as a teaching tool for how to think and create like a scientist. And keep in mind, this book is meant as an introductory rabble-rouser, in the best sense -- as a shot in the arm for the passionate tenderfoot -- so some review of Wilson's life's work is expected, albeit it is in a fresh, new light. And there are new nuggets of wisdom gleaned from over 60 years as an Ivy League researcher. He has offered two different ways that convergently lead to the formation of a scientist: (1) the problem-solver who often employs models -- organismal or otherwise -- to get to the bottom of unanswered questions, and (2) the naturalist who loves and finds pleasure in his or her favorite species or phenomenon for the sake of its mere existence, who tries to learn all that is currently known on the topic, and is naturally led to questions. Again, since Wilson is drawing on his own experience, he mostly explores the latter pathway to sciencedom.Overall, I would highly encourage young and old scientists to read this book. It is, as the title suggests, non-technical, and is suitable for high schoolers and mature-minded middle schoolers. (And older.) E.O. Wilson can indeed offer advice on most aspects of doing science, from encouraging "quick and sloppy" experiments on a whim (some of his own produced no noteworthy results for him at all; others paid handsome dividends beyond reasonable hope), the importance of daydreaming and fantasizing about science, taking the responsibility of being a world expert on a subject (which he asserts is often easier and quicker than most people think), to devising testable and successful frameworks of conceptual knowledge that we call scientific theories.I've a very sorry track record when it comes to finishing books, but I read this one in three or four days quite easily. It's a quick read, even for this notoriously slow, easily distracted reader. The main idea of this book is that you don't need to fit the stereotype of a scientist (e.g. math wiz, genius, poor communicator [I added that last one]) in order to be a good scientist. AND if you don't fit the stereotype, you are exactly what the world and scientific community at large really lacks. Ed Wilson says that the world needs your unique talents, badly. I agree. Happy reading! I would recommend this book as a gift to young people. Buy a copy, read it yourself, and then give it away.

This is a good book, but it seems more like an autobiography with some bits and pieces of wisdom here and there than an advice book or guide for young scientists. It does tell you some helpful tips, but too rarely for it to be advertised as an advice book. The one example he brings up through the book is his study on ants, which is great, and very interesting, don't get me wrong, but it seems like the study is too specific to use as an example for the entire topic of science. If it gave a bit more advice, this would be a great book. I'm sure some people still find it helpful, but it just wasn't really what I was looking for in this book.

I believe a more accurate but less catchy title would be "Letters from an Old Scientist". While I certainly respect Wilson, I believe he tries too hard to extrapolate his 50+ years of experience forward to the next 50 years. In so doing, he overestimates the relevance of challenges he faced decades ago in the future and neglects the tremendous disruptions that are happening today. I would have liked to hear more about the relevance of technology going forward. Genetic mapping and computer modeling are changing the ways research is done, yet little is mentioned. Also, the tremendous shift away from publicly financed research (especially in universities) towards the financially motivated private sector is diluting any "knowledge for knowledge's sake" initiatives. If you can't monetize it, you probably can't fund it.While I did find the book an interesting read, I wouldn't pass it on to college students today as guidance for a career in science.

This book is cute, and features several different farm animals. It's a little confusing for a toddler who is learning animal sounds, as some of the animals "trick" Spot by making another animal's sound before you lift the flap and see who's actually hiding. Hopefully that makes sense. Another thing that's a personal preference is one at least one of the pages, Spot asks a question of an animal before lifting the flap, and when you lift the flap, the animal hiding shouts "No!" I'm not overly fond of books that may teach my toddler to shout no. :)

Read the other 1-start reviews... the plot here is terrible... it's like the editor on this Spot book was asleep... not at all like the other ones... I bought this one alongside a few others, and this one my wife and I had to get rid of after the first reading... doesn't make sense, confuses our 2yr old just as the other 1-star reviewers have said. Listen to these voices... spend your money on the other books.

My daughter loved this book between the ages of 12-14 months. She loved to make the sounds of each animal when she opened the flaps and found out what they were. Now she’s 16 months old, she’s moved on to books with a little more storylines but she still goes back to this book from time to time and still enjoys telling me what each animal is and what they say.

We have several Spot books but my son loves this one so much. He looks through it again and again, raising the flaps. We have a lot of fun with it!I had to knock off a star because I didn't know by looking at the cover (and not reading the description carefully) that the other character is "dad." I prefer Sally the mom.

its ok. I like the other Spot books, the good thing is this has flaps and the baby loves it but the story line leaves something to be desired. its kind fo annoying to read with all the odd dialogue, but again this is preference. my kid loves to flap the flaps and thats all that matters I guess!

I grew up with Spot books and was excited to buy some for my nephew. He loves them just as much as I do! This was a great purchase and I will be buying more in the near future!

Sweet story with adorable farm animals. The glad to lift keep my 16 month old busy for about 15 minutes on his own. In the car this is a perfect option to keep young ones entertained. The flaps are fairly durable. My guy has roped off one fap after 4 months of use, but it is easily repaired and looks like new.

I got this book for my son because he loves the book, Where's spot? He loves his book just as much as he loves Where's spot? He loves opening the flaps. Recommend this book!

I have been waiting months for this book to come out, because I am a huge fan of Bonny Lhotka’s artwork and the art materials she has come up with, and how she is continually exploring new ideas and finding new inspirations. She is a renowned artist and this book is more like detailed techniques and ideas for people who are already involved in this process, or for those who are determined to delve into it. There are a number of inspiring examples of her artwork included in the book, but do not get this book if you are looking for some quick tips or fun ideas for a Saturday craft. But for photographers who want to create unique images and go beyond a photo printed on photo paper and learn to create unique works of art on glass, wood, metal, etc, or artists who want to incorporate digital images, this is a great resource. There are thousands of books on photography, books on art, and books on craft ideas, but there are very few books that address this combination of art and photography. Two criticisms that I see people could easily make: 1. She makes use of (DASS) materials that she has developed and you have to buy them from her. True! But if you have done any experimenting with, or research on transfer materials, you will find that there is no comparison to the quality and consistency of the ones she has developed. 2. The projects and descriptions are overwhelmingly technical. Also true. But that is often the point of a book. The distortion filters and distressed reflectors intrigued me and I’ll probably try some out, but in a simplified way. If, however, I do end up hooked, I can then follow her instructions on making the more complicated ones and even building that filter holder.I’m giving this book a five star rating because, while I know it is not a book with general appeal, it totally succeeds as the book for me! And even though there is a lot of technical instruction, I’d rather have more than less. For now I’ll use Windex to clean my glass, but if I want to make her specialized glass cleaning paste, I know where to find the recipe.

This author is on the CUTTING EDGE of multimedia photo meets printing and digital print transferring.B P Lhotka is the authority on how to transfer images to materials using archival transfer agents. She has done the testing, developed the products to create multi layered images on many materials. I purchased serveral of her books after attending her DASS product workshops.

Some good basic information on mixed media and digital imaging, but the last 1/3 was not practical for a single artist working out of there own studio. The equipment needed is out of reach for most artist.

Great ideas for thinking outside of the box creatively and good resources

ok

A wee bit above my technical skills. Very informative and a excellent source book.

Very informative. I have enjoyed all of Bonnie Lhotka’s books. Opens up many new areas to explore in my art.

I love all her books!

It's a pretty poor textbook with no homework, as in a more traditional and effective textbook, resulting in the instructor being forced to create homework assignments too often. I've been teaching 20+ years - English 7, 8, 9, civics, economics, 7th and 9th grade world history, driver's ed., health, P.E., physical science, 7th grade science, 8th grade science, special education, 11th grade U.S. history, 8th grade U.S. History (and I might be forgetting something) - and I dislike this text more than any other I've used. So, like it or not, this is what our district uses, so here I am.

This workbook contains graphic organizers, questions, simple activities, and clip art, to support a junior high curriculum from the fall of Rome through the Enlightenment. Besides Europe, it includes Islam, China, Japan, West Africa, and the Americas. Although the pages obviously correspond to a specific textbook, if you make a photocopy of the page you need, you can crop or change the worksheet with white-out to fit your lesson. I find that jr. high students love to write in boxes, so it is a nice change from having them take notes on lined paper, and most of the work is already done. This book would be especially helpful for a new teacher, or someone changing subjects. A high quality, used workbook is definitely worth the money.

These textbooks and workbooks are so much more hands-on and fun than others.

Perfect to use with textbook.

There are many good student exercises that emphasize thinking outside the box. However, the directions for independent student use could be vastly improved. This "workbook" is a good beginning piece for teachers to use with their students as they infuse Common Core strategies into their history curriculum. This workbook when combined with the publisher's digital teacher materials is a GREAT tool not just a good tool for classroom teachers!

#12,524 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

From a gentleman's daughter to a seamstress to a friend to fallen women to a special friend to a young man of the peerage, Fanny indeed has transformed. Throw in an intriguing murder and there you have it. Fanny however almost misses her greatest opportunity by clinging to a ideal of romance. This author is one of my favorites. Her mastery of language kept my fingers busy with a dictionary, humbling to be found so deficient. For example, do you know the delightful word, "lambent"? It means flickering, softly radiant, incandescent, lucent, brilliance, luminous, used to describe the light in a young woman's eyes.

I've read all the Winterton sisters so far, and this one was especially delightful. I loved Fanny. She also annoyed me at times, but I feel that's normal, with our differences in personality. This is a sweet, unique story. It's not high action or fast paced, no, but I really liked the slow build up between her and Ferdy, as well as the triple murder in the background. *beware of some spoilers ahead*What a couple of dorks! I loved how mild mannered, yet lovesick, Ferdy was, even in the worst of circumstances (and it gets kind of bad). He handled everything with grace and civility. Even when rejected by Fanny, he went out of his way to see that she was comfortable in his presence and around his family, because he loved her. You just don't meet guys like that every day! I loved how friendly his whole family was, and that they didn't care a bit about Fanny's status or lack of dowry. It was sweet. I could really feel the warm family atmosphere the Makenham's had, and it reminded me of my own. Not these cold, supercilious rich people we so often see in Regency stories. That Ferdy and Fanny were both so attentive to clothing design, fit, and presentation was cute. It made me think, 'wow, these two were really a match made in heaven.' They kind of reminded me of Charles Bingley and Jane Bennet. Just two unfailingly kind, sweet-natured people. I do agree that the way you present yourself is extremely important, and you can tell a lot about a person by the care they put into their appearance. So I enjoyed the descriptions of clothing and style. It seemed fitting, considering it was Fanny's livelihood, in a way, and Ferdy's hobby. It made their characterizations believable to me.I did get annoyed at Fanny's excessive.. romantic.. ideals. I could clearly tell they were meant to be, but Fanny just *had* to have that "thunderbolt" moment where she knew she was madly in love. I don't really believe in that stuff, so it wore on my nerves to see her reject poor Ferdy on those grounds. I think you can meet someone and just *know*, but I don't think you need to be struck suddenly with undeniable passion and adoration for a person. Regardless of how long it took, I was very happy to see things work out.I did think the crime angle wasn't quite as prominent as some of others, but that probably had to do with the nature of the murders. People kept tryin to sweep it under the rug because two of the women were prostitutes, like that means they're not human. LUCKILY my boy Ferdy is a sweet darling who wouldn't take that BS. Just for that, he was my favorite of the Winterton suitors.I could predict the culprit almost as soon as they were introduced, but I usually can with these novels. However, I find it very interesting to see how it all unfolds, and their motivation for such a crime. It all wrapped up nicely, though I can't imagine regarding a person so calmly, even if I knew them from childhood, if they had raped or murdered women who were beneath their station and therefore "beneath" anyone's notice. I don't think I could even be in the same room as him. I guess things were different back then.Overall, a sweet, happy romance between two sweet, happy people, with mystery and intrigue to boot! Looking forward to seeing how this all wraps up in Book 5.

I was hooked when I read the excerpt for this book at the end of book 3 (The Companion), so I was really looking forward to reading it. However, the story developed too slowly to be truly gripping. Ferdie drove me crazy with his obsession with good manners and Fanny was too silly for words. I know she was young and the time period has to be considered, but she had no backbone whatsoever. She was too, too romantic-minded. In addition, it took way too long for them to finally meet and start getting to know each other. Eventually, Ferdie stood up for his love and Fanny realized what true love is, but it all came about so slowly that it took me forever to finish this book, which is unusual for me with this author. However, the dialogue and descriptions are true to the time period, so I give it 2.5 stars. Still looking forward to the last book, "Woodside".

I found this title to be the weakest one I've read by this author. All the characters seem sort of weak and pathetic. Wishywashy. Not a single character seems to have any strong emotion. Fanny, for a character who say marriage without love is not worth having comes across as a character who doesn't feel strongly enough to have that kind of passion. And Ferdie seems to foc;used on appropriate behavior to ever go after what he wants or to ever stand up against what is wrong. I never finished it. Maybe I will eventually, but they are just so boring as characters that I find it hard to push through. The maid who was raped and tossed out when she ended up pregnant seemed to have more personality than any of the main characters.

The story progressed at a sloths pace......page after page of slow moving story. The slowness in their even being in each other's company is finally reached well into the story. Page after page describing the outfits and clothing being worn by the not only the women but also the men! Every few pages someone's clothes are being detailed and then following this are endless paragraphs on what is says about the person. Absolutely lifeless! Didn't finish.

My 9 year old grandson is in love with this series of books. It has turned him from a beginning reader into a devoted reader. I had bought him all but 3 of the the books in an amazing close-out at a bookstore, filled in the missing 3 with purchases from Amazon (thank you Amazon), but initially he did not want the Guide Book. Later I bought it for him spontaneously, and once he had the book, he was enthralled. He talks about it often. Loves all the information which compiles in one place a lot of the background information of the books from what I gather. All I can say is, it was a tremendously successful purchase for a boy well and truly in love with these books.

I purchased the rest of the series plus the extras of these books. My 9 year old granddaughter and I are both reading them together and discussing what we have read. She bought the first 3 of this series at a school book fair, because I like owls. We are having a wonderful time with these books they have adventure and compasion. This series is not just for children, I can't wait to get to the next book when I am finished one. The names of the owls are a little hard to pronounce, so just make it up if your having a hard time.I received these books in perfect condition within just a few days from Amazon. I will continue to order through Amazon they are a wonderful company.

First of all, great book. However, there are a few flaws, the first being with the excessive lengths of one chapter. The stories chapter was so long and so much like Lost Tales of Ga'Hoole that I felt as if it was simply an extension of said book. However, the other parts of the book were absolutely amazing and fit in very well with everything from the main 15 books. However, she should have waited and written the final three books before publishing this one, because a lot happens in River of Wind, Exile, and The War of the Ember.

Reading is very slow on this book comparied to the series. What is it best for is learning all about the different owls of the tree, celebrations and other artifacts that make the series tie together. It is more like reading a dictionary of who's who. It is interesting but very technical for the young reader.

My daughter has started reading this book before the series, and she is excited to finish it and start the first book! She really enjoys reading this book, and I am sure she will enjoy the books of the series!

I haven't had time to do more than skim this book but I look forward to deepening my knowledge of the Great Tree and its community and history. I'll be interested to see what Huang adds to Lasky's conceptualizations.
