About the Author

Brian Kurtz has been a serial direct marketer for almost 40 years and never met a medium he didn't like . . . and while he's had much success, he also must admit that trying to sell subscriptions and books on the back of ATM receipts and under yogurt lids were only a "good idea at the time." As a key business builder at Boardroom Inc. with founder Martin Edelston, Brian worked with, and was mentored by, many of the top marketers and copywriters who have ever lived. Today he consults and works directly with bleeding-edge direct response marketing companies and entrepreneurs in a wide variety of categories and in all channels through his two mastermind groups, Titans Mastermind and Titans Master Class (and soon to be a third, Titans Xcelerator). He also publishes books and materials for direct response marketers and writes and speaks regularly at marketing and copywriting events. The only thing Brian loves more than direct marketing is his family. And umpiring baseball is right up there with direct marketing.

I really enjoyed this book. I found the author's humor to be delightful. It is fun to read words that Americans do not usually use and at times I had to figure out what he was talking about. He is quite charming in an odd sort of way. He doesn't hesitate to make fun of himself and his personal achievements. I liked his discussion about the beauty of the country and his kind thoughts about the diversity of cultures he found along his way. It is a good read. I have read many hiking books but this is different because he is traveling by bicycle. I learned a lot about long distance biking and the necessity of knowledge about bikes and landscapes in order to be successful. I recommend it for anyone interesting in this trail and the many adventures it offers!

I just finished this delightful book, "Dividing the Great", by John Metcalf, a recount of the author's mountain biking adventure with a friend on the Great Divide Mtn Bicycle route, which follows the CD from canada to mexico. (The how-to book on that is "Cycling the Great Divide", by Michael McCoy.) Both "John and JK" are from England, so some of his descriptions and phrases are quaint in that foreigner sort of way.The Great Divide Cycling Route is popular among mountain bicyclists, as well as dual sport motorcycle adventure types, like me. I have ridden much of the Montana sections over the years. I have also met several people on the route, bicyclists, dual sporters, and locals such as waitresses in some of the small towns along the route. So, I thought the book might be interesting - I was right.Metcalf does a nice job of keeping 6 weeks of adventure interesting without being repetitive. It is a nice blend of touristy facts, descriptions of topography and scenery, and his personal reflections, not to mention the challenges of all that pedaling. I liked the logistics - water and food (to stay hydrated and carbohydrated, and avoid passing out - becoming "bonked"), camping/lodging, and the like. For us moto-heads who enjoy writing ride reports, it is a nice lesson in how to keep it interesting. In fact, he largely skips over descriptions of the roads and trails.Apparently, Metcalf is somewhat modest, he does not brag or boast: Their's was quite an adventure, 2500 miles or so in about 6 weeks, while carrying only one change of spandex each, one tent, two sleeping bags, tools, extra tires and tubes, and that's about it. (Most cyclists pull a small trailer, or use chase vehicles, and take 3 months or so.) As you may know, there are very few towns of any size along the whole route - and they can be two or three cycling days separated. Bicycle shops are few and far between.Having ridden parts, I can attest that the actual route is quite grueling, ranging from paved roads to wash-boarded gravel, to single track trails. I found several sections to be very challenging on my KTM 600. There is plenty of steep, lots of headwinds, but mainly, this is VERY remote country.Their goal was to finish in about 6 weeks: exactly twice as long as the current world record of 3 weeks - hence, I presume, the title of Dividing the Great. That may seem like these guys were whimps, but believe me, they were not.I won't give away the end of the book, except that it is very enjoyable. And finally, Metcalf describes lots of fun and funny events along the way. As an amateur mechanic who occasionally does his own wrenching, I enjoyed this interaction:Mechanical problems prompted a visit to a bike shop. The mechanic was cranking down, tightening the bolt pretty hard, putting a fair amount of effort into it. Metcalf, worrying he might twist off the bolt, says, "That's pretty tight".The mechanic says, "Don't worry, that's only 35 psi.""35 psi?""Yea, that's the pressure in my veins - at that pressure may arm veins are dilated. Get up to 45 psi and my forehead veins pop out." Funny and so true.Tom WarrGreat Falls

I couldn't decide if it were a crappy guide book or a crappy dairy of his ride. He tried being funny but I thought the humor fell a little flat at times. The brits humor is dry after ll. I did love the day to day detail description of the ride. It was so easy to read that I kept wanting to see continue to see if anything interesting would happening but it never really did. If you are wanting tall tells and wilderness action this is not the book for you. Instead it is the day to day life on the Trail written in great detail.

John Metcalfe has written a highly enjoyable book about the adventure he and friend JK had mountain biking the Great Divide route. While they approached the trip as somewhat of a race, the writing never felt rushed and included plenty of details about every day of their endeavor. Metcalfe managed to maintain an engaging writing style while focusing on the trip. This is in contrast to many other adventure travel tales I have read where the author goes off on tangents, neglecting to tell about the trip itself. I doubt I could complete this trip in twice the time John and JK took but it sure was fun reading about it.

If you enjoy biking, hiking or the outdoors and are a reader, you should give this book a try. I read these types of books pretty often and think John Metcalfe nails it. You can picture what he is experiencing without google images - a sign of a good story teller. When he is exhausted after battling head winds, lack of water, near 100 degree temps and gear falling apart, you're right there with him. He does a great job of detailing the quotidian events on the trail while sprinkling his tale with geographical, historical, and personal anecdotes. For me it was a page turner till the end. A really enjoyable read.

Great book. Very funny stories. If you like Bill Bryson, you will like this. It make me want to get out of my damn cube at the office and get on my MTB to ride this. I am recommending this book to some friends - maybe I can get a group together to ride this. Would love more details on the technical aspects of planning the ride - gear needed, what you brought, etc. But I know that is not what the book is supposed to be - it is a travel journal and a good one.

Just an honest, for the most part hysterical, account of a great adventure. If you have adventured yourself, and found yourself in pitiful situations of your own doing with no way out but forward, this is a book for you. If you can find humor in absolute misery, read this book. Because a new day always dawns on the worst of situations, and the beauty and solitude and challenge that led you there in the first place, exist and greet you. From the lackadaisical decision to go, to the trials of getting to the trailhead from England, to day to day and hour to hour observations and struggles, to people met, to strange situations, to landscape description, griping, equipment trouble, doubts and personal stench - this book has it all.More than anything this book has inspired me to ride some of this trail in my own state of Montana. And when you'd rather keep reading this book instead of doing the wifely duty.......well, need I say more?

We highly recommend half of this book. It's full of challenges that are accessible by almost anyone, and there's a lot of variety. For instance, you might be given two different word definitions & have to name a homonym set that fits. Or you might be tasked with listing 26 different color names, one for each letter of the alphabet. Or come up with a list of words that begin with the prefix "ant-" based on various clues. We find these types of puzzles both challenging & genuinely fun. And for most of them, they're the types of challenges that you can read aloud to a group--or to a significant other--to enjoyably while away a long road trip. But then there's the other half of the book. That's the half filled with some of the most useless trivia from long gone eras. You might be asked about a wealthy socialite from the 1920s, or a slightly famous murder trial that took place during the Great Depression. Occasionally there are questions from the 1990s or--even more rarely--from the 2000s. But these are few & far between. For the most part, you'll get a lot of questions that you're really only likely to know if you lived during the early-to-mid 20th century. In retrospect, the cover text is very revealing: the book claims these puzzles were designed to "keep your brain young." That makes sense if it was written with an an older audience in mind.Bottom line: if you were born in the 1940s and enjoy word puzzles & trivia, it's a no-brainer to buy this book--you'll probably enjoy every page. If you were born in the 1970s, you're going to struggle a lot but you'll still get a lot out of it. And if you were born in the 1990s or later: enjoy the word challenges, but prepare to skip many, many pages & roll your eyes a lot.

Book arrived in perfect condition. I am finding the puzzles, games and trivia quite fun, some a tad difficult but all interesting (I'm not what the younger reviewers consider "old" either) If you feel you are too young to know the answers; research, broaden your horizons, learn about the past, after all, it repeats itself often. Someone commented on "outdated trivia"; it can be referred to as past culture and history; learn something old, you may learn something new! If you feel the book is too simplistic, wow, good for you, you might want to look in to going on Jeopardy (not being sarcastic actually). Some reviewers gave low star reviews due to the fact they themselves spoke "broken English". The book is written in English, often utilizing words containing two or more syllables; so, if you don't understand the words 1. look them up in the English Dictionary and/or 2. Cross reference the English language words, which you don't understand, to your home lands' language; you may learn a few new words which is a positive thing. The book can actually be a fun tool if you don't know the American culture, you might just have to look up the answers more than others, not a problem, it's called learning . If you find some of the puzzles difficult, play with your kids, spouse, friends, etc., making it a fun, learning experience (and if you all get too frustrated, just peek in the back of the book and say "DUH, I knew that!") For those who are drastically challenged in memory, this book may be a bit too difficult and frustrating; as for me, I struggle with some of the "timed" challenges, but rather than getting frustrated with myself, I simply try to answer the best I can on my own time, hoping that maybe my mind will catch up as I practice the puzzles. I'm grateful for this book, much better for me than watching nothing on television or staring at my cell phone all day long. Finally, for those who only know "newer trivia", write your own book, after all the "old" saying goes "necessity is the mother of invention". (Just a little trivia for you).

I am a Speech-Language Pathologist and purchased this book to use with patients during therapy to target memory/executive functions. I thought this would be a fun alternative to some of the books I use all of the time. For the price of $10 this is still a great purchase but the tasks are definitely higher level cognitive tasks and are not appropriate for many of my lower level patients. I think this book would be a great challenge for typical adults or entertainment for teenagers on road trips.

Love this book - obviously since I gave it 5 stars. I've purchased other books that are suppose to be "brain" games, puzzles, etc., only to be so disappointed once they arrive and find out that they are nothing but word search puzzles or some such. This is definitely worth the money. A variety of quizzes that I've never seen before. You will be in for lots of fun, and you don't have to be a word freak or such to enjoy this book. I just ordered the sequel and cannot wait for it to arrive.

Purchased for a friend after brain surgery to keep her busy/active/recovery. My husband saw it and loved it. So we ended up purchasing a second one for us. Works well to pass the time by yourself or play with others.

My husband and I had a lot of fun with this trivia book! However, I was expecting more variety. The author came up with a few games and repeated them throughout the whole book. I expected there to be 399 DIFFERENT games, and that was not the case. Also, the intended buyer is clearly a much older generation than us. My husband and I are in our 20s, and this book has trivia about 1940s TV shows and very little trivia from 1980s-Present, which we would be much better at.

I wanted something to keep my mind active but also I wanted the challenge of a game and I wanted to be entertained as I learned new things. This book exceeded my wants. Its a great activity for me. I learn, I recall what I knew, I can do it at my own pace. But the activities are not so hard as to discourage me from continuing. The small amount I paid for this book is nothing compared to the hours of entertainment and fun and learning and mental exercise this book has given me. WELL WORTH MY MONEY. I am going on 70 years old and I appreciate the opportunity to get away from the insanity of most of the TV programs. Can't say enough good things about this book except to look for Book # 2.

I have been interested in Dolores Hart for many years and knew she had become a Catholic Nun, but I did not know the whole story until I read this wonderful book. She lived for a period of time on the North side of Chicago, which is where my wife was born and raised. She went to a Catholic High School on the North side and she eventually became a Hollywood actress. In fact, she gave Elvis Presley his first on screen kiss. While she was in the movie industry she frequently went on retreats to the convent where she eventually ended up. She recently appeared at the Academy award in her full Catholic Habit because a documentary film she was involved in was up was up for an academy award, but she did not win.She found peace and contentment in her life at the Catholic convent and will live there the rest of her life. This was a very inspiring story. In conclusion, this book would be of interest to anyone who has been a fan of Dolores Hart.Rating: 5 Stars. Joseph J. Truncale (Author: The Samurai Heart: An old warrior's poetic tribute)

I have waited many years for this autobiography of Reverend Mother Dolores Hart and knew it would be one of those marvelous tomes that, once you picked it up, you would have a difficult time putting it down, and re-reading certain passsages over and over again. The life story of this extraordinary woman, who gave up so much for so little, yet so much more, is not told as a remarkable tale of a person who was struck by lightning and immediately converted to religion, but it is a warm, at times funny, at times heartbreaking, life story of a young girl who came from a broken home but achieved fame and fortune in her late teens and early twenties as a film and stage actress of renown who eventually found that certain something that had been missing in her life, and decided to attempt a career switch that still has people scratching their heads and asking that all-important question, WHY?Reverend Mother Dolores, along with longtime friend Richard DeNeut, details her decision that was anything but overnight, and draws us into her search, meeting some truly marvelous people along the way. Her struggles with life as a young actrress and later, her life as a young novice are poured out for us as she bares her soul for all to see. She talks of the tears she shed at night wondering if she did indeed make the right decision to enter the religious life, or if she made a terrible mistake, and how, after many years, realized that she's in the right place. After 39 years of correspondence with this special lady, I was anxious to find the answers to questions I never asked her in my many letters to her. My letters were written to a young nun who was a former actress, and I dwelt on her current career, not the one from which she retreated, although I wanted to know, "What was it like working with this person or that person?" Nor have I ever once, in all those years, sent her an item to sign, although I had several as I began collecting memorabilia from her movie career in the mid 1970's. I was rewarded with that discretion by having my name published in the Acknowledgments section of her book, MUCH to my surprise! I am now forever linked with a friend I have never met face to face but have shared most of my life with, bonded by that priceless gift of prayer. I have purchased the hard copy of this book, I have it on my Kindle, and I've purchased additional copies and Kindle versions for friends and family members.I am forever thankful for Reverend Mother Dolores' decision to take us on her incredible journey with this well-written book. I encourage anyone to read it. You, too, will meet a friend for life.

This page-turner, beautifully written by its subject, Mother Dolores and her long-time friend, Richard DeNeut, will arouse your every emotion. Without the prompting of Richard, it may never have seen the light of day. Dolores Hicks was born to a teenage couple and her early life vacillated between the homes of her parents and grandparents depending on the degree of alcohol-fuelled misery that mother and father generated. At 10 years of age she embraced Catholicism, more by circumstance than desire, but found that she could communicate directly with God. This shielded her from the interminable family squabbles and it became paramount in her every-day life. Dolores (Hart), now a gifted 19 year-old Hollywood actress was paired with Elvis Pressley in “ Loving you”. It was her first, and his second film. She met him again in “King Creole”. At 20 she branched into theatre and starred in “The Pleasure of his Company” which ran for over a year in New York. The rigors of this left her exhausted, and she spent several days recuperating at a nearby Benedictine monastery, Regina Laudis. She never forgot this experience, and would visit the site whenever she was on the East Coast. Her career and beauty continued to skyrocket and she was considered to be the future Grace Kelly. Being a good listener many of the mature movie stars like Gary Cooper and Anthony Quinn confided in her and she dined with, and was courted by the Hollywood high and mighty. She relates many amusing episodes like a time when she found Peter Sellars stark naked in her bed. He was promptly dispatched home! At 24, and engaged to be married to businessman, Don Robinson, she still had serious doubts that Hollywood and marriage were able to further her longing to be closer to God. To the chagrin of family, husband-to- be and close friends, she abandoned her career and became a postulant nun at the cloistered Regina Laudis. For three years she cried herself to sleep as she felt abandoned, lost and humiliated from senseless obedience rules. Her refusal to give up was a sure indication that she had not run away from Hollywood but was desperately seeking something Bigger. Was this attainable? You will find the answer and more in “The Ear of the Heart”. A ‘must read’.

Review

“The Lucifer Effect will change forever the way you think about why we behave the way we do—and, in particular, about the human potential for evil. This is a disturbing book, but one that has never been more necessary.”—Malcolm Gladwell  “An important book . . . All politicians and social commentators . . . should read this.”—The Times (London)“Powerful . . . an extraordinarily valuable addition to the literature of the psychology of violence or ‘evil.’”—The American Prospect   “Penetrating . . . Combining a dense but readable and often engrossing exposition of social psychology research with an impassioned moral seriousness, Zimbardo challenges readers to look beyond glib denunciations of evil-doers and ponder our collective responsibility for the world’s ills.”—Publishers Weekly   “A sprawling discussion . . . With this book, Zimbardo couples a thorough narrative of the Stanford Prison Experiment with an analysis of the social dynamics of the Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq, arguing that the ‘experimental dehumanization’ of the former is instructive in understanding the abusive conduct of guards at the latter.”—Booklist   “In the Stanford Prison Experiment, Philip Zimbardo bottled evil in a laboratory. The lessons he learned show us our dark nature but also fill us with hope if we heed their counsel. The Lucifer Effect reads like a novel.”—Anthony Pratkanis, Ph.D., professor emeritus of psychology, University of CaliforniaFrom the Hardcover edition.

Part of coursework. It came across as somewhat rationalizing what really is unacceptable behavior whether by groups or the individuals within. The theory seems to rest largely on the phenomena of groupthink or mob mentality as a possible cause of abusive/inhumane acts within structured environments; in my opinion. The Stanford Prison Experiment seems to further develop upon what was demonstrated in Asch Conformity Exp. and Milgram experiments. The nature/nurture argument continues to be up for debate in society as a whole, I think it may help explore that topic with some objectivity. The Stanford Prison Experiment does shed some light on what may possibly influence people to commit possibly unthinkable acts outside generally acceptable cultural and social norms (cruelty). There is a point as in Pavlov, Milgram, and Stanford Prison experiment(s) where ethical boundaries are blurred in the name of greater understanding of human behavior and that may be open for debate in this case as well as it was stopped. I bought this one used, and was from a 2007 printing, there were references and a few chapters updated to reflect and analyze current events. I assume the newest edition may be edited and updated beyond as well.

The basic argument here is that the problem occurs as a consequence of the situation and a power imbalance. Though, indeed a negative situation is not conducive to "goodness" and power imbalances can lead to abuses, Zimbardo, like other psychologists are as delusional as the Dalai Lama. They are arguing on the surface and not accounting for differences in the population. Who is more likely to take advantage of the situation? Who is more likely to abuse their power? Who is the target? All of these experiments are also done using "prototypes". I would like to see Zimbardo and other psychologists make the Bloods and the Crips get along. Maybe they can bring together some psychopaths to gather around a campfire with a teenage girl. Regardless of the situation, "evil minds" will find creative ways to commit acts that are made to seem innocuous of any crime. Recently, NYC has been running ads that "It's Not Just A Joke, It's Sexual Harassment". That which is inconvenient becomes subverted. In my opinion, psychologists should be advocates for a systematic "branding and branding" of people, yet their optimism allows psychopaths, sadists, masochists, and sociopaths to move about freely and hide behind statuses. Psychologists have no idea about what they are talking about because everything they speak is a generalization or some "peer reviewed" nonsense that means nothing. The problem with this field is that it has no overarching theory to make sense of anything. You have many divisions and all at war with each other. What psychologists don't understand is that our "psychology" is a result of an evolution against "human predators". We are evolving away from "mental illness". "Mental illness" is a result of the conflicts between persons, groups, and the struggle for existence. "Mental illness" appears on a decline, and regardless of the "diagnoses", the problem is not the "diagnoses", which is only a "symptom" caused by the "actual problem".Though, Zimbardo's work may be of significance, his approach is wrong because his outlook is absurd as a consequence of him not having any direction. Psychology operates on a false paradigm. I would even go so far as to say that psychologists think that the mind is detached from the body, even if they say the opposite, their work may reveal otherwise because they would be bend to the consensus to avoid alienating anyone. Psychology is a very dangerous science which should reveal that the world is actually an "insane asylum", hence why psychiatrists need to take into account "cultural and historical relativism" when making a diagnoses.I suspect that regardless of the situation, people who feel connected to each other will not cause the situation to devolve. Regardless of power imbalances, people who feel connected with each other will work together. If you add a Milgram experiment on top of the Standford Prison experiment, people who feel connected with each other should find ways to outsmart Milgram and escape the Standford Prison. "Connection" can be social, and situational, but at it's core, it needs to be "existential".Does anyone else think that Zimbardo looks like "Lucifer"? Why did his girlfriend have to intervene to stop the experiment. The "objective psychologist" became delusional about his own experiment and was facilitating a situation that would have otherwise caused harm. He was a bystander, enjoying abuses by 1 group against another. As he has aged, he has become numb to empathizing with the suffering of others. His girlfriend proves that women would be more cued into empathize, but the qualifier is that I cannot generalize about all women.I suspect that Zimbardo's girlfriend was of a certain type, as some people would enjoy the suffering of others as it would de-emphasize their own distaste for themselves. Here's an example of why generalizing cannot work: in times of tragedy, you may value your life more, or you could be thankful that tragedy did not befell you. This creates a dichotomy of perception. People on the positive side of the scale would value their life more, but people on the negative would be thankful that it was not them. The latter is lacks empathy for the subjects tragedy and should reveal a sinister psychology. Regardless, you can make a scale that can rate people as to what degree they adhere to either, and figure out if it is "conditional or situational; long-term or short-term".I just demonstrated how you can "brand and grade" people. This however would be thought of as inhumane, so the "great and wise" Dalai Lama should be deferred to. Regardless, of psychologists denying this, their work is bending toward the ideals of designated "wise men" of the world. In psych wards, the population is not divided and individuals quarantined, and just like in society, all the crazies are moving toward you. The Dalai Lama wants us to have "compassion" and the psychologists can't systematically "distinguish" anyone because that would be "discrimination".Give the crazies freedom, and have tolerance because "we all make mistakes". It's the situation that causes "bad things". When the news reports on the latest rape victim, don't say that I didn't warn you.

A book everyone must read. Let me rephrase- a study every educated person should know about in some detail .Of all the things that have been written about this study, the one I find the most intriguing is that the vast majority of the volunteers hoped to be assigned the "prisoner role". The guard and the prisoner roles were randomly assigned, during an era when many young people had lifestyles and ideals for which they could conceivably be arrested. As such, a number of volunteers voiced the opinion that "the experiment" would be good practice for them, if they were ever incarcerated, to learn to be strong and conduct themselves with integrity. What really happened, and how quickly the veneer of civilization wore off as soon as "guard" roles were designated is chilling, but well worth reading.

Here's how to attempt to avoid going along for the ride. Far reaching, motivating and well worth more than one read. I'm taking this one slowly because while the writing is great the subject matter is challenging and thought provoking. I'll be going back to this one again and again. Thanks Dr.Zimbardo for your lifetime of work and thought on this theme.

Excellent exploration of good and evil, especially for those who cannot imagine they could ever do something generally seen as "evil." This book provides historical and multicultural evidence that that masses can generally be persuaded with ideology, language, and crisis to join in unbelievable crimes against humanity.Perhaps more importantly though, this book explores the structures, attitudes, mechanisms, and loci of power which encourage people to forget their higher selves and commit a wide range of atrocities. By utilizing that knowledge you can begin to disarm systems such as schools, law enforcement, and corporate mentalities that lead to the abuse abd murder of other human begins in the name of what is "right."This book serves as an excellent jumping board to explore our own mental colonization.
