David Whyte is worth listening to again and again. I never fail to learn something new when listening to this audiobook - which is better than the book I'm my opinion because he seems to read his material the way he meant it to be heard.I return to this book at certain times in my life and will find new meaning in the old and mundane and learn things that didn't catch my attention before.Because of David Whyte I have begun to memorize poety - not only his poetry but others he mentions like Rilke or Mary Oliver. The thing is that all of these new age or self development books have the same message when you get to the bottom of it all. You just have to find the one that speaks to your soul.

I wish the "midlife" reference were not in the title as it made me hesitate and delay trying this product for way too long. It is such an exquisite treat and so powerful in way more ways than I can convey through words. David Whyte's uniquely powerful delivery adds further punch to his great insights that reach ever deeper the more one listens. Thus I found it amazing the first time I listened and keep being blown away by finding it ever more powerful every time I listen. In addition to the content, the place David Whyte speaks from is itself profoundly impactful. At the time I ended up deciding to buy this product I had greatly lamented Amazon not selling David Whyte's "poetry of self-compassion" as I had adored that tape. Although I still regret not having yet been able to find it on CD as it is even more powerful yet, I am so glad that it ended up pushing me into giving this product a try as both are invaluable and well worth owning and repeatedly listening to over the years as special treats that get ever better over time.

David Whyte is the author and poet of the soul, of the deep searching place within and of the wondering being. He refers with such modesty to the incredible work of others, and for that you get to know of poets and poems that you weren't familiar with before or at least did not recognize them untill seeing them in light of what he refers to.Like a true teacher, he helps you to dare to do what you already had within you. Like a genuine guide, he leads you to the realms you had unconsciously and conveniently forgotten or overlooked.David Whyte's writings are very deep and beautiful. But,when he speaks his expressions, his words could be more touching if he did not repeat himself over and over.Somethings get imprinted in your mind (not heart) forever because you've heard them repeatedly but memorizing is different from feeling. It is like someone holding a flower in front of you and insisting upon your looking at it, it is like each time you turn your face away, they bring you back to the flower(over and over). Yes, you'd remember the flower, its color, dimensions, fragrance and so on. But maybe it is when you are just passing by the flower and you intuitively/unknowingly turn around to look back and see the flower again because you wanted to because something touched you , is the moment that you are naturally receptive to the flower.Of course it matters how someone speaks, what words s/he uses. how their tone of voice is, how and when they emphasize on a word, how they flow as they speak and how sincere they are. David Whyte is excellent on all the above. If only he would give space to his listeners to absorb what he just read/said at their own pace. Words touch different people in different ways. All that said, this audiotape is very rich. It fills your backpack with amazement and inspiration on your personal journey through the Great Unknown.

The perceptive and soul-wise ability Mr. Whyte has comes through brilliantly in this CD. I've given many copies away to friends. As we enter maturity, Mr. Whyte addresses a lot of subtle vicissitudes that arise in our unconscious, giving shape and form to the questions we now need to be asking ourselves as we enter the transition. His overall theme, of "A Beautiful Mind", drives this work, he emphasizes life as a work of art, and how that outer expressiong will change at different times as we grow. Living comfortably with the UnKnown is a deep lesson, a practice, a commitment; "Midlife" is a solid road map on uncovering and discovering the great wealth of landscape within.

As awkward as it might be to consider oneself at mid-life, it is a genuine relief to have such a clear and open-hearted guide such as David Whyte help make sense of it all. This CD is profound and inspiring. I could listen to Mr. Whyte's voice all day long. He draws on not only poetry (his own and that of others), but on basic life observations and recollections. The only caution I'll give is that some material seems to be lifted directly from another of his CDs, entitled "Clear Mind: Wild Heart". It's possible that it's just the same words and themes...I haven't done a side-by-side comparison. The duplication is a bit disconcerting, but has more to do with the publisher than the author. Anyway, David Whyte's talents are amazing, and this material is one that I'll listen to again and again. Best wishes,

Landscape, climate, age and experience all form part of the poem that is our life. Our place in the schema of life celebratedListening to this was a healing retreatBeautiful

This CD is one that you will want to listen to over and over again, and with friends. It is not just for people in midlife, it is for anyone in life. Get it and you will learn what life is all about and how to live it.

The CD is read well by David Whyte............not too dramatic but he does make it interesting. Quotes other writers which is nice. Good listen and gives you lots to think about. It's interesting and glad I purchased it.

The Roll-Away PumpkinChildren's colorful book about autumn things. Words scroll up and down as the pages turn with fun things the family does during fall weather. The come across a lot of different people as the pumpkin rolls down the street.

A giant pumpkin rolling out of control, it takes a village to stop it! In this fun little rhyming book, we follow a girl chasing her pumpkin in a desperate attempt to stop it.The illustrations are gorgeous and capture the mood of the book with perfection while the writing brings the reader into the story in a fun way that is sure to keep the youngsters engaged in the story. The only *possibly* questionable content is that one of the lines in the book refers to a "plump lady" and she is indeed, illustrated very plump. And though I don't wish to be that reviewer that finds something to get offended about in every book, however I know from interacting with different children, that some kids who may struggle with obesity can be very sensitive to that and this may trigger certain emotions. But despite the last said, I think the The Roll-Away Pumpkin is a cute book and can be enjoyed by both girls and boys to get into the Autumn mood, I give it 4 out of 5 stars! This review was originally published on Literature Approved [...]

I bought the Kindle version, which works great on my Samsung phone.Very cute short story about a pumpkin that rolls through town, through a parade, and ends up in a big pot! Really cute for kids anywhere from toddler to elementary school aged. Cute illustrations are modern, whimsical, and bright, bound to inspire any child but with classic touches that adults will enjoy. Very lively pictures on each page offer a lot to look at and notice, which keeps kids looking at the page and wanting to open the book over and over.My daughter enjoys it and it makes a great seasonal story for fall and winter reading.

It's a windy day and Marla panics as her giant pumpkin rolls away. She doesn't know how to stop it so she does the next best thing: she chases it all around town alerting the townfolk. Will she save her pumpkin before it crashes or is all lost for dear, sweet Marla? Such a delightful story that is sure to be a bestseller. All ages (including us old adults) will find this story charming. The illustrations are gorgeous and very colorful. Highly recommend! My Rating: 5+ stars

gorgeously illustrated book! a pleasure to go through. In its simplicity, it is brilliant! The story line is very simple indeed as critics say,but to me it says that a 5 year old won't find much in it. though there is a simple message that can be taken out about transformation, purpose or being of service:o) I think it would go for very young children that are just being introduced into story reading, 2- 3 year olds. I can see how it would be a joy to play with little ones along the story asking questions about characters, counting stuff of different pages etc

Beautiful and creative illustrations are the heart and soul of this book. Simple plot consists of a little girl chasing her giant pumpkin, which has managed to roll away from her. Repetitive language and highlighted key words make the text appealing to preschoolers. While the story is not particularly creative, the child is introduced to nostalgic characters like the butcher, baker and the milkman. I do like the Marla's final solution to her problem at the end of the tale. Also available in paperback for those who want to savor the images over and over.

Children love to be able to share in a story that have lines that repeat. This fun story about a run-away pumpkin and the people who take up the chase will remind children of another favorite tale, The Gingerbread Man. The pictures capture the action as the listeners can hardly wait for the page to be turned.

This is an adorable children's story! I read it to my twins, who are 3 years old, and they loved it. It's basically about a little girl chasing a 'run away' pumpkin, and all of the people who join in to help her catch it! It has a cute ending, where everything turns out perfectly, and the townspeople are happy. My boys absolutely adore books, and they love anything to do with Halloween, so the combination in this book was perfect! I definitely recommend it for a great fall read for little kids!

When a pumpkin escapes, it takes the whole village to catch it. The storyline is fresh and worth reading again and again, especially whenever a child asks for a story. It's a good one for children to memorize as it's read. The downside for grownups: Because this is for younger children, it's too short.

The collection of photos included in this beautiful book are stunning, and so fascinating to look at all together. Any Streisand fanatic would appreciate this collection

THIS is a stunning book; anyway you look at it. It is huge though... made for a coffee table, more than a bookshelf, or bedside.

Amazing photos!!! Best part was the recollections of the photographers on the subject. Love that she is portrayed as professional, talented with a clear understanding of what works best for her and the project she is involved in.

Stunning beautifully designed coffee table sized book is a must have for any Streisand aficionado. Gorgeous never before seen photos are in abundance in this book. The behind the scene s recollections of the photographers are also an added bonus.

I was hoping for more never before seens and some intimate (not like that) pictures but overall this book is simply stunning!! She was such a beautiful young lady. This is a very large book and pretty heavy.. so hope your coffee table is sturdy!

A gorgeous big book!!! I have waited a long time for this beautiful book and almost didn't buy it because of the size and the cost, but I am so happy I have it! Some of the most glorious shots of Ms Streisand that I have ever seen! There are many shots new to me and some old, but so worth having in such a large size! This is really worth every penny and it makes for a fabulous coffee table book! This is an absolute must for every Barbra fan!!!

Amazing new large sized coffee table book with pictures of an early Barbra Streisand.Lots of never before seen photos. My only gripe is the print is tiny, and hard to read.

Great but the choice of illustration doesnt give a great feel of ramadan.. where is the moment the actually sit all together and eat? Where is the inage of all of them praying taraweeh, not the father running to catch it! ( the prophet prohibts running to catch prayer, check the hadith). Where is an inage of eid after the last day of ramadan? Why again negatives in hassan annoying Aneesa?!

This book follows two little kids as they learn about Ramadan during the holy month. My kids (ages 7 and almost 4) absolutely loved it, esp the younger one.

My daughter absolutely *LOVED* "Hassan and Aneesa go the the Masjid", so we got this one, and the kids enjoyed it! A great addition to our Islamic home library.

My daughter loves this book !! Makes me read it everyday. JazakAllahu Khairan to the author.

My children love this book. I replace the characters names with the names of my son and daughter. The illustrations are beautiful. Explains Ramadan in a way children can easily understand. Good to have reading material where my children can relate to culturally, ( names, dress, religion, etc). Will purchase more from this series.

Sweet book! Love how my daughter can relate to it so much!

Great gift for my grandson at Ramadan! Helps him to understand.

My children love it!

Wow... This book has so much in it; a love triangle, betrayal and a wicked parent - yes you read that right! PARENT!!! Not Step-parent! Doesn't that make it so much worse?…Fair is the Rose takes place during the 18th century in Scotland. The author, Liz Curtis Higgs continues the story she began with her book Thorn in my Heart - it's not necessary to read this first book though to understand this one, but OMG!!! It is so good!!! I really recommend it just because I think you'll really enjoy it.Back to explaining Fair is the Rose... the book centers on two sisters; Leana and Rose, their cousin Jamie and the sisters' father Lachlan McBride. You'll find that this story (along with book 1 of the series) Higgs is taking the Biblical story Jacob, Esau, Lea and Rachel and telling it from a perspective of only a couple of hundred years ago (rather than thousands) so we can better relate to how the people were feeling. I mean, seriously, there were chapters upon chapters where my heart was breaking for Leana. I was really able to gain a deeper understanding for what Rachel and especially Leah went through so many hundreds of years ago.Higgs was also able to show how generous and loving a person can be. No matter what was thrown at that girl, Leana looked toward the Lord and showed love and thoughtfulness toward everyone - even when they didn't deserve it!!!! I mean seriously!!! I think we all could learn a lesson from her!The book really showed how generous and loving a person can be (Leana) and also how selfish and thoughtless someone can be (Rose). It's a wonderful book and I really do recommend it. Be ready to cry throughout it because it is a tear-jerker. Personally I would get the first book of the series first, Thorn in My Heart, but it isn't necessary.

We return to 18th century Scotland to the thorny love triangle that is Jamie, Leana, and Rose. Desperately determined to have Jamie to herself despite his marriage for Leana, Rose employs every charm in her employ to bring his heart towards her own once more. She ignores her conscience thinking all is fair in love, never dreaming of the tragic consequences. Her sister, Leana, patient and full of faith in Jamie and God, never sees what the future has in store. But she dotes on Ian, hoping that she will one day be as happy as she once was.Jamie has every intention of returning to Glentrool to claim his stolen birthright. But again, things do not go well for him and his plans, and Lachlan delays him at every turn. Which McBride sister will be his bride upon his return? And will he be well received, or will Evan's jealousy that has taken root over two years finally yield it's bitter fruit? The saga continues in this breathtaking second installment of Higg's Scottish series. While I couldn't help but love each and every character development in this story, it broke my heart to read line after line of terrible, yet necessary details. I knew things had to happen, but that didn't make it any easier. There are moments of joy, pain, happiness, dread, peace, passion, faithfulness, heartache, and redemption, in every chapter. I reveled in every moment in all their lives, and I despaired with them when it seemed all was lost. While this book is very important to the story and a pivotal book in the series, it was hard to not get emotionally involved the more I read on. If you're not a fan of this author, by the time you get to this book in the Scottish saga you will be involved as you're going to get. Love, love, love this book and series. Highly recommended.

This series by Liz Curtis Higgs takes the biblical account of Jacob, Leah, and Rachel and fictionalizes it into a Scottish tale in the 1700's. After getting past the Scottish brogue in the first novel, these books are a fascinating read. The author weaves the story and the characters well and stays true to biblical events, while changing them just enough to fit into her fictional story. Main characters become heroes/heroines and then become vilians just as quickly.I've always loved fictional stories based on biblical stories because it allows one to imagine what the person really went through. The biblical accounts are often short and emotions are often looked over while we read the events. A series like this truly puts those emotions and events into a real life situation, although it is a real life situation in the 1700's.Highly recommended for those who love historical fiction.

As usual, what I have read here is very good. This one had me really guessing the outcome. I had not realized it was the second in a series, so now I have the read the third one, but that is ok. I doubt I will be disappointed. Very good writing, very good story line and most of all, I love the way Christ is glorified throughout the whole thing.

This book follows A Thorn In My Heart which I loved and quickly ordered the next two in the series. There is no way that the plot can be called predictable and it has such character since it is written around the 18th century in Scotland. If you enjoy Higgs writing or even Irish type stories, then you will love this book. The first book leaves you amazed at the events but this book is not boring and a sudden turn of events keeps the reader guessing and entranced. I give it 5 stars because I couldn't put the first book down once I got going and couldn't wait to buy the second two.

Loved the setting, the history, but some of the plot may have been correct with the times. Nevertheless, the suffering wen on too, too long.

The book was wonderful. I was amazed how the sisters could love each other so much in spite of the fact that both of them were in love with the same man, and each one of them wanted to have his heart. The marvelous details again brought you right to the scenes as you would be there experiencing everything through your body. I could feel the mist in the air and all sensations that surroundings would bring. The story was well written!

This book is so good, I could scarcely put it down, there are parts that are a real tear jerker, so keep your tissues handy.

Look Me in the Eye: My Life with Asperger's, by John Elder Robison

From Publishers Weekly

Starred Review. Robison's thoughtful and thoroughly memorable account of living with Asperger's syndrome is assured of media attention (and sales) due in part to his brother Augusten Burroughs's brief but fascinating description of Robison in Running with Scissors. But Robison's story is much more fully detailed in this moving memoir, beginning with his painful childhood, his abusive alcoholic father and his mentally disturbed mother. Robison describes how from nursery school on he could not communicate effectively with others, something his brain is not wired to do, since kids with Asperger's don't recognize common social cues and body language or facial expressions. Failing in junior high, Robison was encouraged by some audiovisual teachers to fix their broken equipment, and he discovered a more comfortable world of machines and circuits, of muted colors, soft light, and mechanical perfection. This led to jobs (and many hilarious events) in worlds where strange behavior is seen as normal: developing intricate rocket-shooting guitars for the rock band Kiss and computerized toys for the Milton Bradley company. Finally, at age 40, while Robison was running a successful business repairing high-end cars, a therapist correctly diagnosed him as having Asperger's. In the end, Robison succeeds in his goal of helping those who are struggling to grow up or live with Asperger's to see how it is not a disease but a way of being that needs no cure except understanding and encouragement from others. *Starred Review* If one looked at only Robison's impish sense of humor (he once ordered a blow-up sex doll to be delivered to his junior-high-school teacher—at school), or his success as a classic-car restorer, it might be impossible to believe he has the high-functioning form of autism spectrum disorder called Asperger's syndrome. Clues abound, however, in his account of a youth encompassing serious inability to make and keep friends; early genius at pyrotechnics, electronics, and math; and pet names such as Poodle for his dog and Snort and Varmint for his baby brother. Much later, he calls his wife Unit Two. It is easy to recognize these telltale traits today, but Robison went undiagnosed until he was 40. In the 1960s, he was variously labeled lazy, weird, and, worse, sociopathic. Consequently, his childhood memories too often read like a kid's worst nightmares. Not only did his parents fail to understand the root of his socialization problems but they were also virtually as dysfunctional as the pair Augusten Burroughs portrays in Running with Scissors (2002). 'Nough said? Not nearly. Robison's memoir is must reading for its unblinking (as only an Aspergian can) glimpse into the life of a person who had to wait decades for the medical community to catch up with him. Chavez, Donna

I enjoyed this book. Robison had difficulty all of his life relating to people, emotions, social situations. He was incredibly gifted in understanding electronics and math, but normal conversations baffled him. It wasn't until he was 40 yrs old that he was diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome - a form of autism. In this memoir he recounts his awkward childhood, few friends, the butt of jokes, being bullied. Even though he tested far above his schoolmates in intelligence, he dropped out of school before graduating. His home life was chaos, with an alcoholic father and a mother with mental issues. His expertise in electronics led to small jobs fixing amplifiers for local rock bands, and finally as the electronics special-effects guy for the band KISS. He entered the corporate world helping design inter-active games and early video games, but finally left when he was promoted to management and didn't like it (managing people was difficult, he was not able to use his hands and expertise, and the rat-race stress was too much). He went back to mechanics and opened a luxury car repair business. The parts of the memoir where he discusses his feelings and frustrations about relationships, and the Asperger's-related issues, are very good. But (as other reviewers have noted) there is way too much technical stuff about retrofitting fire-breathing guitars and designing games. Overall, a good memoir, if you can kind of scan over the super-techie parts.

John Elder, you are awesome for what you have overcome! We have a seven year old (also named John) who was diagnosed a few months ago. Trouble in school, self hate and other things are big things already. This memoir opened my eyes to an understanding of what we are dealing with on a daily basis; his anxiety; his lack of understanding at others expressions in speech, and body language; his frustration with other people not understanding his point the first time (He hates explaining things to "stupid" people). THANK YOU for sharing your story, it is amazing to see the hope of a bright future, the perseverance of someone who kept on trying new things and learned to work through difficulties and find a measure of satisfaction with life in spite of emotional and social adversity. People who read this book need to be sure and read the Preface and Prologue as they are an essential part of the book, as well. I read cover to cover with a pencil, marked it up with points to review and then went back and read the entire thing again.

My grandson was recently diagnosed as autistic. Being one of his caregivers for the last 4 years, I had not seen a difference in his actions and mine as a child or some even now. After scoring high in an Autism Spectrum Quotient test online, I spoke to my therapist. He suggested I read this book. After reading, pieces of my childhood started to fall into place and questions unanswered for the past 50 years began to make sense. This is a good read for anyone who suspects they may be on the spectrum, knows someone on the spectrum, or just wants to know more about autism.

I have a young son who is 4 years old. He is atypical but very subtle when you meet him. Most people think his "traits" (sensitivity to sound, late potty train, echoing (repetitions of words), delay lack of communication flapping of arms when excited, lack of play with others) will be outgrown eventually. However, highly intelligent recognize letters and counts to 200 at age 2, reads, writes, spells, memorize downloadable from videos at age 2 1/2 years. As with motherly instincts, I insisted to the pediatrician that I need to see specialists which with persistency eventually happened. So with his second follow up in a few weeks with a child's developmental specialists, I decided to do some research by reading and watching videos of Aspergers. I don't know what the results will be with my son but at least I can be more knowledgeable about this topic. This gives you understanding of how Aspergerians deal with social aspects, why they do what they do and that despite this condition (NOT a disease), they can still have a family, career....a fulfilling life. The only part that I didn't really care for is the details of his interests (experiments, pyrotechnics, trains). It was a bit boring to me but after reading this book, you will understand why. Overall, I think families should look into this book as a way to understand the perception of this way of life.

I read this book when it was new before the advent of Amazon into my life. I love this book--the way that it is written and the impact that it had on me as a person. I did not know about Asperger. Now I take the time to realize that not everyone comes to me will have everything I thought that a human would have. I realize we all have differences--sometimes you can notice these as Asperger's. It made me realize I have no concept about what life has given the other person so now I do not judge. I just listen.

This book is funny, insightful and eye opening. It opens up a window into the life of someone who has Asperger's Syndrome. John Robinson shares his story in a no nonsense way, it's totally honest and makes no excuses. It was by far one of the easiest books for me to read. It flowed and kept my attention throughout, from beginning to end. It was sweet in a lot of ways and a bit shocking in others, but I was able to get a real sense of how many children and adults live their daily lives who are on the spectrum. John Robinson was really likable and its hard to believe he wasn't able to make many friends as you really can see his personality shine through. I loved seeing the interactions with his brother and how it changed over the years. If you have a child on the spectrum, know of a child on the spectrum, or even if you don't this is a great afternoon read. I received this book for free in return for my honest opinion, no compensation was received.

Mexican Days: Journeys into the Heart of Mexico, by Tony Cohan

From Publishers Weekly

Novelist and memoirist Cohan takes on a travel magazine assignment to make "some trips around Mexico... see how the puzzle of old and new fit together [and] write about it." Traveling south from his San Miguel home, he passes through Vera Cruz, Oaxaca and Chiapas into the Yucatán. Readers familiar with the path may enjoy traveling with him; others will long for a minimal map, an organizing principle and some photographs. As Cohan drifts through Mexico, history (e.g., the founding of Tlacotalpan sometime between A.D. 900 and 1200) and contemporary events (e.g., the barricading of mountain roads by Zapatista insurgents) are revealed. Chats with taxistas and shopkeepers, visits with friends and artists, remarks about his own work and casual references to the famous among Mexico's tourist, exile and expatriate population dot the pages (John Huston gets four pages). Cohan's description of the book as "the Mexican postcard I'm always writing home" is accurate; but postcards work best for readers who can fill in the blanks with their own sense of where the writer is coming from. Perhaps readers of Cohan's previous, well-received account (On Mexican Time: A New Life in San Miguel) will be able to do so. Cohan updates and expands his portrait of life in Mexico from his previous books. This journey commences in San Miguel de Allende, where Cohan finds his beloved town overrun with overbearing Hollywood movie stars filming an action picture. Their intense hypertechnological activity overshadows the town's unique and vital culture, reflecting in its own way the continuing disruption of civilization by predatory northern neighbors. In further contrast to what he witnesses in San Miguel, Cohan encounters native Mexican filmmakers intent on recording genuine Mexican culture, not simply using the land as a stage set. He also demonstrates an encyclopedic knowledge of the long history of Hollywood filmmaking in Mexico. As Cohan travels from Guanajuato to Mexico City, to Oaxaca, and to the Yucatan, the sights and the people he encounters reflect intractable problems left over from repeated disastrous collisions with first Spanish and then U.S. forces. Cohan accurately and vividly describes the riotous extremes of politics, of geography, of wealth, of smells, and of colors that make up today's Mexico. Mexican Days is author Tony Cohan’s sequel to his adventurous foray into living in Mexico, in San Miguel de Allende. While this latest intriguing account engages and transports the reader to a new world on its own, the experience is more meaningful after first seeing the author’s life as it unfolds in On Mexican Time. This second volume documents how much can happen in a six-year span and it’s a fascinating look at the transformation of a long popular destination, San Miguel, into something far more. Cohan reflects on how his former refuge had become something of a sensation with a surge in gentrifying real estate developments, upscale shops, and in departing mainstays of the town.Mexican Days opens with the author’s return to San Miguel, but then ventures afield throughout the “heart” of the country. But something more enters as a subtext. Cohan is more reflective about changes in his life, especially the distancing that has developed with his artist and collaborator wife, Masako Takahashi. He also recognized restlessness in himself, a desire to be “in motion.” An assignment to write about what’s new and exciting in Mexico (and what might appeal to Americans scared of travel further afield after the horrendous shock of 9/11).Cohan ventures into the more mysterious Sierra Gorda and the “scrambled, unpretty town” of Xilitla. He returns to a hard-edge Mexico City followed by stops in Oaxaca City and Chiapas, and especially to Xalapa. During his travels he muses about his wanderlust, his “purposeful travel.” The reader is privileged to witness this personal quest. I await the next account of Cohan’s travels.Michael Helquist, author, MARIE EQUI: Radical Politics and Outlaw Passions

We were introduced to Tony Cohan more than a year ago as we were planning our first visit to San Miguel de Allende, MX. I finished this book more than a month ago and will be leaving for our second trip to San Miguel in 3 weeks. This is not your usual travelogue but a peek at the unexpected in many regions of Mexico. I loved it.

Don't not buy this book as a travel guide. This is a book about the "state of mind" of Mexico and those drawn to it as much as it describes unique places in the country. The majority of American's knowledge and stereotyping of Mexico are nowhere near the charm, culture and people of Mexico when you meet them in their environment.I first read Tony Cohan's "A New Life in San Miguel" where he moved in the mid 80s when living in Mexico in the devalued peso era was not very popular. Cohan described the charm of San Miguel to perfection. This book revisits San Miguel during the filming of a movie with Salma Hayek and Antonio Banderas and relevant disruption this causes to his formerly quiet little town. In addition, his town is now overrun with American touristas, who he quietly dislikes and he also blames for runaway housing prices which helps to destroy his quiet little town's character. An invitation to write an article of unique places to visit in Mexico leads to this book which is not a tourist guide but rather a description of these unique little towns and the effect on the soul of this expatriate American. To further this introspective traveling review, Cohan now goes through the year with minimal time seeing his wife Mosaka, an accomplished author and photographer in her own right who prepares books on Mexican Tile and Mexican color in design and architecture. Thus begins a yearly journey into the soul of Mexico and Tony Cohan.Cohan visits many towns like Guanajuato, Xilitla, Jalpan, Oaxaca City, Xalapa, Tlacotalpan, Palenque, and Merida. All have their unique charm and geography. Many of these towns he compares to San Miguel twenty years ago before the arrival of the tourists. Some of my favorite stories are of the mountain villages with constant drizzle or chipichipi on the East Coast near the Caribbean Ocean and also the "son jarocho" music festival where Cohan studies the whole history of the music dating back to the early 1900s. But my two favorite stories are of Katanchel in the Yucatan jungle and Palenque. Katanchel is described as an enchanting place which a subsequent tragedy brings into perspective. Palenque is the site of a documentary filming of a famous Mayan ruin. Cohan weaves a great story of lovers, honeymooners, hippies and other members of society who check out into the jungle on their own quest. This is an excellent internal perspective that Cohan shares with his readers. I strongly recommend that you read "A New Life in San Miguel" first and then the continuation of the journey in this book. There are many parts of this book to discuss but would be giving up the story. In many respects Cohan seems to be enjoying his life but struggling through his personal relationships and his love of Mexico which he doesn't want to see change.

Tony Cohan has written better books. I enjoyed (On Mexican Time - A New Life in San Miguel) because I spent a more than a dozen years there on and off since 1975, and knew most if not all the characters he mentioned. But this book just wasn't as sound, as accurate for want of a better word, than On Mexican Time. Parts of it were okay, but as much as you like Tlacotalpan (a beautiful little town south of the port of Veracruz) it is NOT on the Caribbean! I lived in Veracruz for 10 years and am pretty familiar with the state. It was obvious to me Mr. Cohan is much more familiar with Guanajuato.

I liked certain parts of the book more than others.. Based on where he was traveling the excitement and readability was vastly different from one town to another. Very good at making you feel like you are there with him.
