An American Sickness is a gripping, fast paced and revolting dive from 50,000 feet above into the morass of what passes for healthcare in the USA. Patients are barely tolerated in a system optimized to pass money from bank accounts to providers. The industry is mean, nasty and greedy, with worse results than comparable nations - for far more cost. Everything you feared is true, and there is much more in these 400 pages.Because Rosenthal (an MD herself) was a columnist for the New York Times, she received thousands of contacts over the years. She researched them and they provide the vivid and shameful examples of financial abuse in the industry (with real names). She has distilled them into a perverse list of principles of US healthcare that explains everything and forms the backbone of the book:1. More treatment is always better. Default to the most expensive treatment.2. A lifetime of treatment is preferable to a cure.3. Amenities and marketing matter more than good care.4. As technologies age, prices go up rather than fall.5. There is no free choice. Patients are stuck. And they’re stuck buying American.6. More competition vying for business doesn’t mean better prices. It can drive prices up, not down.7. Economies of scale don’t translate to lower prices. With their market power, big providers can simply demand more.8. There is no such thing as a fixed price for a procedure or test. And the uninsured pay the highest prices of all.9. There are no standards for billing. There’s money to be made in billing for anything and everything.10. Prices will rise to whatever the market will bear.As the American economy freefalls into dysfunction, doctors and nurses have become “independent contractors”, just like everyone else. They must look out for themselves first. Administrators are no longer senior caregivers but numbers people who must limit the poorly insured and maximize the profit on every square foot. What becomes obvious is that the “market” system has failed utterly and completely. Health cannot be left to capitalists, be they doctors, hospitals or manufacturers. The rest of the western world and history are the proof: “If the March of Dimes was operating according to today’s foundation models, we’d have iron lungs in five different colors controlled by iPhone apps – but we wouldn’t have a cheap polio vaccine,” Rosenthal quotes Dr. Michael Brownlee. The incentives are all wrong. An American Sickness is a public service. It gathers, for the first time I know of, the various scams used by the professions to jack up bills. It explains the why and the how of all those bills being so high. It is well organized, clear and it puts everything into perspective as part of a greater scheme. It identifies what to look out for, what to ask, and how to skirt the event horizon. Rosenthal provides really useful links and sample letters, because customers are all in this same situation – ignorant and powerless. I particularly like her examination of prices for the same procedures around the world. You can afford to have treatments elsewhere, because the costs are so much less, that you can throw in the travel – for two – and still come out well ahead. This book is worth far more than a month’s health insurance; it can save you a fortune, and give you back your life.David Wineberg

I have been a nurse since 1978 and have had a front row seat to the changes in health care in the ensuing decades. I teach health policy and am amazed at what I didn't know about the way our health care system is financed. It is appalling. You should be scared. You should read this book and work for change.

Not a subject matter I would normally be interested in, but in the current political climate I felt I should get a better understanding of what is going on in the healthcare industries. The four chapters on the history of the American heath insurance industry, hospitals, doctors and pharmaceutical industry alone make the book worthwhile to read.I am not a big fan of the government getting involved in healthcare, however if we are going to let free enterprise control the costs I think it is important to know if the healthcare industries will respond to true competition like other industries such as the telecommunication and automotive industries. This book says it will not because it is functionally different. For example only 18% of hospitals are for profit. The 62% majority are nonprofit hospitals that get billions of dollars in tax breaks if they use their profits to help the poor. The government runs the other 20%. If nonprofits make too much money they just spend more. As court case after court case indicates they do not always spend those big profits to help the poor. You also learn the average of how much the pharmaceutical companies actually spend on research and development of a new drug. It is not always the billion dollar figure you hear so much about.I am sure once conservatives learn that the author is a Harvard Medical School trained doctor that now writes for the New York Times they will discount it as biased against business and not accurate. However, the question is not the author's political leanings, but is the information correct? I have checked some, but not all, of what the author has stated and so far it checks out.

A well written and detailed analysis of the origins and possible solutions of the disastrous state of US healthcare. As a practicing physician specializing in diabetes I see the effects of a dehumanized system where every segment is focusing in getting the biggest possible piece of the pie. You may not agree on every point but the analysis is solid and well documented. An analysis of why Americans are so poorly educated and gullible on healthcare issues would have added additional value

Dr. Rosenthal's background makes her uniquely qualified to write this well-researched book. Frightening, disturbing, but with a ray of hope...it is simply a must-read book for anyone needing healthcare in the U.S. Or, if you have friends or relatives who do, or will.

Review

"Black Protest and the Great Migration is outstanding. Its strengths are several, including its scope, the richness of the documents, and Arnesen's superb introduction and editorial interventions.""This is a well-conceived, important, and highly original volume that will allow instructors to seriously address issues of African American resistance and agency, the reproduction of white racism, and the origins not only of the modern civil rights movement but also of institutionalized racism."

Un buen libro

This is a great book for history students or anyone interested in Africa American history. Primary sources are used and they are easy to analyze.

This was more written in and beat up than I would have hoped for, but it served its purpose for my history class.

Great!

I bought this book for my son for a college history course. It shipped quick and was cheaper than the University price.

Overall impression: Great product. Great questions with thorough answers. Hits NBME style shelf questions and all High Yield TopicsStars: 4/5* 1 star less because of oddly worded questions that needed more steps of reasoning than would be expected on shelf exams.CONTEXT:The Pre-Test series is a great resource to hit high yield facts and concepts that will be tested on during medical school class exams and, especially, on the NBME style Shelf Exams. After using this book, answering all the questions, and annotating First Aid with any exceptional tid-bits, I scored high on my pharm class and on my pharm Shelf Exam. Also a great book to keep in my office during MS3 year to run through specific chapters (Speaking specifically towards OBGYN and related drugs and psych and the psychotropic therapies).SHIPPING: Fast and reliable. Provided shipping details (*Amazon Prime Member)PACKAGING: Received in brown amazon box or packaging envelop. Product packaging was professional and retail-qualityERRORS: None notedCUSTOMER SERVICE: I did not need to contact costumer service at all for this product* I did NOT receive this product at a discounted rate for this review

Not a very good book. First of all, it says on the cover, "500 USMLE-style questions." 80% or more of these questions are NOT in USMLE Step I format at all whatsoever. Some are extremely long (several paragraphs), some are 1-step reasoning (factoid memorization-recall), and many are testing non-pharm concepts or are just simply too easy. Also, there are some errors/spurious questions as well. For example, there is a question in the Antimicrobial and Antiviral chapter which asks, "A patient with HIV/AIDS... develops an opportunistic infection with P. jiroveci.... WHich drug are you most likely to use to treat the pulmonary infection caused by this protozoan."Uhhh... Pneumocystis jirovecii is a fungus, not a protozoan.Anyway, there is also problem with the answer key... as the question number is one number off the listed question answer in the back of the book. Not too big a deal because you can figure it out pretty easy, but an extraordinarily SLOPPY error that could've been fixed with basic editing. Then again, so would a basic error like the question I just listed.Overall, not a very book. There are some questions that will be ok review for M2 class exams (especially if your class exams are the bad 1-step reasoning kind), but definitely not a good USMLE Step I resource.

Good explanations, good questions.....explains the logic behind many of the correct answers and incorrect answers. I've learned a lot from using this book so far in cardiovascular section. However, a downside is that the if you haven't finished almost the entire course of pharmacology you'll be doing questions not knowing if you've learned the concept of the question until you've read it and the choices since each chapter addresses 4-10 different types of drugs. So, for an example a chapter called "central nervous system" has antidepressants, sedatives, opioids etc..... so it's a good book to do a comprehensive check after learning all the drugs in each chapter. Or you can simply skip the questions you haven't learned. However, if you are a med student and time is a premium, spending time to read the questions and realizing you haven't learned it can be time consuming. Another huge problem is that some topics just aren't very thoroughly covered. For an instance there are very very few virus related questions, respiratory, renal and GI questions (I really mean very few...about 20 for each of those topics).

Got what i ordered. Its a book.

Great book for reviewing pharmacology. It's a little out of date (which is why I didn't give it 5 stars). The explanations are great for explaining which is the correct answers and giving reasons for why the other ones are wrong.

Great book for testing your Pharmacology knowledge. It even includes a few things missed in my classes. The explanations at the end of the chapters are great. I highly recommend this book for Pharmacology if you're in medical school.

The chapter Antimicrobial and Antiviral the answers and rationales were off and the answers were marked wrong! When I attempted to contact the seller I got no reply back and I am very unhappy due to the fact that I could fail the course due to this typing error.

The book is full of helpful questions to supplement understanding of lectures. I recommend if you need the extra questions to prep for exams.

The Race Underground: Boston, New York, and the Incredible Rivalry That Built America’s First Subway, by Doug Most

Amazon.com Review

An Amazon Best Book of the Month, February 2014: While reading Doug Most’s The Race Underground: Boston, New York, and the Incredible Rivalry That Built America's First Subway, it quickly becomes apparent that the 19th-century world was a dirty, slow-moving place. Not only were the modern cities of the world filled with horses, they were filled with their excrement, along with all the billowing smoke and caked dirt that modern industry of the time could produce. The Race Underground offers a colorful and informative description of that bygone era. Famous names surface throughout the book--men like Andrew Carnegie, Boss Tweed, and Thomas Edison. But Most ties the story together through two less famous, more essential brothers: Henry Whitney of Boston and William Whitney of New York. When the city of London built the first subway, it might have seemed only a matter of time before one was constructed in a major U.S. city. The truth is much more complicated and fascinating than that. Most shows how getting through government intransigence and payola was as daunting as getting a hole carved through the earth. It was a time when great minds turned themselves toward bettering the world they lived in, but in some ways the past seems all too familiar. --Chris Schluep

Imagine my disappointment when my college professor assigned Notes From the Underground and it turned out to be a mere existential novella. Give me Doug Most over Dostoyevsky anytime. Dan Shaughnessy, author Francona, The Red Sox YearsThe Race Underground is a great American tale, filled with moments of surprising drama and unforgettable characters fighting against impossible odds. With New York City at a halt, explains journalist Most, the influential Whitney brothers of NYC and Boston dreamed of a city subway system to beat bad weather. But each brother wanted his own city to be the first to finish its subway: And so the great Boston-New York subway race was on. Makes today’s Yankees-Red Sox rivalry seem tame by comparison." –The New York Post"At first glance, a history of American public transit might sound like something you'd be forced to read in an engineering class. But the Boston Globe's Doug Most has come at the potentially dry subject from a unique and engaging angle: The story of two brothers — one in New York City and one in Boston — who each dreamed of creating America's first subway system in their respective cities. Most's narrative chronicles tackles the enormous undertaking at every level, from the high-powered political figures at the top to the "sandhogs" who created the tunnels, offering an intriguing top-down look at American transit." —The Week, "18 Books to Read in 2014""It is a story of rapscallions and risk takers, engineers and entrepreneurs, dreamers, darers, and doers — and it is thoroughly researched and splendidly narrated by Doug Most." –Boston Globe"Our subways are the vital lifelines of our greatest cities. They are also symbols of our indebtedness to earlier generations who through innovation and perseverance took us from horse-powered transportation to subterranean rail. Doug Most’s The Race Underground is a fascinating account of how New York and Boston tunneled their way into the future. This book proves again that American history is a treasure trove of great stories, this one filled with drama, sacrifice, loss and unimaginable success." —Ken Burns, filmmaker, creator of the PBS series The Civil War and many others"An almost flawlessly conducted tour back to a time when major American cities dreamed big." —Kirkus Reviews (starred)"[Most] delivers a fun and enjoyable read about a vital, transformative period." —Publishers Weekly"The Race Underground tells the story of how we got there, and it's an enlightening—and surprisingly exciting--ride." –Shelf Awareness (starred review)

As a native Bostonian, the offer of a non-fiction book about my home town was the best inducement. The beginning is a little rocky, but it becomes clear that, after those chapters, all the backstory was necessary to have what follows make sense. The lessons on geology, dirty politics, and the civilized sniping among the main characters lets it roll along nicely. It's not a book to hurry through because so much relevant detail is laced through every chapter.

Main focus of the book is on the personalities, funding and contract issue of building the Boston and NYC subways as well as some details of how the construction was done, and I found that quite interesting. Lesser focus on the engineering. However, Sprague's engineering work on the early 12 miles Richmond system is discussed in a few pages, but not as much detail as in the PBS special on the Race Underground. A curious lack I thought is there is nothing in the book about the first generation of subway cars that ran in the tunnels, no mention of who built them, their size or power requirements or how they were powered by the 3rd rail..

The biggest problem with this book was that this was sold as a great rivalry to build the first subway in America, fought tirelessly by two brothers who would reshape the way many of us get around the city and the country. The only part of that lure that was true was the part that reshaped the way that many of us get around the country. Other than that, it really was never a thrilling story. Mr. Most jumped around, never sticking to the story line on the inside jacket of the book, and briefly mentioning the Blizzard of 1888 that supposedly "changed history forever". It was an interesting read, but could have been crafted better by an actual historian and not a journalist moonlighting to get some extra money.

This book was thoroughly fun. I really enjoyed it, living as I do in Boston, and having lived in New York, and seeing how the subway system was conceived and built n both cities was interesting. I'm no specialist, so it was readable and interesting without being so detailed that I felt I was plowing through information that just got in the way. Boston won the "race" by the way.I also had tine unusual experience of reading the book on the red line of the Boston subway, which was stuck in numerous slowdowns and service delays (and a complete shutdown of the subway due to a blizzard) over the week of January 26th to 29th, 2015. The lousy service added a full hour (and in one case, two hours) to my commute. The subways still need a good deal of work, but I'm glad they exist, though reading about service delays in the 19th century while stuck underground in the 21st, was somewhat ironic.

The Race Underground captures a compelling story of the challenges associated with progress of mass transit. The author does a very good job of portraying the practical challenges that led to the creation of the subways in Boston, New York (and a handful of other cities) while also painting personal portraits of the individuals involved. Well written, entertaining and a fascinating look into the history of something we take for granted today.

I enjoyed reading this book, but it was not on the level of some of the great non-fiction books that have been released. The history was interesting to me, but I felt it jumped around a little bit too much and it seemingly tried too much to tie the fortunes of Boston and New York together when they really weren't. By attempting to tie them together, it jumped from one city to the other in different chapters / sections and I am not sure it worked as a literary device for me. The information was great and it was a good, solid read. It just wasn't a special, have to read book for me to tell people about.(less)

If you saw the PBS production, then you have to have this book!!! The PBS production was fantastic & this book is also beautifully written. Actually, anyone interested in electric traction, should read this great tome, & then and watch the PBS program for a better experience (even if you watched the program the first time).

I like history, and I like infrastructure. This book brought two together in a very informative and interesting style. It was almost like a novel, making me feel like I was living in the 19th century when the bulk of the book is centered. It was clear that this was not an academic thesis, nor is it a collection of regurgitated newspaper articles.Because of my hectic schedule I wound reading it in small chunks over a couple of weeks. If I had the option, I could easily have read it in a couple of sittings because it was that interesting. The traversal across time and geography ,move around at a pace that kept you wanting to see how it all came together. While the subject is not suspenseful, the distribution of facts combined with historical context and personal perspectives made it an intriguing story.

I was widowed 6 years ago. I read a ton of books on single parenting. This one actually acknowledged that you could become a single parent by other means than divorce which in itself was nice. But what was also nice was it gave really good advice on how to fill that void for your kids, which is missing in all the other books that assume Dad is still alive and just needs to be "more involved". I found its overall tone very constructive, no-nonsense and useful which was also missing in many other books. It gave very straight forward advice on all of the topics and was child focused in its advice which I enjoyed. Many other books try to candy coat and mince words about dating, etc. and this didn't. It gave straight advice on what is best for the kids and expects that if you are reading the book that is what you are looking for. It is the book I have bought for other single parents that ask for recommendations.

I'm so grateful I bought this book. I had read the authors' book "Moving Forward After Divorce" [also excellent] and I picked this one up because I liked the first one so well.My beloved husband of 15 years abandoned me about 7 months ago for his "online romance" and moved several states away, leaving me alone to raise our 6 young children. To say it has been traumatic and horrible is an understatement. That is why I SO NEEDED this book. The authors spend a lot of time talking about how we frame our lives and how our attitude shapes our children. In one section, they are discussing two different mothers - both of whom have been treated really badly by their Exes and left to raise children alone. One of the mothers is sad and talks a lot about the "tragedy" of their lives [and it was very tragic]. The other mother acknowledges the tragedy, but chooses to frame things positively ["We are a great family!" "Good Things Are Going To Happen To Us!"]. As I was reading the section, I remember being *angry* reading it because they were saying that the first mother was wrong to say the things she did, to frame their lives so negatively, etc. I was thinking "But she's RIGHT! LOOK what her husband did to them!". But as I read what David and Lisa had to say, I gradually realized that they were right - for the sake of the children, a positive mindset was essential. It was a real turning point for me, and it has been of great benefit to my children - who have come through this amazingly happy and positive, which is astounding under the circumstances. This whole book is full of absolutely *amazing* advice - as a single parent, you will find every chapter helpful - you will find help you may not even have realized you needed. I truly enjoyed the way they wove the stories of other single parents through the book to illustrate what they were trying to teach - it was very interesting, comforting, and engaging. This book made me feel truly equipped to accomplish the difficult task I have ahead of me - a very welcome thing indeed!I've read a lot of books on single parenting at this point, and none of them have been as wonderful and helpful as this volume. I highly recommend this book, and I deeply thank the authors for their work - they definitely helped my family!

As a single mother, I was looking for practical advice and inspiration. This book keeps things at a high level, and is not well edited - several passages seem to have been pulled from articles about how friends and families of single parents can help support them - useful for compatriots, but not for single parents themselves. And although it does so with a relatively light touch, the book is quite church-centered - too much for my taste. If you attend a mega-church or think that renewing a relationship with a god will help you along your path as a single parent, this book could work for you. Otherwise, it's too high-level and has no more practical information than you could glean from a magazine article on (general) parenting.

This book should really have a subtitle about being for divorced or abandoned parents. I bought the Kindle edition after reading the description and some of the reviews, but wish I would have known that all advice and anecdotes are focused on divorce or abandonment. May not be a bad book if that is your situation, just not the most helpful in mine. Wish there was a better book I could suggest, but I am still looking. It seems that no "single parent" books address death of a parent, which is quite different than divorce.

I really enjoyed this book. I am two years post-divorce and have two little boys, and I found David and Lisa Frisbie's advice right on the mark. From giving encouragement to single parents to giving guidelines for dating and remarriage, this book really helped me feel better about my single status and more self-confident in my parenting abilities. Kudos to the Frisbies for their dedication to helping us single parents!

This book, I think, is a must read for any single parent, male or female. It offers very practical advice with plenty of realistic stories and ideas. I'm a single parent and this book brings me much relief in some areas and great advice in others. I've read it over and over. And sometimes if I know I'm struggling with a certain area I can just read the chapter pertaining to that to refresh my memory. Would tell any single parent to read this! LOVE IT!

I bought it for my daughter who was newly single with two sons. She liked it. It is pretty common sense stuff that you would say "I should have known that!", but it helps to be reminded.

This book so far is great still reading it

This is an absolute gem of a book on the school of esoteric wisdom known as the Rosicrucian Order. There is a cloud of mystery that surrounds the Order, and this book helps to lift a lot of the fog by expressing not only what the Order actually is, but also what it is NOT. Dr. Case's commentary on the allegorical texts that brought the Order to the surface of public consciousness - the Fama Fraternitatis and the Confessio - is enough to make this book a treasure worth owning for any student of spirituality, especially of the esoteric wisdom of the ages.Beyond Case's adept exposition of the two publications mentioned above, he goes beyond and describes the grades of the Order, which did not originate with the publications but were created over time by learned occultists with a firm grasp of Hermetic Qabalah and the process of liberation or awakening. Case's detailed description of each grade with tarot correspondences is priceless and demonstrates not only his understanding of the Western mystery school tradition, but the Eastern yoga tradition as well (the two being closely related). My only negative, and a very weak one, is the way in which some of the gematria is used throughout - it seems like a slight stretch in certain instances. Most of the explanations of the allegory via gematria, however, are eye-opening and leave little room for doubt as to their validity. The explanation of C.R.C.'s vault, the compendium of the whole universe, as described in the Fama Fraternitatis is brilliant, to say the least.I can't praise or recommend this book enough to the true spiritual aspirant, especially those who have chosen the path of the Western mystery school of esoteric wisdom. If you're a member of BOTA (Case's Builders of the Adytum), you MUST own this book. It will only strengthen your faith in Case's credibility as a teacher of the mysteries and of the legacy he left behind in BOTA.

Studying all the negative comments about this book, the following group reveal themselves: 1. Those with over-bloated egos who want to be masters without paying the coin 2. Those who read only a few from this illustrious work lines and dared to comment 3. Those who're in organizations that claim to be the true R.C. 4. Those who are so hoodwinked with the Christian Rosenkreutz phenomena that they're unwilling to leave it 5. Those who do not know that Western Mystery Tradition means exactly what it means - a tradition and know one copied from anyone let alone invent the tradition not G.D. nor S.R.I.A. 6.The orthodox minded who see Satan in everything not sanctioned by the Church. To all these people the Rosicrucian manifestos say "for we will not move gross wits." This is a work not for jokers and the lazy. Neither is it for those looking for a romantic read which fill most New Age and self helP books that have the temerity to call themselves spiritual. There is almost no personal attachment to this work. The author does not claim to be a Rosicrucian, he merely interprets what the manifestos say and nowhere is Christian Rosenkreutz mentioned by name. Those who say he is a Rosicrucian claimant definitely did not read this book. Rosicrucianism according to the manifestos is nothing but Christian Hermeticism. This book settles the Rosicrucian argument once and for all and exposes the various groups answering the name Rosicrucian. The True Rosicrucian is every child of the One Reality especially those who dine at the Table of Life - those who are one with the Father. The hero Our Father and Brother C.R.C. Is none other than the Christos - the Universal Consciousness enthroned in the heart of man whereby he is called Microcosm. No organization secret or open can lay exclusive claim to Rosicrucianism and Rosicrucianism has nothing at all to do with that joke called AMORC. This is the best and most illumining book I have ever read. I can only speak for myself. Like the manifestos, Paul Foster Case's book is addressed to the erudite of the world and it does not move gross wits. L.V.X.

A wonderful work showing how comes that the initiation occurs in other planes and the importance of tarot in this path. Moreover, it shows the correct interpretation for the history of Christian Rosenkreutz which has an occult meaning instead on an historical one which can be unveiled through Gematria. The book not only mention that but unveil it for you! (Evidently the reader must find more by himself). If you want to understand deeply the Fama and the Confessio, this is your book. One of my favorites books ever!

Paul Foster Case is one of those rare people who managed to crack the code of Western mysticism. His dissection of the Rosicrucian mysteries is far more than a beginner's survey. It's a profound work. My only warning is this: he dives right into the deep end. If you haven't studied Western mystery traditions before, much of what he says will feel like he's just pulling random ideas out of the air. I would suggest starting with [ASIN:B001IXS90Q Smoley]] who gives an excellent set of overviews of broad and specific topics without the extreme depth of Case. Once you feel comfortable, follow up with Case and you'll find that you get quite a lot out of it!

Few books written on the Western Mystery Tradition cover the subject as well as this. Paul Foster Case not only understands the subject extremely well, he also gives excellent instruction on how to learn it.

Paul F. Case writes for easy understanding.

I have read and reread this book for over 20 years. Each time I refer back to it, I am amazed with regard to the Knowledge packed inside. Several other peers and I have noted how while reading the TIRO, we experience a sensation of Love.

This is a carefully written and attractively presented overview of that esoterica of Rosicrucians that can be shared with outsiders. The focus is on Quabbalah and Tarot, with little on alchemy or astrology. Although this is an insider's view, with little critical balance, there is only the slightest criticism of dissident views. It is not a casual read, but I found it worthwhile. It is probably no accident that the central Truth of Rosicrutianism is in the middle of the book, on page 147.
