I don't read or watch a lot of shoujo series. I decided to pick this series up on a whim to see what all the fuss was about. And I was surprised to find a decently funny spin on the harem genre.This story begins with Serinuma, an unremarkable high school girl with a passion for anime and boy-boy relationships. Ordinarily, boys wouldn't notice her. But when her favorite anime character dies, she becomes a wreck for a week and loses about 30 pounds. Suddenly, she's attractive enough to have four guys after her, even though she'd prefer to just bask in the glow of her fantasies.You don't get a lot of characters like this in manga, and the writer provides just enough development to make them likeable. However, I do worry about this series future, as it would be easy to string this out too long and make everyone as annoying as your usual harem protagonist.

That is an issue that’s not okay to handle badly, or too blasé like Let’s Dance a Waltz did. But in this book, it took a more comedic route, and it wasn’t ignored. Which, at least for me, made it okay (or at least standable).Especially since, while the boys weren’t flirting with her when she was bigger, at least she wasn’t being bullied over it. It was just part of who she was then. No big deal. Much like her otaku side, it’s just part of her.As soon as Serinuma gets smaller waisted, three boys in particular start clinging to her, plus one who’s just her friend. She doesn’t know how to handle it, especially since she just wants them to fall in love with each other, not her. But she agrees to go on a date with them all at once. Then some of them agree to help her practice soccer and study.I like how open Serinuma is. She doesn’t hide her otaku side, even when told she should. She doesn’t decide on one of them, she gives them all a shot when she can’t decide. When she finds out how out of shape she is, she still keeps practicing like crazy for soccer. She doesn’t hide who she is, and only makes the boys like her even more.I think I’ve already got a favorite, or two, out of the boys, but I’m still not sure who’s going to get closer to her. They’re all fighting pretty hard at this point. And I like the humor, the heroine, and the characterization so far. *Kiss Him, Not Me!* is a hilarious manga by a mangaka pen named Junko. Known more for her BL (boy's love) manga, this is the first major foray into a less niche and more main-stream genre/demographic. The story is a *shojo* "reverse-harem" (a group of guys going for a girl while harem series are the opposite) and slice-of-life story about a girl named Serinuma Kae.Kae is a chubby and cheerful *otaku* who is a major *fujoshi* or fan of stories about romantic boy on boy pairings. One day her favorite anime character dies in the story and she suddenly falls into a state of deep depression where she refuses to eat or leave her room for a week. When forced out of bed by her brother, she is suddenly a petite and pretty girl who guys are falling all over themselves to date.Of course, she is both flattered by this attention and frustrated, cause she is at first trying to keep her otaku side a secret and trying to enjoy the attention. In particular, the otaku stuff is not always looked at nicely in Japan, especially fujoshi. It ends up being subverted when the guys don't care, but oh well. However, this all is hilariously difficult for Kae when she keeps mentally pairing the boys up with each other due to interpreting the most mundane things in a unique manner.Yes, the premise is ridiculous, but it is fun and cute. Even though some of the guys are less endearing than others, they still act shy around Kae and her uncertainty about how to act in turn can be quite sweet. Also, they accept her for who she is. Granted, for some it's because she's "hot" now, but for some it is accepting her for real and that is really something I like seeing.The situations are drawn less "sexualized" and more "cute ", though for BL fans (or so I have read statements online that point this out) there are shout-outs amidst the cuteness to thus appeal to folks of more than one demographic.The art is very visually pleasing and fun to see and contributes greatly to the story. In fact, I'd say this is some of the better art I've seen. It captures the comedy and seriousness both of various scenes, quite well.There does seem to be some sort of negative idea at first that if you are pretty you are "better" or that "thin is better" and prettier than not, and other troubling cultural prejudices in Japan, but I hear the author subverts this later on to an extent, which I look forward to seeing.I have my idea of who she should be with eventually, as I think that certain folks, or one in particular, is more genuine in love for her. There is a female member of the harem to debut soon, I've read, which should make things interesting.Of course, there is a final issue to deal with, and that is the issue of her sudden, and *incredibly* unrealistic hotness/weight loss. In reality, starving yourself for a week will *hurt* you and when you lose massive weight you have stretch marks, and saggy skin and what not. Not a perfect, "hot" body. Don't copy this or you will have eating disorders and other health problems. Also, this is kinda irritating to have the negative "thin is better" idea at first, but as I said, it subverts it in the end, and it is just a zany way to introduce the plot.If one can't handle the beginning, that is fine. Nothing to be ashamed of there and I praise you for knowing what you can handle. I myself stay away from some tales due to issues with different stuff mentioned or what not. If you can hold your nose through the very beginning, you might find a sweet story that you like, one that actually subverts the negative stereotypes of overweight folks and otaku in Japan, and overweight folks elsewhere.Rating: 4.5/5 Stars. (Half a point for the negative messaging, though again I hear that such will get better and be subverted later on.)

First off, I love the story and I am impatiently awaiting the next in the series. The story gets 5 stars with the introduction up of a new suitor, one more villainous than our team has faced before. Unfortunately just like with a prior reviewer, I too had issues with the weak binding of the book. This book simply does not hold up. I've had several pages have already separated from the spine completely. I've had no issues with my prior books in this series, so I don't know if this is a result of some one-time manufacturing flaw or if they publisher trying cheaper material. I can only hope this weak binding is a fluke.

ordered this vol and was super excited for it but when it got here it was in terrible packaging and received water damage sometime along the way, and not only that but some idiot somewhere in this world thought it would be a good idea to put a security tag in the middle of one of the pages on this manga!!?? i mean really...who dose something like that??? im not at all happy with this and sending it back and hopefully the next one will be better.

If you love high school romance and comedy, then this manga is for you! I was absolutely hooked from reading just the first volume. Would highly reccomend this manga.

We are homeschoolers, and even when we aren't teaching from this book, our kid likes to read it on her own.

I read a lot of the reviews on this book - especially the negative reviews - and had to write my own because I think there are many ways to approach this book series.This is our first year homeschooling our 4th grade daughter and we met and grilled many of the homeschool mothers in our area on their system of teaching. One of them recommended the Wise/Bauer book "The Well-Trained Mind" which seemed to be a very good fit for both my teaching style and our daughter's learning style. "The Well-Trained Mind" recommends, of course, this series of books for teaching history. But what a lot of people are missing, I think, is that Volume 1 is meant for 1st grade, Volume 2 for 2nd grade, etc. These 4 volumes are also meant to be the first of 3 levels of teaching history as the child goes through his/her 12 years of education. In other words, these four volumes are laying the groundwork for what's to come. It's not a be-all end-all history course.The reason my approach is different is because I'm using this series of books to catch my daughter up to where a well-educated child should be by the 4th grade. Up through to the end of 3rd grade in the public school system, the only exposure she'd had to history is to the timespan just before and just after the American revolutionary war. So we had a lot of ground to cover. But I didn't want it to turn into a grind for her, so I took the authors' intentions to heart and I'm using this series to form a groundwork for a basic understanding of history.So what I'm doing is covering all four volumes in 1 year. That works out to a little over 2 months per volume or 4 chapters (for Volume 1) per week. I skipped the activity book but did buy the workbook with the quizzes. We've read to our daughter since she was a baby and she still loves to be read to, so for the 1-hour class (which I hold twice a week) I read 2 chapters to her, discussing what we're reading as I go along. She loves it and the book is easy to read from. Before class starts, I give her 2 quizzes from the 2 chapters read in the previous class. She gets about as many questions right as I would and it's just to help reinforce what I've read to her.So all the complaints about inaccuracies in the book and the author's religious slant (which I didn't find and I was looking for), they don't matter. What really matters is that my daughter enjoys learning about history (it's her favorite class) and she's building a foundation that can be built on in later years.In addition to this series and its workbooks, I also picked up "The Kingfisher History Encyclopedia." Once a week I give her homework to read assigned pages from this book to reinforce or, perhaps, to give a different point of view on what she's just learned.All history books will turn up people who will disagree with the content, will find inaccuracies in the material, or won't agree with the author's point of view. But, guess what? It doesn't matter. Your child is still young and you are filling in a background in history that his/her public school peers will never have.

Should be titled "The Story of The World: According to a Highly Selective Reading of the King James Bible: Volume 1."If you are a secular homeschooler or even a non fundamentalist christian, be warned that this "world" history book begins 7000 years ago with the "earliest people/first nomads". It imply's that farming and agriculture began some unspecified time later. Archeologists believe that agriculure began about 12,000 years ago, making all previous (and some concurrent) people hunter gatherers.

This is an amazing audio CD. I will be ordering all 4 volumes. I enjoy listening to it, and so does my 4 year old and 8 year old. I bought the companion activity book which also makes it come alive. You get a map with each chapter so your kids can see, and then hear a great narrative about where/what they are learning. Only buy 1 activity book for the family though- it has lesson plans/reccomendations for half the book, and the other half is activities/maps/hand out papers that you can pick and choose to accompany the chapter you listen to that day. You can copy multiples/handouts for your family to use per the copyright allowances listed in the book.Each chapter/track is 8-10 minutes so far, the narrator is interesting and we really enjoy history!

A little heavier on Bible stories than I'd prefer but they aren't presented as absolute fact. As a secular homeschool family we are still able to use this as our history spine without issue.

My five-year-old doesn't really enjoy fiction, so this was our bedtime story for about a month. It is easy to read aloud, and my five-year-old begged for the next in the series. I like how there are myths intertwined with the history as I think it makes it more interesting. I have a master's degree, but I don't have much of a history background, so I don't know about the accuracy of the history. The author has a definite viewpoint, but I think that makes it more interesting than a textbook. I'm learning so much and I really look forward to reading this book every night.

I wouldn't call this an entirely accurate encyclopedic approach to history but rather a collection of stories and lore that make history come to life and fun to read. It's great for getting your child interested in various stages of history that you can then delve deaper into as you wish. It has kept my sons attention even though he doesn't always enjoy reading and helped peak his interest in various topics and got him asking questions, so for that alone it's worth buying because that is what any good book should do, draw you in and compel you to learn more.

This book is eye-opening. But it is not nearly as accessible to the average person as the Amazon ad implies. Chapter 3 (the longest) is a bear. I read it twice, very slowly, and all of its 'foot-notes' in the back of the book to make sure that I understood as well as I could everything that the author packed into it. There are only 4 chapters. And there are 4 authors of this book. Three chapters have just one author, each different from the other two one-author chapters.It answers the question: Does a large government, usually because of a large "welfare state" of social transfer spending, reduce economic growth? The authors say no! One of the authors presents his research along with other work, and he deconstructs and points out the experimental flaws in contradicting studies that seem to imply otherwise.What I don't understand is why no economists (or anybody else with expertise) have reviewed this book here on Amazon. (And there are few reviews anywhere on the internet.) There is a video (almost 2 hrs) of a panel discussion with the authors, two other panelists (with some credentials), and a moderator on the Economic Policy Institute website. There is a NYT book review (Eduardo Porter, 8/02/16 ) on the NYTimes-dot-com website. There is a Forbes article that appears to take issue with Porter's NYT review on the Forbes-dot-com website. There is a podcast interview with Lane Kenworthy, one of the authors, about this book (and probably other stuff) on the Politics Guys-dot-com website. I haven't yet read or listened to all the articles, audios, and video listed above. I'd just do a google search to find these. (Per the Amazon guidelines no review may include URLs unless they refer to other webpages on the Amazon website.)But I still don't know why there are so few reviews anywhere about this specific book. A lot of the other google hits just seem to mention this book in passing. These authors are relatively well-known in academia and the 'expertsphere'. This book should have caused a lot of arguments to break out about the proper size of government. This is an important book that refutes many of the the economic arguments against "big government" made by the small government advocates. This book is filled with objective scientific evidence, and if you are a non-expert like me you will be hard-pressed to understand some of that evidence. That's what I want in a review is some objective, non-ideological guidance in evaluating this evidence.I gave this book five stars because it contributes so much evidence to an issue that is very important. This book is about the basic argument between Democrats and Republicans, progressives and conservatives, liberals and libertarians. Is the 'small government' argument just a pretext for deregulation? Is it a pretext to allow the hyper-rich get even richer? Is it a pretext so that the Koch Brothers and other fossil-fuel-funded-family-fortunes can use to avoid making 80% of the proven reserves of the oil, coal, and gas companies stranded assets that can never be used in order to limit global warming? Or does big government really slow down economic growth?These four authors make a powerful argument that a bigger U.S. government would provide many societal benefits plus it might produce slightly faster economic growth, but in any case it very likely won't hurt economic growth. Many of the of the other 19 or so wealthy democracies have larger governments because they have a larger "welfare state" that benefits their citizens greatly. But they do not seem to have paid any long-term price in terms of a lower economic growth (GDP per capita). Some refer to this as the "free lunch paradox, or puzzle". (Some of these countries may have paid a lower growth price for other public policies that have nothing to do with having a large welfare state.I think you have to read this evidence for yourself. (If nothing else you will learn about some big demographic problems that all the wealthy nations will confront in the future and nobody seems to know exactly how to cope with these problems.)And then start asking the experts to weigh-in on this question with more evidence. I think that most of it is accurate, but I apologize in advance if there are mistakes in my understanding of what these authors wrote in this book. And please excuse any grammatical errors.--------------When Ronald Reagan told us that government is the problem, most of us assumed he meant that it's size was hurting business, workers, and the economy. In "How big should our government be?" by Jon Bakija (Williams College), Lane Kenworthy (U. of C. San Diego), Peter Lindert (U. of C. Davis), and Jeff Madrick (Century Foundation), © 2016, confront this problem and find something different. Mere size is not a problem. So if you want to ground your small government creed in economics you've got a big problem.According to B,K,L,M especially Bakija, there is no correlation in recent research between the size of government and the rate of GDP growth per person. B,K,L,M show this and other important facts about civic size and the types of civic programs. They write in depth nuts and bolts explanations in 143 pages, 4 chapters, lots of citation notes, and a big bibliography. Jon Bakija will slow down your reading speed considerably when he explains the import of "stationary" versus "non-stationary" variables. But the conclusions they draw are quite clear. They investigate the "free-lunch paradox": How do the larger welfare states provide the benefits they do and still suffer no negative effect on growth? They explain why "total hours worked" is not a reliable measure of the effect of state benefits on incentives to work. They explain why the on-going European growth crisis is not related to the size of their governments, but to other counter-productive policies.No "credible" study shows with confidence that big government (BG) has hindered the rate of GDP growth over the last 100 years, nor in the last 53 years in the rich nations, as of 2013. There are studies that claim to prove that it BG does stifle business growth. But the negative effects that they find are "statistically insignificant" (too small to be trusted). And the authors of those studies tend not to release their data to the public. B,K,L,M (mostly Jon Bakija) go through the trusted BG/growth research and find no large numbers showing a slowing effect on growth. One large study covered 100 years (1913-2013) and 13 rich countries (with a total GDP range from 1/2 (in 1913) to 1/3rd (in 2013) of total world GDP). If anything this study showed a positive, but "statistically insignificant" effect of BG on the rate of GDP growth. But that means one can clearly rule out a negative effect of BG on the rate of GDP growth in this large study with some confidence. The size of government, whether gauged in spending or tax revenue, and the rate of GDP growth seem to be independent of one another.GDP stats don't measure everything. So, the authors list those non-business positive effects that those rich welfare states and their citizens have experienced. They include: 1) more income equality; 2) less poverty (by any measure); 3) longer life expectancy (most likely through universal healthcare systems that are more efficient); 4) less government corruption (counter-intuitively given the larger amounts of money flowing through government agencies); 5) much lower budget deficits (probably because of more efficient tax systems); 6) greater expression of personal happiness (in opinion polls); and 7) more gender equality. The fact that these extra benefits from a larger welfare state come at no measured loss of GDP growth is part of the "free lunch paradox".How could this happen? There is no "free lunch"—or is there? The authors speculate that "the few ways in which large tax-based social transfer programs reduce GDP are balanced by the ways in which they raise GDP". These boil down to 1) universal entitlement is easier and therefore much cheaper to administer (private, for profit insurance programs). 2) Broad tax systems (whether indirect or direct) are easier, more efficient, and therefore cheaper to administer, and they are less disruptive of consumer and business activity choices than narrow taxes (customs, etc). 3) Most of the larger welfare states use broad consumption VAT (which is more efficient to collect and generates more tax revenue per capita), and sin sales taxes (positive effects on human capital, public heath, and limiting disruptive environmental externalities), which conventional and conservative theory economists believe is better (although there is no clear research evidence to confirm that yet). 4) More equal distribution of social spending among the 3 basic age groups (elderly, working age, and the young) due in large part to significantly greater social spending on the later two younger groups than the U.S., and the extra resources from points # 2 and # 3. 4) More efficient healthcare systems due in large part to reduced or no profit expense and no donation collection expenses and point # 1. 5) Better development of mother's human capital (paid parental leave, public day-care with qualified providers, public health spending, and safety net programs for the poor), due in large part to point # 4 and the extra resources from points # 2 and # 3.(The VAT tax seems to be almost self-enforcing. Therefore it might cost even less to operate than our IRS, which itself uses up only 1/2 of one percent of what it collects. Some think that wealth inequality has increased in some European welfare states since moving to the indirect VAT tax, but not nearly as much as in the U.S. which has constrained expansion of spending and dramatically reduced the top rates for direct taxes on income and estate in the past 50 years. And our payroll tax is a flat tax up to a limit. After that limit the rich get an exemption. The payroll tax helps pay for the largest part of the federal budget — Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid. Other federal taxes pay for the discretionary budget items.)///////////////////////////////-----------------

Online resources like Boston University Public health resource is better at explaining the theories than this book. This book uses a lot of words to try and get at the constructs. It just never hits the mark. It fails to explain any principles.The paragraph structure showing evidence-based research and then trails off without explaining how the example relates to the theory construct. In other words, it builds up to a point then never delivers.

Book arrived as described and on time. My rating is for the content of the book itself. I find the format confusing with the excessive use of APA citing, but I do understand the reasoning for doing this. The content is easy to understand, but not very engaging. I find myself struggling to get through each chapter. I had to purchase this book for a class.

This is one of the worst textbooks I've ever seen, largely because of choices made in the formatting and typesetting of the book. The quality of the text is poor to begin with as noted by other reviewers, and the book refers repeatedly to its own prior editions which I clearly don't have access to. It is frequently longwinded in describing what might be made relatively concise and to the point. Unfortunately, whatever substance there is in this book that I might learn from is buried hopelessly in pages that have tiny margins, never use bullet points or lists, and rarely use effective tables or other data visualizations. The choice to cite all authors of referenced theories and studies makes most paragraphs nearly unreadable, and buries salient points in a jumble of parenthetical references.

Bought this textbook for a graduate level class. Very detailed on various topics related to health behavior. Could be written at a different reading level, though. Overall, nice book. Kindle version is easier to read.

If you plan a career in public health, this is the kind of useful and comprehensive textbook that you'll want to keep rather than selling, and refer to it from time to time. It is worth it.

Bought this for a class and was a very helpful complement to the professor's lectures.

I just can’t get into this book which is not good since my class uses it heavily.

Nicely done. My one complaint is that this version shrinks the maps and provides a number of photos of key landmarks. I'd rather have bigger maps and skip the photos altogether. I can find those all over. What I need is large, easily readable maps. The maps are well done, and I'd give it five stars if they filled each page.

Beautiful Visual Atlas.Pro's: I love how in the beginning of every section they provide succinct description of the region, including most common natural disasters and other details.Con's: some photos are too small, some are too large: one half of the photo is on left page, the other half of the photo is on the right page, and the center of the photo is "split". To me it is visually unappealing.

I bought this book as a gift, & have not given it to the receiver. It is sealed well, so I didn't want to open it. It looks like it will is a beautiful book. However, the man I bought it for is elderly, & the book is very heavy. He will have to rest it on a table to read it. I do hope he likes it.

This World Atlas is absolutely and extraordinarily beautiful and graphic. It is truly a piece of art that can be displayed and enjoyed by all.

This is by far the BEST World Atlas currently available. Full of current information, beautifully done with wonderful graphics and images. So much more information than just a World Atlas. Be prepared this book is one heavy beast. Not your ordinary lap top book. You'll be reviewing it while it's resting on a table or foot rest not your lap! If you want the best there is at this time, this is it!

Really awesome book with a lot of cool experiments for the young scientist to be doing with a parent! My brother loves it!

This item was already open when I received it today. It looks like someone opened it then put it back together all wrong. Not sure if parts were missing or not. Terrible that this is how I got this. It was going to be a gift but with the way it looks it will not.

Not much in the box but silly "safety" goggles that probably don't meet safety standards and a book.

My boys loved this!!
