This book is great for supplemental problems. We use the Smith, Van Ness, Abbott for our course and, since this is by Van Ness and Abbott, it follows along well giving additional problems with solutions. Highly recommend all the Schaums Series for anyone needing quick reference guides.

This is the best book you can buy, if you want to LEARN classical thermodynamics, the principles and how to apply them. Here are the highlights:(1) All basic concepts are finely presented and explained. The discussion is complete, thorough and concise.(2) Topics covered make up a complete presentation of thermodynamics for chemical engineers, mechanical engineers and chemists. For physicists the material may be too extensive and the applications too many. A statistical-mechanical version of thermodynamics would be more appropriate for them.(3) All aspects of the theory are demonstrated with examples and applied to real engineering situations.(4) It is given much effort to teach you (a) understand fundamental thermodynamic concepts and (b) how to solve real world problems.In summary, it is a fine book, highly recommended for students, engineers and scientists mentioned in (2).

The Schaum Outline Series has stood the test of time and Thermodynamics by Abbott and Van Ness is no exception. If you want to learn thermo beyond the typical undergraduate level, progressively working through the problems chapter-by-chapter in this book will do the trick.Although this book does follow the old sign convention for work (positive when the system does work on the environment), it properly follows the specific energy convention of "energy/mass". Thus, the ideal gas equation is PV = RT, where V has units of "volume/mass". Once this simple terminology is understood, steam tables can be readily used without confusion.

Frankly, I cannot understand what the purpose of this book really is. It's certainly not a book on general or theoretical thermodynamics. If it is a textbook designed to guide the undergraduate student to understand thermodynamics, it fails. It is just not detailed enough to make the subject clear to a student. The short discussion of the theory is just that: short. Do not be mislead that you will read a few pages and understand a subject which needed centuries to be developed and still is confusing to many scientists. The problems are just not enough for an undergraduate student who wants to be good in solving problems. I had bought this book when I was a student and openned it only a few times to study. The experience was frustrating. I haven't reffered to it for years and never again will. A far better book for the undergraduate is Cengel and Boles thermodynamics.

I seriously love these travel books. I own about 10 to different cities. Any time we take a trip, we buy one. I'll keep it simple...1. There are tons of pictures.2. There is a nice map.3. It fits in my back pocket (sticks out a little).4. It's glossy so it can get a little wet and be ok.5. It breaks things down in such a way that you can easily see the highlights in any city.6. I'll mention tons of pictures again because if you compare this to a Fodor's side by side you will see why you want this one.

Love these Eyewitness guides. They are easy to use— once you understand how they are put together you can enjoy the info on other destinations quickly. There are more than 10 choices as well, so you are never without options. Small enough to carry around. Bonus map means you really don't need another guide. And they act as a souvenir of your trip because they include great color photos.

I used this guide on a recent visit to Chicago. No guide book can include everything about a city, especially as large and diverse as Chicago, but this Top 10 guide can't be beat for concise information, colorful maps & graphics and pocketability. Highly recommended.P.S. Be sure to the visit "The Bean" (in this guide it's listed under its official name "Cloud Gate") in Millennium Park.

It's occurred to me that even though I've lived in Chicago for a good number of years, I still don't know the city *that* well. I picked this book up on a whim since I've had good experiences with DK travel books in the past and it floored me because of the amount of things I haven't been to and history I felt like I should have known. It's a combination of both me sucking at Chicago history and this being a really good book.Most travel books suck, but the DK Top Ten books are essentially the most distilled books you can get for a city and make a good book you keep in a pocket or in a bag while exploring.

Please be warned: the Kindle book is significantly different from the print version. A comparison of the Table of Contents and sub-sections will show what I mean. I specifically ordered the Kindle version to get hotel recommendations. This section is entirely missing from the Kindle book. Other key sections are missing as well or at least significantly re-formatted..

I had traveled to Chicago before but I bought this book for my travel partner who had never been in the area. There were great suggestions for places to eat and what to see. It includes websites and phone numbers for all of the place suggestions and it also gives you hours of operation. The absolute best part about this book is the included map. It gives you an easy to read map of the city and a transit map that is super helpful on the go. I would definitely recommend this product if you're spending a few days in Chicago and you need suggestions.

I purchased this book before I made a trip to Chicago for the first time. I took three grandchildren with me and wanted to make sure we saw interesting and fun places for all of us. It was full of detailed information of places to go, see and do. Also the costs were included which made it very helpful for planning our trip. If you have never been to Chicago, you will want to order this book ahead of time so you will be informed to make good use of your time. We used the trolly to get around and found that the guides are very friendly and full of information, an added bonus! Don't forget to have some Chicago Style Pizza!

I have four college guides (Fiske, Tanabe's America's Best Colleges, Princeton Review's Best 380, and the Insider's Guide), plus I subscribe to the US News college rankings. Each resource has its strengths, but the Fiske Guide to Colleges is the one I reach for first when I want to look up a school. Instead of just putting statistics in narrative form, or quoting students who have little basis for comparison, Fiske places each college in context and delineates the school's distinguishing features. For each entry, Fiske gives a list of "overlaps," competing colleges that share the same applicants, which is helpful information during the discovery phase of a college search. Fiske opens each college's entry with a summary paragraph that seeks to distill the unique essence of the college, often by differentiating it from its peer institutions. There are many places where you can get the bare facts about a college, but Fiske gives you an informed opinion that is much more valuable.

"Fiske Guide to Colleges 2018" (887 pages) is a curious college-guidance/search book in my opinion. It lists the "best and most interesting" colleges in the country, about 300 out of 2,000+ four year colleges in the US (and even some Canadian and British schools) are written up.According to the introduction, these colleges were selected on the basis of academic quality, geographic diversity, a balance of public and private schools, and schools that are currently popular for certain programs (engineering and technical schools, religious emphasis, etc.). Being from Ohio, I look at the list of 13 schools that "made the cut" and inexplicably Xavier University (a very fine Jesuit college here in Cincinnati) is left out of the book (but Xavier of Louisiana somehow did make the cut). Huh? While the descriptions give a good flavor of a particular college, there are essentials missing, such as the exact tuition/room/board (there is only a general 1 to 4 star rating on how expensive a college is, and even those are misleading, for example American University (the school of my youngest) is listed merely as "moderately" expensive for a private school (defined as "$41-46K for tuition"), way, way off the mark! For the record, AU full-time undergrad tuition is $49K for 2017-18 and add another $14-16K for room/board and other miscellaneous fees. Also not helpful in my opinion is that the colleges are presented alphabetically, rather than by state, since most kids look at colleges in a particular state (usually their home state), although there is an index by state.On the other hand, the descriptions of the schools are oftentimes right on point. Check the first sentence on American University (the college of my youngest): "If the odds to enter Georgetown are against you and you can't see yourself on GW's highly urban campus, welcome to American University." That is EXACTLY what happened to my daughter: not admitted to Georgetown, admitted to GW and AU, but turned off by GW's urban campus and instead charmed by American's idyllic campus, hence AU. The descriptions of the school my son attended here in Ohio are also on point.When my daughter was simply looking to get basic information, she did not spend a lot of time with this book. As she narrowed her choices, she did read up more on her pool of colleges in this book. Bottom line: if you are at the very beginning of your college search, this is not the book to start with. For that I might instead suggest "The Complete Book of Colleges" issued by the Princeton Review, "College Handbook" issued by CollegeBoard, or "Barron's Profiles of American Colleges". On the other hand, The "Fisk Guide to Colleges" (which really should be titled "Fiske Guide to Select Colleges" or something like that) is instead more appropriate/helpful to get a second (or third) opinion once your child has narrowed down his/her selection of colleges of interest (assuming of course it made the Fiske cut of 300).

I'm a Harvard Grad (class of '02), professional test-prep tutor and college consultant based in San Diego, and I give this book my qualified recommendation.I've been using the Fiske guide to Colleges with my students for over 10 years now. Although it's not my favorite college guide (that honor goes to Princeton Review's College Guide The Best 380 Colleges, 2016 Edition (College Admissions Guides)), the Fiske guide is still helpful and worth checking out for its unique perspectives.However, be forewarned that the Fiske guide is not exactly an unbiased, realistic source of information. If you're looking for honest criticism of colleges as well as glowing praise, then don't bother looking here--it makes every college look great. Yes, student interviews are included, but they are overwhelmingly positive--it's almost as if these entries are extensions of the admissions department from each school. The most negative kind of comments you can find are those such as "classes are demanding" and "this school is for people who want to make a lot of money after college."If you're like me, then as a college-bound student (or the parent of one) you don't just want to read the good news about your prospective schools, but the bad news too. If the dining hall food is lousy, the dorms are dreadful, or the town is not college-friendly, then this is something we deserve to know, rather than have glossed over in a sea of overblown praise. I just love Ric Edelman's books! I have them all, and yes! I do listen to his radio show! I have purchased each of my son's Ric's book "The Truth About Money" as a gift. All of his books are basic, easy to read, common sense information. I would love to tell you I have a million in the assests due to following his information, however, I sometimes just can't get out of my own way! Let me just say that I had adjusted my investments according to info I gathered from my Edelman "Reads" just prior to the horrible market "adjustment" a few years ago and it saved me thousands in my 401K and other investments. While I did lose a little $, it was not nearly as bad as it would have been if I had stayed positioned like I was! I have suggested Ric Edlemans books to all my friends and coworkers. Even if you have a financial manager, education is a powerful thing! Be informed, or be a victim!

I wish I had read this book in 2007 when it was published. I would be miles ahead in my retirement savings because this book uncovers the truth about the illicit practices foisted on us unsuspecting investors by the big mutual fund companies and so called Advisors who are really just selling us products that they make commissions on. No problem with people selling, or making money, but full disclosure and ethics should also come into play.

This was a great concept book written in understandable terms. Eye opening confirmation of strategies that are crucial to success while avoiding pitfalls of institutions and advisors not demonstrating fiduciary responsibilities towards investors best interest.

I always felt intimidated by financial jargon. I own investments but didn't understand much about them or how much it was costing me to hold them. I even put off reading this book for a while because, though I knew I wanted to learn more, it seemed much like "homework" so I dragged my feet. But Ric Edelman has a wonderful ability to present the concepts so clearly that I wished I had been introduced to Ric and his books a long time ago. I have gained much understanding, specifically about mutual funds and 25 practices that are common in the industry. Was it a tough read? No way! You probably won't believe it, but the author's use of humor to illustrate his points had me laughing till tears rolled down my cheeks. I'm not a gal who pays any attention to footnotes, but let me just say, you should with this book. . .you'll be glad you did. If you own retail mutual funds you owe it to yourself to read this book.

I never fail to learn something new when listening to this audiobook - which is better than the book I'm my opinion because he seems to read his material the way he meant it to be heard.I return to this book at certain times in my life and will find new meaning in the old and mundane and learn things that didn't catch my attention before.Because of David Whyte I have begun to memorize poety - not only his poetry but others he mentions like Rilke or Mary Oliver.The thing is that all of these new age or self development books have the same message when you get to the bottom of it all. You just have to find the one that speaks to your soul.

I wish the "midlife" reference were not in the title as it made me hesitate and delay trying this product for way too long. It is such an exquisite treat and so powerful in way more ways than I can convey through words. David Whyte's uniquely powerful delivery adds further punch to his great insights that reach ever deeper the more one listens. Thus I found it amazing the first time I listened and keep being blown away by finding it ever more powerful every time I listen. In addition to the content, the place David Whyte speaks from is itself profoundly impactful. At the time I ended up deciding to buy this product I had greatly lamented Amazon not selling David Whyte's "poetry of self-compassion" as I had adored that tape. Although I still regret not having yet been able to find it on CD as it is even more powerful yet, I am so glad that it ended up pushing me into giving this product a try as both are invaluable and well worth owning and repeatedly listening to over the years as special treats that get ever better over time.

Yes, you'd remember the flower, its color, dimensions, fragrance and so on. But maybe it is when you are just passing by the flower and you intuitively/unknowingly turn around to look back and see the flower again because you wanted to because something touched you , is the moment that you are naturally receptive to the flower.Of course it matters how someone speaks, what words s/he uses. how their tone of voice is, how and when they emphasize on a word, how they flow as they speak and how sincere they are. David Whyte is excellent on all the above. If only he would give space to his listeners to absorb what he just read/said at their own pace. Words touch different people in different ways.All that said, this audiotape is very rich. It fills your backpack with amazement and inspiration on your personal journey through the Great Unknown.

The perceptive and soul-wise ability Mr. Whyte has comes through brilliantly in this CD. I've given many copies away to friends. As we enter maturity, Mr. Whyte addresses a lot of subtle vicissitudes that arise in our unconscious, giving shape and form to the questions we now need to be asking ourselves as we enter the transition. His overall theme, of "A Beautiful Mind", drives this work, he emphasizes life as a work of art, and how that outer expressiong will change at different times as we grow. Living comfortably with the UnKnown is a deep lesson, a practice, a commitment; "Midlife" is a solid road map on uncovering and discovering the great wealth of landscape within.

As awkward as it might be to consider oneself at mid-life, it is a genuine relief to have such a clear and open-hearted guide such as David Whyte help make sense of it all. This CD is profound and inspiring. I could listen to Mr. Whyte's voice all day long. He draws on not only poetry (his own and that of others), but on basic life observations and recollections. The only caution I'll give is that some material seems to be lifted directly from another of his CDs, entitled "Clear Mind: Wild Heart". I bought the Kindle version, which works great on my Samsung phone.Very cute short story about a pumpkin that rolls through town, through a parade, and ends up in a big pot! Really cute for kids anywhere from toddler to elementary school aged. Cute illustrations are modern, whimsical, and bright, bound to inspire any child but with classic touches that adults will enjoy. Very lively pictures on each page offer a lot to look at and notice, which keeps kids looking at the page and wanting to open the book over and over.My daughter enjoys it and it makes a great seasonal story for fall and winter reading.

The story line is very simple indeed as critics say,but to me it says that a 5 year old won't find much in it. though there is a simple message that can be taken out about transformation, purpose or being of service:o) I think it would go for very young children that are just being introduced into story reading, 2- 3 year olds. I can see how it would be a joy to play with little ones along the story asking questions about characters, counting stuff of different pages etc

Beautiful and creative illustrations are the heart and soul of this book. Simple plot consists of a little girl chasing her giant pumpkin, which has managed to roll away from her. Repetitive language and highlighted key words make the text appealing to preschoolers.While the story is not particularly creative, the child is introduced to nostalgic characters like the butcher, baker and the milkman. I do like the Marla's final solution to her problem at the end of the tale. Also available in paperback for those who want to savor the images over and over.

Children love to be able to share in a story that have lines that repeat. This fun story about a run-away pumpkin and the people who take up the chase will remind children of another favorite tale, The Gingerbread Man. The pictures capture the action as the listeners can hardly wait for the page to be turned.

This is an adorable children's story! I read it to my twins, who are 3 years old, and they loved it. It's basically about a little girl chasing a 'run away' pumpkin, and all of the people who join in to help her catch it! It has a cute ending, where everything turns out perfectly, and the townspeople are happy. My boys absolutely adore books, and they love anything to do with Halloween, so the combination in this book was perfect! I definitely recommend it for a great fall read for little kids!

When a pumpkin escapes, it takes the whole village to catch it. The storyline is fresh and worth reading again and again, especially whenever a child asks for a story. It's a good one for children to memorize as it's read. The downside for grownups: Because this is for younger children, it's too short.
