By His Grace and for His Glory: A Historical, Theological and Practical Study of the Doctrines of Grace in Baptist Life by Tom Nettles is a thorough (if you didn't get that from the title) look at the impact that the Doctrines of Grace have and should have on Baptist life. Tom Nettles is a world class scholar who brings a lifetime of study of history and doctrine to this book and the result is a product that will bless all who read it. As the subtitle states, this book is divided into three sections: Historical, Theological and Practical and I want to briefly comment on each section.The historical section begins with the division of General and Particular Baptist (which arose out of the Jacob, Lathrop, Jessey Separatist church) in England. Tom Nettles has written a 3 volume work on baptist history and this section provides a condensed look at many of these important figures. Nettles provides a historical walk which includes brief biographical sketches of over 30 key figures. What is helpful about this approach, as opposed to reading individual biographies, is that the reader is able to trace key thoughts and ideas in baptist history as they are presented and fought for. Many of these men faced opposition that was unique to their time period and moving chronologically helps the reader to better understand how thoughts and ideas developed. Obviously in such limited space many details are going to be left out, but this approach gives the reader a great overview of baptist history. Many of the men in this section are Southern Baptist. As someone who is not a part of the SBC I found this section a blessing as I was not familiar with some of these men. The best summary I can give of this section is that Nettles knows his history and he has blessed the church with a wonderful look at baptist history and the impact of the doctrines of grace.The second section is the theological section. Here, Nettles examines the doctrines of grace as a theological system. Nettles begins each chapter in this section with a brief definition of the doctrine being discussed (Total Depravity and Effectual Calling/Irresistible Grace are combined into one chapter). He also addresses some of the difficulties and arguments against the doctrine that are raised by others. This section is brief (just over 80 pages) but provides a helpful look at these doctrines as well as providing many quotes from Baptist history to show how these doctrines shaped Baptist life.The third section focuses on the practical, specifically how these doctrines provide assurance, liberty of conscience and the effect on world missions and bold evangelism. As someone who is currently looking into missions work, this last section was a great blessing to me. Anyone who holds to the doctrines of grace is aware of the many caricatures and false claims that exist. Probably the most known one is that Calvinism kills missions. I cannot state enough how Nettles dismantles this false claim. These doctrines, rightly understood, are what fuels missions. I know that personally, if I did not believe that God has chosen His people before the foundation of the world and that He WILL draw them to himself I would never entertain the idea of going to the mission field. Thankfully God is Sovereign in both the saving of sinners and over the means in which they get saved (through the foolishness of preaching). I am thankful for this book as it provides a thorough look at various areas of Baptist life and how the Doctrines of Grace relate to them all.I received a copy of this book from Founders Press in exchange for an honest review.

Mr. Nettles doesn't chase a great deal of theological debate to defend the Doctrines of Grace. He simply presents the history of those who have defended it through the centuries.The book is well organized and well written and anyone who completes its 428 pages will be better off for it.If it doesn't convince you that the "Doctrines of Grace" are nothing more than the faith once delivered to the saints, you will at least come away with a greater view of the Sovereignty of our God.

I thought that I had a good understanding of the Doctrines of Grace until I read Prof. Nettles book. Chapter 12 - Christ Died for Our Sins, According to the Scriptures, is the most awe inspiring argument for Particular Redemption that I have read by a modern theologian. I once thought I was a "fish out of water", being a Calvinistic Southern Baptist. But, now I realize the depth of the soil from which I have grown. I wish modern Southern Baptists were as faithful to Sola Scriptura as the Founders of the Southern Baptist Convention were.

The book contains a history of the doctrines of grace against the backdrop of the early Baptist preachers. Dr. Nettles also includes a wonderful primer on soteriology at the end of the book. A great resource for Baptists who want to know their history and who are looking for an introduction to the doctrines of grace.

This storyline brought me end from chapter one until the last one on the final chapter! My emotions were at an all time high as I turned each page! A very realistic storyline and it truly touched my heart!

I really enjoyed this book. I will definitely have my teenage daughter to read it next. I just hope that one day you will decide to rewrite this story and make it longer, I wasn't ready for it to end.

ANOTHER AWESOME READ!!!! This was a bit different from the gore I'm used to reading by you, but a welcomed difference and a SERIOUS page turner all the same. I finished this book in less than 2 hours!!!As long as you keep writing, I'll keep reading your works, so keep em coming!!!!!

I bought this book because of the reviews that said it was not the typical writings. As usual this author didn't disappoint. I really enjoyed this story. Everyone who has a single mom friend who works a lot should have her read this. I really enjoyed this book.

I chose this rating because of all the action and entertainment from the families and friends. I can't believe that Miguel got away with killing Sophia. Then shot Yvonne and then his family comes around to take her out. If both mom and daughter are got then whose going to revenge their deaths? Ihope to get the answers to these questions in the next chapter.

The plot was amazing, but it was all over the place. At one point I read a part where it states her friend was on her way then in the same story line they were on the school bus???? Really made no sense! This literally threw me off, I mean it was all over the place.. That was just one example....all in all, it was a good story line.

The story wasn't bad,just didn't make any sense. Too short and really didn't even seen like he wrote it

This book was so good so many young girls and boys now need to be so careful on social media'. Miguel was something else he knew exactly what he was doing. This was truly another great read.

In 2013 (at age 71) I experienced intermittent chest pain for months. In December of that year I saw a cardiologist who did a series of tests which indicated "multiple coronary ischemia," atherosclerosis, and an abnormal electrocardiogram. He summed it up by saying, "You are right on the verge of a heart attack." We made an appointment for me to go into the hospital in a few days for either stents or by-pass surgery (which option to be determined in the hospital with one more test).I went home and began researching information about alternatives to stents/by-pass. Meanwhile I ate only salads for two days and quit coffee. (Coffee seemed to intensify the chest pain). Just those simple changes helped me to feel a little better. The internet seemed to suggest viable alternatives, so I took a chance and cancelled the hospital appointment. Eventually, after much research, I settled on Dr. Levy's approach and his protocol of nutritional supplements listed in his book, Stop America's #1 Killer. Of the 33 supplements recommended I took 30 (plus a few others of my own choosing). The most important supplement was (and still is) vitamin C, which I took as ascorbic acid powder mixed 2:1 with sodium bicarbonate to make sodium ascorbate. This I took in 3 doses daily adding up to a total of 10-12 grams/day. Also important: L-lysine and L-proline and a lot of magnesium (as magnesium glycinate). And very importantly, I STOPPED taking a calcium supplement (which I had been taking for years).In regard to diet, I avoided milk per Dr. Levy's advice (and avoided all dairy products). And I avoided processed sugar and processed foods in general. No wheat products (gluten) and no soy. Minimal fruit (one grapefruit and one apple per day). On the plus side, lots of vegies both cooked and raw, sauerkraut, 3-4 eggs/day, lots of various nuts (no peanuts). For meat – only organic chicken and occasionally sardines. The only liquids were/are high-quality vegetable juice and lots of water (filtered). All food organic if available.Exercise: In this book Dr Levy devotes only two pages to physical exercise. He conservatively suggests that exercise should help. I did him a step better on this score in that I gradually worked up to fairly intense aerobics plus weightlifting, every other day. (Also a brisk walk every morning). It happens that I tested high in lead, and moderately high in mercury and cadmium. Elsewhere Dr. Levy suggested that heavy metals can be sweated out using a sauna. (I read three of his books and listened to his video lectures). I used my exercise sessions to promote maximum sweating (instead of a sauna) by dressing in layers of sweat cloths and super-heating my bathroom where I did my weightlifting.Dr Levy emphasizes the importance of eliminating dental toxicity. I've been lucky enough that I never had a root canal, but I had several amalgam fillings – replaced them last year with non-toxic material.So now I'm cured!!! The evidence?1 ~ Now (in a four-story apartment building) I can run many trips up and down the stairs, two steps at a time, at a relatively fast pace for 20 minutes straight with NO angina (no chest pain), and follow that up with 30 minutes of weightlifting. (In December 2013 relatively mild exercise caused chest pain.)2 ~ My blood work is much improved. The last time my doc wrote across the top page, "Very Good!"3 ~ My typical blood pressure is 100/65 and pulse 55-60.4 ~ I'm back to drinking coffee again – three cups, no pain.5 ~ I have more energy and feel better in general.If that is not "cured," what is? Thank you, Dr. Levy!! (Also thanks to the late Dr. Linus Pauling, and the Vitamin C Foundation, and the internet.)

Everyone will eventually get clogged arteries unless something else (like cancer) kills them first. You will need surgery or some other procedure. There are certain things you can do to slow down its progress - such as cutting back on sugar and fat, and removing all toxins. This book explains that those things are bad for you because they make it harder for the cells in your arteries to absorb vitamin C or use up the vitamin C in your blood. Here are some examples:a) sugar is chemically similar to vitamin C. So if you eat too much sugar, there is too much sugar in your blood, then your cells absorb more sugar and less vitamin C. Reduce the sugar and your cells will absorb more vitamin C.b) your body uses vitamin C to make collagen which is used to repair tiny cracks that are in your arteries. If your vitamin C is low, the body cannot repair damaged arteries, so it fills them with fat so you don't bleed to death. If you reduce the fat your body will have less to use to fill the damaged areas.c) when you smoke the body sees it as a toxin; to remove toxins your body uses vitamin C. So you then have less vitamin C for your cells to use. If you have mercury fillings, some of the mercury spreads to the rest of your body and it must also be removed, using up vitamin C in the process.We humans are not able to produce vitamin C (your dog does), so we must get it through our food or supplements.The solution is to increase your vitamin C intake to what most animals produce on their own. If you already have heart disease you need to also take other supplements to remove the fatty deposits.So basically, this book explains that there is a way prevent or cure heart disease even though your doctor will probably say otherwise and will recommend surgery or something else.

I also strongly encourage Forks Over Knives for a life long healthy eating habit.

Time we take responsibility for our health. After confiding in my doctor and following his advice, I found myself declining in health due to the medications I was taking. Finally I had no other alternative than to seek elsewhere for help. This book is one of the reasons I am alive and on my way to reclaiming my health.
