The author does a good job of bringing the personal conflicts together, as well as the lack of history at times.The author was not a fan of the Papacy or Islam, so be warned of that if it will offend.7,085 locations. Sir Charles Oman puts together a very thorough and page-turning history that spans the former Roman Empire from Spain to the Middle East. I particularly liked Sir Charles's focus on the military campaigns that compose the period covered by the book. The coverage of the dozens of rulers and persons of importance during the period covered gets a bit confusing, but not thru any fault of the author - Sir Charles reports dutifully and very precisely on a time of lots of intrigue, war, and tumult. Be aware, though: The Dark Ages 476 - 918 AD doesn't cover economic and cultural history in any detail at all, so if that is what you are looking for, this book may not be the one for you. A good coverage of the religious, cultural, and economic conditions of the European Dark Ages can be found in Norman Cantor's "Civilization of the Middle Ages".
A fine work that was easy to read. There are a lot of historical characters to keep track of but I definitely enjoyed it.I have learned a lot. One surprise was the extent to which Arianism was a significant force again mainstream Catholic orthodoxy in the earlier dark ages, I had not thought it so widely accepted. I was also surprised by how widespread Christianity had already become by the 5th century.It is an older book but definitely a gem. It helps place historical events and characters more firmly in the stream of time (Mohammed, Chlodovech, Vandals and Goths). Some of these fellows and ladies are more interesting than the fictitious works on TV nowadays.
Tolkien most surely read these volumes. Similarities with Middle-Earth are striking. Modern history superimposes these Dark Age domains on the modern geography. I think that’s a mistake.Remove modern geography to enter the Dark Age circa 680 AD. The world is divided with geography hard fought by the Empire, Australasia, Neustria, Avar Khaganate, Lombardi, Freesia, Saracens, Moors. There are no European nations, no languages, no ideologies or religions recognizable today. Some argue that there was no such thing as the “Dark Age†but that’s simply not true. The nations, the people, ideologies, religions, of 680 AD are places lost in history. What emerges here is every bit as strange as Tolkien’s Men and Elves, Dwarfs and Orcs. The persons and place names are a fascinating Tolkien-esque linguistic origin.It’s a very long, slow, deep diving read. Add the time to internet search and an image of this Dark Age begins to appear in your mind, the evolution so foreign and distant that we might not believe it. There have been no more recent attempts to contain the 450 years of the Dark Age at this detail. There are surely errors here but where? I didn’t find any in my reference side trips. Total war, utter genocides, great wars and civil wars destroy almost everything that might provide more clues. Who among us are the proud descendant of Visigoths, Ostrogoths, Avars or Vandals? In fact, we in the West are all descendants from these Dark Age roots.I don’t know of another study that so squarely and completely defines the end of the Caesars, the emergence of ‘barbarians’ and the Eastern Empire and fast cycling western geography. The author provides a clear understanding of the tribal domains and objectives of Vandals, Ostrogoths, Goths, Franks, and Visigoths attempting to make their way, to become our long lost ancestors.It’s a colossal narrative. Assuredly modern research has discovered finds but none adequate to make the content of this 19th century whole anything but convincing. Modern investigations reinforce the utter depravity of the age. Does it get worse from there? This 19th-century history text forwards thoughts more aggressively and clearly than 21st century politically biased history writers.5-stars. Well worth the read. Firmly believable into 21st-century research.My lineage like everyone else is ancient. In this Dark Age they are documented to 780-800 and no further back. They were among the allied and recent 'Northmen' aka Normans within the bounds of the superpower of Australasia. I expect they spoke Oil. They emerge from history as 'mayor's' of the 'village' of Maule just outside Paris. In 300-some years they joined as allies of William beyond the Dark Age. They traveled to Britain in 1066, seized lands in Scotland where the family tree splits between brother supporters of Wallace and Longshanks. They arrive in the US at Salem in 1640.Like most every place Dark Age, there is no trace to be found of 300 years of Maule presence. There exists but a small trace in Panmure Scotland after Edward I. It feels personal.
This was a fun read, even if the material is dated. You get a good amount of editorializing from the author (who definitely has attitudes dating from over 100 years ago). For example, how he treats Christendom and Islam and how he describes the various leaders (and how moral they were) over the vast time he covers.The history is interesting, and Oman does a good job covering a vast amount of material quickly and without making it dull. I was quite pleased he considers both Western Europe and the Byzantine Empire. The Byzantine Empire's history is fascinating and very important to the Middle Ages, and it is nice to see it covered pretty well.Overall, an interesting read partially because it reveals how a popular historian in the early 1900s thought, and a lot of Middle Age history that I had not been exposed much to before (esp. the Franks).
Even that this book is old it is well written and vivid. The history is laid out more by region and tribe then by time frame so it is more easy to create a picture of Europe's birth of new nations out of that period turmoil and destruction.
Very detailed facts, facts, facts about which “tribe†with which king attacked which territory; who won; and then the next and next. Some, but not much, recognition of economic, climate, or population pressures - but - perhaps little is known about such things. The written record is often spotty and the winners wrote it - so - hard to tell who was good guys. Looks to me like there weren’t really any good guys. Author is clearly biased toward building nation-states; Europe as it is now; and Christianity. This period in history is a thousand little wars for no particularly good reason other than the self-aggrandizement of whoever happens to be king of his little territory at the time. Lots and lots of king’s sons killing each other to become king. Amazing that so many surfs and knights went to war so often for so little.
You need to be a real history buff to get through this book. Oman does a good job making the genealogy of the Dark Ages kings interesting, but that is a hard job.
