My mom is 88 years old and has, all of a sudden, taken up drawing! She draws some really wonderful pictures, but gets stuck on the same subject. I bought her 3 different drawing books for Christmas, so she could learn to draw different things. This was a great book for her.

Great for my 9 year old! She loves to draw and this really helps her learn! There is a picture page on the left size of the book and a practice page on the right side.

My 6 year old absolutely loves this! Easy to follow examples. I cant even believe how well this has helped her. Her drawings are amazing! Definitely easy enough for a young child (6,7,8ish) to follow.If my review was helpful to you, please choose YES. Thank you!

Great effort and easy decomposition for the creatures.I suggest the blank page next to the drawing to be divided vertically into 2 halves:The left one with the drawing drawn in dots for little children may learn what they have to do; while the right one to be left blank for the free drawing.This will not add pages to the book; yet make it easier to children walk alone!

Love the book. If I get the hang of doing the drawings, it will be a big step up from the stick figures that I usually draw.

Both of my kids ended up loving this. My 7 year old had no problem following the 3 or 4 steps to each person. However, my 5 year old couldn't complete each one so I gave him tracing paper to trace over the people and he loved doing that instead. He worked on it longer than my 7 year old did. We also have the "Pet" book.

Bought this for my daughter with her art kit for Christmas. She just turned 6 and was a bit intimidated by it at first. But after I sat with her and showed her step by step how to do it, she loves it. She is also drawing people far better now. Great teaching tool.

I got this for my kid to do in the plane. It was great that on the opposite page of every drawing, there is a blank practice page. It didn't even occur to me to bring drawing paper along, so I was thankful this was part of the book. Very handy!

Dr. Maxwell Maltz received his doctorate in medicine from the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Columbia University in 1923. After postgraduate work in plastic surgery in Europe, Maltz was appointed to head several departments of reparative surgery in New York hospitals over his long and distinguished career. He was a prominent international lecturer and on the psychological aspects of plastic surgery. He published two books on the subject, New Faces, New Futures and Dr. Pygmalion. In the 1950s, Maltz became increasingly fascinated by the number of patients who came to him requesting surgery, who had greatly exaggerated “mental pictures” of their physical deformities, and whose unhappiness and insecurities remained unchanged even after he gave them the new faces they desired. Maxwell Maltz was a plastic surgeon in the middle 1900's, and though his work miraculously transforms his patients' outward appearance, he discovers that his surgeries were effective on only a percentage of his patients as their internal picture of themselves had not been updated alongside the physical change. This book expounds upon the philosophy that the internal picture one carries in their mind's eye of themselves directly affects a person's sense of confidence and well being. As a boy I found this book in my dad's small library. Reading it helped me to see how we come to own facets of ourselves; unhealthy facets, that make us generally unhappy with ourselves. Disowning those facets is as simple as creating a new picture of oneself! I used the principles in his book to successfully walk away from smoking; simply picturing what my life would look like as a non-smoker. A well thought-out and articulate work from a very compassionate human being! As an homage to Maxwell Maltz; whom has so influenced my life (and obviously my health), I have cited his writings in my book for students, homeschoolers, self-teachers: "Take a Slice of Time." I'm barely on page 66 and couldn't wait to write a review. After only 66 pages my life is starting to turn around for the better. I've gotten a promotion at work and praises from family and friends over my willingness to act and striving for success. The principles applied in this book will change anyone open enough listen. Effort, willpower, man on the street white knuckling your way through is not the way. One must have a sense of surrender and instead of letting fear stand in tour way, put that fear behind you and let it push you forward. I can personally atest that this book works!

I've been on a self-help reading kick for about the past year. Between issues in my finances, health, relationships, career, I was being weighed down by it all. I've come across and read a lot from people like Jack Canfield, Joel Osteen, Law of Attraction - Teachings of Abraham, etc. They were all good, uplifting and helpful works in their own right, but something was missing. I was listening to a podcast and the host mentioned this book, which was something I've never heard about - ever or anywhere. I looked it up on Amazon and decided to order it. I am sure glad I did. For me, it brought all of the other ideas, concepts and practices together. Things like affirmations, burning desires, faith, action - they all are great, as long as they're operating in conjunction with the way you see yourself and want to see yourself. This book really stresses the importance of focusing on your self-image, which is something I've found many of the other works glossed over or lacked. It's a good work, laced with some biblical references which aren't overwhelming. If you can spend the money on it, it is certainly a great addition to your library. I've recommended it to everyone.

I was reading through the negative reviews outside of "get the old one" (which I agree with 100%). What I found was people being dissapointed in their boredom and the books repetition. Essentially I agree with them and I despise self proclaimed self help gurus (Wayne Dyer, Jack Canfield, Eckhart Tolle, etc) I was dragged into this mess of dillusional recipes for success by my wishful thinking father, who fell into Kevin Trudeau's GIN organization who pray on those wishing for an easy life. It was Kevin who on his 12 cd set (full of law of attraction garbage) recommended psycho cybernetics as a good read. At 18 with almost no desire to read or do much in life, with very low self esteem, and well intentioned, but incredibly selfish, unempathetic, stupid parents as guides I found this book gravitating. It's repeated messeges seemed to always say the right thing no matter what my current predicament. I've read this book dozens of times and I agree with the previous reviewer who said "all self help books can be boiled down into this book" and without the subtle sales crap (holy s*** I despise motivational speakers). Since reading this book I've read many many others but never finding any self help book fulfilling. This one perfects my perception of the word "genius" and has shaped my self esteem so. The concept of the Theatre of the Mind has changed my life, I'm an avid meditater and visualizer because of this book. This isn't wishful thinking, this is cognitive and habit training. It's imagination used practically. I think many other authors have helped me perceive the world the right way (Emerson, Bertrand Russell, MLK, Alan Watts, assorted others) but I believe Dr. Maltz gave me the tool that fit me perfectly. This practice gets better and more honest overtime, it takes alot of discipline to make it work, but when it does it works incredibly well."Do not wish for an easy life, wish for the strength to endure a difficult one" - Bruce Lee

Matt Thorn, the translator for this manga series, is actually a cultural anthropologist and associate professor at Kyoto Seika University. That said, he's uniquely qualified to present the particular cultural intricacies of this complicated subject matter to Western (American) audiences. Most translators used by American manga importers do not have this deeper academic understanding (granted, most imported manga to the American market are not slice-of-life seinen/josei genres either).I suggest *first* reading his two-page essay in the back entitled "Transgendered in Japan." It's extremely educational on how media, including manga, fit into the Japanese LGBT landscape--particularly how American assumptions and understanding of LGBT are quite different from the Japanese. The essay also reminds us that Wandering Son is a slice-of-life manga written with a realism you won't find most anywhere else; just because this is a graphic novel format doesn't mean the subject matter is well beyond the average adult's comfort zone of ignorance.To quote from Thorn's essay: "...Wandering Son is not a shojo manga. It is serialized in the adult manga magazine Beam, which enjoys a roughly 50-50 male/female readership. As an adult manga, Wandering Son is not subject to the sort of editorial restrictions it would be in a shojo manga magazine. There is no guarantee of a happy ending. The work is so lovely and gentle, it is easy to forget that it is essentially for grown-ups."We can only hope there will be some kind of happy ending for Shuichi and Yoshino, but because this is slice-of-life, we're reminded that Wandering Son shows us more about culture and ourselves (that is, non-LGBT reacting to LGBT) than idealized plot contrivances. Despite the main protagonists' idiosyncrasies, the reader can't help but get the feeling that their worlds are quite normal at the same time. Kids worry both about fitting in and being true to themselves; it's the eternal balance in finding one's place in a society.*Comment: It's true that the main criticism of Wandering Son involves the kids' psychologies; because the author is an adult writing an adult manga, she may not have their internal dialogues at the appropriate age level. I really don't know if this is true, however, because some kids are far more precocious and self-aware than others. Even so, because the target audience is actually adults, at the very least this series can serve to enrich the adult cultural experience; if a younger reader gets something out of this as well, that's a good bonus.

The Product: The book is beautiful. Lovely hardcover, a couple pages in color. I absolutely adore this publication of this manga. Thick, crisp pages, even with that new book smell, fill its covers. The first book blew me away, and I'm just as impressed with the second. The translations are quite nice, and explain the story just as effectively as the original Japanese. I hope that I can find more manga printed and translated just as well as this one.The Manga: Brilliant story, brilliant art. I am particularly a fan of the minimalist approach the mangaka took when designing her characters and the panels they inhabit. She complains in the first volume that she abuses white space, but I think that adds to the story in that it reflects the purity of these kids. I honestly think that this is one of the most important manga written in the past ten years.

I'm not very good at writing reviews, so I apologize in advance. I found this series to be very touching, and have completely fell in love with it. This series sits on my coffee table.

I bought this and a companion book for a nephew who had been searching for them. He loves them and they have come to mean a great deal to him.

This manga packs great sensibility and psychological depth through the most challenging of characterizations: that of grade school children. The narrative is very sincere and logical. This is an outstanding manga that is appropriate for any age.

Wandering Son takes a slice of life approach to its coming of age story, but to get a full picture Shuichi and Yoshino's journey it's best to follow them from the beginning. Start with volume 1.The brilliance of this manga is not only the care and respect shown towards the delicate subject matter, but also the realistic lens through which all of the difficulties of growing up are viewed. The struggle to come to grips with and define their identities intertwine with issues of family, school, friendships, bullies, etc. Instead of being a story solely about the fact that the leads are transgender Wandering Son is about the lead characters in their entirety, showing what an impact each aspect has on everything else. Shuichi and Yoshino are children growing up with all the "usual" problems of adolescence with an added dimension of societal pressure and hesitation to be their true selves. It provides a deft look at an important subject through fully realized characters who are impossible not to feel for and cheer on.Volume 2 continues the gentle pace previously established and uses little glimpses of daily life to show how things are changing for our leads. It establishes a peaceful atmosphere that is tinged with the tension of their secrets, and conveys emotional impact very effectively. I have 'Extreme Ownership' and was concerned JW's style may be too advanced, dry, preachy or over my twins' heads...WotWK proved me wrong!With "Way of the Warrior Kid," I set the expectation of one chapter a night. Once finished with the single chapter I tell them the name of tomorrow night's chapter to whet their appetite. Invariably, they beg, "One more chapter! Just one more!" It's written in a great first-person style the kids relate to. The illustrations and "I stink" humor of the wimpy Marc engage my kiddos and there is anticipation built into each chapter that makes us wanting to keep turning the pages to find out what happens next. Salt.Jocko's jiu-jitsu training has moved from the mat to the written word: the lessons are not delivered with telegraphed haymakers but with 'subliminal, verbal judo' and allegory.I'm so glad I took a chance and got this for our family. Lessons and lectures from dad can meet with resistance and eye-rolling (akin to teaching my wife handgun skills), but coming from a third party the instruction is eagerly welcomed! "...a prophet is not accepted in his hometown..."Now they are more eager to exercize (loved how they lit up when "burpees" were mentioned in the book - "hey, we know them, Dad! You taught us those!") And when it is homework or get-ready time I remind my kids about Marc and Uncle Jake - and suddenly they're all in. They used to whine when it was mean ol' dad asking, but they'll do what's needed when characters they admire/identify with or like from the book show them the benefit of discipline.If this became a franchise ala 'Diary of a Wimpy Kid' we'd be all in for future installments. Reading this has opened us up to more substantive reading - we'll weave in some quality kids books to our nightly reading that are beyond the fluff of kittens, Minecraft and Dr.Seuss thanks to TWotWK.The book will definitely support the 'all in, all the time' credo we're inculcating into our little ones.HOOYAH!p.s. "Zero dark-thirty" is now a part of my son's vocabulary and he laughs every time he says it and my daughter loves to say how she and mom need garbage can lids being clanged to wake up. It's been a great opportunity for bonding and laughing (while sneakily influencing their behavior!).

I got my first experience with Jocko from his other book Extreme Ownership and liked what he had to say.So, I bought this book so that my 8 yr old son and I could read it together. 1. To toughen him up a little and 2. To get him interested in reading on his own.Each night we would read 2-3 chapters before bedtime and before long, he kept asking me during the day if we were going to read it again that night.We both started referencing points in the book at times when something reminded us of it and began sharing the stories with friends and family.Before the end of the book, my son would be getting up early, setting his alarm to be the second out of bed, after dad.At the end of the book, my son asked if we could buy the 2nd book in the series...It's been about a week since we finished the book and last night he began reading the book on his own from the start.This is exactly what we needed. Thanks Jocko, keep them coming!

We pick up the story as the child is eating the last bites of pudding.Dad reaches the spoon into the cup one last time, scraping the bottom, then feeding his son the last chocolatey spoonful."All done!", He exclaimed before sitting back to relish in the satisfaction of having successfully flanked his stubborn son into taking his medicine."But wait...", he thought, "My mouth tastes funny..."He instinctively wiped the edges of his mouth, only to discover chocolate pudding on his fingertips."That's weird. I didn't take a single bite of that pudding."Suddenly he sensed the presence of someone other than his son. As he turned his gaze, their eyes locked."J-j-j-j-jocko?!", he stuttered."Good Evening, Dad", grumbled a smirking Jocko Willink."How did you... What are you...""I am sorry, Dad. This was the only way for me to get YOU to take YOUR medicine."Jocko went on to explain how he pulled off this elaborate con known in the SEAL Teams as The Willink Switcharoo. The objective of The Willink Switcharoo is for Jocko to implant an idea into someone's mind so stealthily that they believe they came up with it.
