Many Moons: Learn about the different phases of the moon

From School Library Journal

PreS-Gr 2—This French import takes readers through all the phases of the moon by comparing its changing shape to common things using the phrase on this night. The book begins, "On this night, Matthew thinks the moon could be a bow for his arrow." As the lunar cycle continues, the moon is compared to, among other things, a banana, a smile, half a wheel of cheese, an egg, and a rowboat. Each spread features illustrations on the right-hand side, which cleverly reinforce the text on the left. The contrast between the black background and the white text, bright yellow moon, and the black or white (depending on placement) etchinglike drawings are minimal and eye-catching. A hint of the full circle of the moon is visible throughout, subtly shown in glossy black on the matte background. The last pages feature a simply illustrated explanation of how and why the moon changes shape. The title has sturdy, board book—like pages and is constructed to lie flat. VERDICT This solid introductory glimpse at the phases of the moon can be read on many different levels. Also works well as a book on shapes or a read-aloud.—Catherine Callegari, Reston Regional Library, VA

I gave this book 3 stars for it's nice aesthetic. The pages are sturdy and the illustrations are creative. That being said, I was expecting a book about moon phases, to read to my space loving 5 year old. What I received was a book about cute things that the moon reminds the writer of, in it's different states. It would have been nice if each page at least listed the name of the moon phase along with the picture. The moon phase information in the back seems like an afterthought. By the time I got to the last page, my kid lost interest. I will be returning this book.

Nice sturdy pages, good scientific as well as appropriate for young children

Great book for my 4 year old!

I absolutely love this book, as do the children to which I have read this. This is perfect for a preschool child. The artwork, the thick paper stock, the differing page textures - it all works so well. The book itself journeys through all phases of the moon... New Moon, Waxing Crescent, First Quarter, Waxing Gibbous, Full Moon, Waning Gibbous, Third Quarter, and finally the Waning Crescent. But the story pages do not refer to them as such. Instead the imagination runs wild with bows and arrows, bananas, smiles, wheels of cheese, eggs, rowboats, the sun, an owl, pregnancy, croissants, cat tails, nail clippings, and darkness. Oh what joy to see a four year old grab at the night sky later and claim he is eating a wheel of cheese! The artwork is exceptional. Every page is mostly black, with white sketches and bold yellow moon phases. The dark side of the moon is also black, but is a different texture - very smooth and reflective whereas the rest of the page has a matte finish. Children love to touch the pages and feel the tactile difference. While the majority of the book is full of wild imagination, the back page and inside board of the book give the actual phases and a short description. After a few reads, even small children will learn the phases of the moon. What a joyful book, highly recommended!

chipboard book about the different moon phases.i love the way the manufacturer/publisher utilized the printing process to illustrate the dark side vs the light side of the moon.to illustrate the dark side so it is not just mistaken as part of the book itself, a shiny varnish is used to represent the "missing" (dark) part of the moon.there are corresponding visuals (such as a pregnant lady's tummy, a cat's tail, an owl's eye, etc.) to represent the differing shapes of the moon phases.this would have been a great book for me when i was in grade school to learn the moon phases - i always got "waxing" and "waning" mixed up.this book is a wonderful introduction and reference.very pleased and very much recommended!

My girls (4 and 7) both enjoyed learning about the phases of the moon in this cute and clever book. The images are beautifully illustrated and the narrative was accessible to both ages. I appreciated how solid the book felt: it seemed durable enough to fit into the babies board book category, but was sufficiently illustrated and written to really cater to a wide range of ages. Both girls were fascinated to learn the phases, and I appreciated that there was a mini appendix in the rear of the book to satisfy the more scientifically curious. I can't say it gets a ton of replay value, so it will probably migrate to the library donation pile before long, but I am sure it will continue to delight in the next chapter of its journey!

This is a great picture book that makes the phases of the moon understandable to young readers, and those even a bit older readers who might pick this one up.The black background with yellow and white illustrations and text are eye-catching and interesting to children. While some vocabulary words may be unfamiliar to children because this story has been translated, the visual comparison the author makes with the moon to something a child already knows about is a great way for them to connect it to their own life.At the end of the book the phases of the moon are named so that older readers who might be looking for this will be able to attach the correct phase to the picture of the moon that represents that phase.I can see a wide range of ages enjoying this book, and it does a good job of explaining something that might not be easily understood.

This is an attractive and nicely done kids hardcover book. Each page covers a one of the phases of the moon. The book itself is printed on nice thick cardstock, and the black and yellow contrast of colors is very attractive and fun. For each phase of the moon, an image is shown that imagines that phase as an object, like a bow and arrow, wheel of cheese or egg. It is a cute way of making it relatable for a kid. The last page is a summary that captures all the phases again. My four year old loves this book.

Squids Will Be Squids: Fresh Morals, Beastly Fables, by Jon Scieszka

Amazon.com Review

Every once in a while a book crosses our desks that makes us sit quietly delighted--except for a few squeaks of unmitigated joy--and this oversized, energized, stylized, highly prized book of fables is one of them. Jon Scieszka has a simple philosophy of the fable: "If you can't say something nice about someone, change the guy's name to Donkey or Squid." After all, the alleged Aesop did it. Squids Will Be Squids offers lessons such as "Everyone knows frogs can't skateboard, but it's kind of sad that they believe everything they see on TV." Sure, it's goofy, but it's also saying to kids, "Don't believe everything you see on TV." In "Duckbilled Platypus vs. Beefsnakstick," the bragging platypus and his beefy buddy teach us "Just because you have a lot of stuff, don't think you're so special." Of course, there is nothing heavy-handed here--morals such as "He who smelt it, dealt it" and "Elephants never forget, except sometimes" satirically prance amid the more heartfelt snippets of sagacity. Scieszka and illustrator Lane Smith are unparalleled in their eccentricity and unrelenting in their boyish, twisted-yet-innocent zeal. In co-creations from The Stinky Cheese Man and Other Fairly Stupid Tales to The True Story of the 3 Little Pigs to Math Curse, Scieszka's wacko sense of humor and Smith's quirky, always gorgeous artwork thrillingly congeal in Molly Leach's creative, exuberant design. We see many picture books that are better suited for adults than kids, but this fine specimen is truly meant for goofballs of all ages. (Click to see a sample spread. From Publishers Weekly

Scieszka and Smith, creators of The True Story of the Three Little Pigs and The Stinky Cheese Man and Other Fairly Stupid Tales, turn their attention away from fairy tales to reinvent the fable, thinly disguising sage bits of advice as pithy morals. Foxes and grapes are too pedestrian for these veteran absurdists, who tackle boastfulness in "Duckbilled Platypus vs. BeefSnakStikR" and who denounce vanity in the story of a skateboarding frog. Unusual characters notwithstanding, each piece highlights an everyday, modern situation in the manner of Aesop's classics. Topics in these 18 tales hit the bull's-eye, running the gamut from the toxic clique (Shark, Wasp and Bacteria wonder why no one eats lunch at their table; "Moral: Think about it") to the dynamics of a group project (Rock, Scissors and Paper all blame one another for their bad grade; "Moral: Shoot") to handling friends and family. In "Termite, Ant, & Echidna," for instance, foolish Ant throws aside his best friend when he meets a new playground pal, realizing too late that "Echidna is another name for Spiny Anteater." Scieszka ventures deep into child appeal territory, as in a gas-passing anecdote about a skunk, musk ox and cabbage ("Moral: He who smelt it, dealt it"). Smith ardently keeps pace with Scieszka's leaps of fancy, lending credence to a talking piece of toast, a walrus with a phone and a spiny, spiteful blowfish. In one full-bleed painting, little green Grasshopper cowers in the giant shadow of his mother as she grills him about his homework; strokes of eggplant-colored paint extend the sweeping size of her tentacle-like appendages, while splatters of softer shades suggest the sweat from her brow. In another, the titular fable, Smith utilizes a cartoon-like progression of panels to contrast the animated expressions of Deer, Mouse and Rabbit as they enthusiastically attempt to plan an outing with that of the deadpan, naysayer Squid. Meanwhile the design, with text printed in three typefaces of multiple sizes and colors, drives home each moral. The oversize format allows for a variety of page layouts, not to mention an in-your-face attitude that will hold readers' rapt attention. Unlike Paul and Marc Rosenthal's satiric effort in Yo, Aesop! Get a Load of These Fables (Children's Forecasts, Mar. 23), this crafty volume pays tribute to the original fables' economy and moral intent. Scieszka and Smith thriftily present one tale per spread, and beneath this duo's playful eccentricity readers will discover some powerful insights into human nature. Ages 7-9. In children's literature, the main character usually is the cover subject and title such as "Charlotte's Web," "Froggy Plays Soccer," and even "Harry Potter," because the targeted audience is assumed not to be sophisticated enough to interpret indirect meanings. Then there is the trio of Jon, Lane and Molly, who, like Maurice Sendak, love to thumb their noses at convention. "Squids Will Be Squids," (a play on "it is what it is," perhaps?) is not about the ocean life of squids - it is a collection of wacky stories with morals. Apparently young readers were sophisticated enough to figure that out using the cover art and cheeky tone as their guide. The five and nine-year old I read this book with laughed with abandon even if they didn't always get the inside jokes behind the stories or the morals. Bathroom humor like "He who smelt it dealt it," was a big hit as was "It takes one to know one." I wasn't crazy about this work but I did love the title, and its exuberant, devil-may-care attitude and the numerous double entendres. The layout and design are extraordinary. There's plenty in here to entertain little and big readers. This is not a read alone book, though, even though it's geared for the read-alone age group of 4-8. The power in this work comes in sharing the experience. Otherwise I think it will fall flat. The moral to this review of "Squids will be Squids: Fresh Morals Beastly Fables" is "Never judge a book by its cover."

This book is hilarious. It is so snarky. I'm a big Jon Scieszka fan, have been since I was little, and want my son to have his books. My son is 6 and understood most of the humor in this book, but he is an old soul. I'd say this book would be better suited for 8 and up. The tales are hilarious, the humor is unique, and the artwork is AWESOME.The book is made up of numerous stories, about 2 pages long each. The characters in all of them are crazy looking...almost Tim Burton-like. The stories are enjoyable for both kids and adults. Overall this is a really fun book for anyone who likes off-the-wall humor.

A favorite book for many years now. Reading it with my grandchildren, I used and encouraged much inflection and varied voicing for different characters. Each story is unique and wonderful fun, though some are a bit gross. We still quote the title story, "Squids Will Be Squids," in our communications in person, by texts, and on Facebook -- "Great!" said deer will elicit always "Great!" said mouse.

I don't really understand the reviews here: firstly, who says that "children's books" are only for children? If you (the adult) enjoyed it, seems like money well-spent to me. Secondly, there seems to be a large number of humor-challenged adults and children. My wife and I (who are not children) think it is funny, and so does our two year old son, who also LOVES Cowboy and Octopus, which has the same sort of off-kilter sensibility. The comments that the "morals are not appropriate" are really strange to me -- the morals are the punchlines to what are extended jokes (which are funny, because the authors are quite observant).

Not really for kids

I got this book for a friend with two boys, ages 5 and 7. Neither boy "gets" the humor yet, but I think they will in a year or two. They're still at that stage where they are trying to understand what makes a joke funny (and failing), so maybe your 5 and 7 year olds are a little more comedically advanced. The drawings are great though, and those boys will "get it" soon enough. :)

I use these stories in my 9th grade classroom as a way of introducing Animal Farm. Aesop is classic (and we use those stories, too), but kids really connect with these modern fables. I know the book is meant for younger children, but it's a credit to Scieszka that his work is sophisticated enough to appeal to all "ages and stages."

great book and illustration but the binding is weird and the font is awful - it is impossible for my 7 year old to read it, and he's an excellent reader. the book closes on its own too easily. I could flatten it open but then I'd end up damaging the spine. oh well.

Probably a little more adult than child oriented, but clever Sciezka, as usual. (Wish he would re-write more fairy tales.) Used this with third graders to teach them to write fables. And they did get the point of always, always, always CALL HOME.

I wanted to read up on my diagnosis and this book is really helping me. I'm glad that i came across this book and I feel that this book will come in handy with informing myself and treating my self with exercise and healthy eating. Im already half way done with the book.

I was diagnosed with PCOS in 1999, before any valuable information about the condition was available. Thanks to The Ultimate PCOS Handbook, I was able to learn about PCOS and its symptoms and discovered many ways to manage the condition and reduce the symptoms or rid my body of them entirely. It's hard to hear that weight loss is often the best solution to the problem, but now that I realize how important it is, I'm willing to focus on that goal and make the changes necessary.I've often felt alone when dealing with PCOS, but this book helped me to realize thousands of other women have experienced and continue to deal with condition as well.

Very pertinent, easy-to-apply information in this book! I would highly recommend The Ultimate PCOS Handbook to anyone searching for natural ways to diminish the symptoms of PCOS.

I was diagnosed with PCOS this year (2010) and my doctor really didn't tell me much about what PCOS was. I found this book and read it and it gave a lot of details into symptoms and stories of women living with PCOS. I enjoyed the stories since it helped me to realize I wasn't alone with this.

This book is a quick read and it's full of useful information. I took notes as I read through the book and I was able to come up with a great diet plan for myself. I read through reviews on several other PCOS books and this one looked like the best option.

Extremely informative and helpful information for a woman diagnosed with PCOS. Able to comprehend with clarity!

It is an okay book. Very much like a diet book...no difference between diet books and that. Eat less carbs, sugar, etc. etc. etc. Nothing I haven't heard.

Very good information :) Must read for anyone girl, woman, or anyone infact that is curious for information on PCOS.

From the Back Cover

Set primarily in 16th-Century Chile, Isabel Allende's "Ines del Alma Mia" is an engaging, informative novel that stands out from most historical fiction novels for several reasons, including: 1) The story brings to life a strong woman, Ines Suarez, who is revealed to have been a smart, courageous leader (and not just sensual, as is so often the case in historical novels). 2) The story is told by a woman, who just happens to be one of our world's premier authors, and she brings her female sensitivities to telling a story that involves a lot of violent conflict. In a most appealing and refreshing way, you can sense a woman's touch in this novel, without it descending at all into the literary equivalent of a "chick flick". 3) The tale of conquest is recounted with rare even-handedness. In historical novels that focus on a given conflict, it seems that the author almost always takes sides, extolling the virtues of one group and demonizing their adversary. Isabel Allende empathizes with the motivations of both the Spanish conquistadors and the Mapuche resistance fighters and brings out the virtues and less noble aspects of both. She demonstrates a respect for certain character traits, regardless of who has them. "Dignos enemigos somos espanoles y mapuche: de parte y parte valentes, brutales y determinados a vivir en Chile." To be highly recommended.

A well written work. I am glad I can read it in the author's original language and that it was available on Amazon. I like to read at least one Spanish language book a year. It expands my vocabulary and understanding of the world. Isabel Allende is a fine author. The story is based on real events of history and Allende brings the period to life in an earthy fashion. Her style is complex, yet rendered with ease. Her narrative is descriptive and her characters real. I love history, but the record often offers glimpses that require a historian to fill in the blanks. Here the blanks are filled in with an admirable degree of intelligence and imagination.

I am an Isabel Allende fan, I have read most of her works. This is her best historical novel. It deals with the conquest and colonization of Chile as seen through the eyes of a very strong woman who is the lover/companion of one of the main"conquistadores"Very well written, once you start it you become lost in the story.

I don't read or watch a lot of shoujo series. I decided to pick this series up on a whim to see what all the fuss was about. And I was surprised to find a decently funny spin on the harem genre. This story begins with Serinuma, an unremarkable high school girl with a passion for anime and boy-boy relationships. Ordinarily, boys wouldn't notice her. But when her favorite anime character dies, she becomes a wreck for a week and loses about 30 pounds. Suddenly, she's attractive enough to have four guys after her, even though she'd prefer to just bask in the glow of her fantasies. You don't get a lot of characters like this in manga, and the writer provides just enough development to make them likeable. However, I do worry about this series future, as it would be easy to string this out too long and make everyone as annoying as your usual harem protagonist.

~3.5-4/5"Who decided the prince should be with the princess?"First of all, I was a little wary of this book when I heard about the weight thing. That is an issue that’s not okay to handle badly, or too blasé like Let’s Dance a Waltz did. But in this book, it took a more comedic route, and it wasn’t ignored. Which, at least for me, made it okay (or at least standable).Especially since, while the boys weren’t flirting with her when she was bigger, at least she wasn’t being bullied over it. It was just part of who she was then. No big deal. Much like her otaku side, it’s just part of her.As soon as Serinuma gets smaller waisted, three boys in particular start clinging to her, plus one who’s just her friend. She doesn’t know how to handle it, especially since she just wants them to fall in love with each other, not her. But she agrees to go on a date with them all at once. Then some of them agree to help her practice soccer and study.I like how open Serinuma is. She doesn’t hide her otaku side, even when told she should. She doesn’t decide on one of them, she gives them all a shot when she can’t decide. When she finds out how out of shape she is, she still keeps practicing like crazy for soccer. She doesn’t hide who she is, and only makes the boys like her even more.I think I’ve already got a favorite, or two, out of the boys, but I’m still not sure who’s going to get closer to her. They’re all fighting pretty hard at this point. And I like the humor, the heroine, and the characterization so far. I’m looking forward to reading more.[More of my reviews are available on my blog, Geeky Reading, to which there's a link on my profile.]

*Kiss Him, Not Me!* is a hilarious manga by a mangaka pen named Junko. Known more for her BL (boy's love) manga, this is the first major foray into a less niche and more main-stream genre/demographic. The story is a *shojo* "reverse-harem" (a group of guys going for a girl while harem series are the opposite) and slice-of-life story about a girl named Serinuma Kae.Kae is a chubby and cheerful *otaku* who is a major *fujoshi* or fan of stories about romantic boy on boy pairings. One day her favorite anime character dies in the story and she suddenly falls into a state of deep depression where she refuses to eat or leave her room for a week. When forced out of bed by her brother, she is suddenly a petite and pretty girl who guys are falling all over themselves to date.Of course, she is both flattered by this attention and frustrated, cause she is at first trying to keep her otaku side a secret and trying to enjoy the attention. In particular, the otaku stuff is not always looked at nicely in Japan, especially fujoshi. It ends up being subverted when the guys don't care, but oh well. However, this all is hilariously difficult for Kae when she keeps mentally pairing the boys up with each other due to interpreting the most mundane things in a unique manner.Yes, the premise is ridiculous, but it is fun and cute. Even though some of the guys are less endearing than others, they still act shy around Kae and her uncertainty about how to act in turn can be quite sweet. Also, they accept her for who she is. Granted, for some it's because she's "hot" now, but for some it is accepting her for real and that is really something I like seeing. The situations are drawn less "sexualized" and more "cute ", though for BL fans (or so I have read statements online that point this out) there are shout-outs amidst the cuteness to thus appeal to folks of more than one demographic. The art is very visually pleasing and fun to see and contributes greatly to the story. In fact, I'd say this is some of the better art I've seen. It captures the comedy and seriousness both of various scenes, quite well. There does seem to be some sort of negative idea at first that if you are pretty you are "better" or that "thin is better" and prettier than not, and other troubling cultural prejudices in Japan, but I hear the author subverts this later on to an extent, which I look forward to seeing.I have my idea of who she should be with eventually, as I think that certain folks, or one in particular, is more genuine in love for her. There is a female member of the harem to debut soon, I've read, which should make things interesting.Of course, there is a final issue to deal with, and that is the issue of her sudden, and *incredibly* unrealistic hotness/weight loss. In reality, starving yourself for a week will *hurt* you and when you lose massive weight you have stretch marks, and saggy skin and what not. Not a perfect, "hot" body. Don't copy this or you will have eating disorders and other health problems. Also, this is kinda irritating to have the negative "thin is better" idea at first, but as I said, it subverts it in the end, and it is just a zany way to introduce the plot.If one can't handle the beginning, that is fine. Nothing to be ashamed of there and I praise you for knowing what you can handle. I myself stay away from some tales due to issues with different stuff mentioned or what not. If you can hold your nose through the very beginning, you might find a sweet story that you like, one that actually subverts the negative stereotypes of overweight folks and otaku in Japan, and overweight folks elsewhere.Rating: 4.5/5 Stars. (Half a point for the negative messaging, though again I hear that such will get better and be subverted later on.)

First off, I love the story and I am impatiently awaiting the next in the series. The story gets 5 stars with the introduction up of a new suitor, one more villainous than our team has faced before. Unfortunately just like with a prior reviewer, I too had issues with the weak binding of the book. This book simply does not hold up. I've had several pages have already separated from the spine completely. I've had no issues with my prior books in this series, so I don't know if this is a result of some one-time manufacturing flaw or if they publisher trying cheaper material. I can only hope this weak binding is a fluke.

ordered this vol and was super excited for it but when it got here it was in terrible packaging and received water damage sometime along the way, and not only that but some idiot somewhere in this world thought it would be a good idea to put a security tag in the middle of one of the pages on this manga!!?? i mean really...who dose something like that??? im not at all happy with this and sending it back and hopefully the next one will be better.

If you love high school romance and comedy, then this manga is for you! I was absolutely hooked from reading just the first volume. Would highly reccomend this manga.

We are homeschoolers, and even when we aren't teaching from this book, our kid likes to read it on her own.

I read a lot of the reviews on this book - especially the negative reviews - and had to write my own because I think there are many ways to approach this book series. This is our first year homeschooling our 4th grade daughter and we met and grilled many of the homeschool mothers in our area on their system of teaching. One of them recommended the Wise/Bauer book "The Well-Trained Mind" which seemed to be a very good fit for both my teaching style and our daughter's learning style. "The Well-Trained Mind" recommends, of course, this series of books for teaching history. But what a lot of people are missing, I think, is that Volume 1 is meant for 1st grade, Volume 2 for 2nd grade, etc. These 4 volumes are also meant to be the first of 3 levels of teaching history as the child goes through his/her 12 years of education. In other words, these four volumes are laying the groundwork for what's to come. It's not a be-all end-all history course. The reason my approach is different is because I'm using this series of books to catch my daughter up to where a well-educated child should be by the 4th grade. Up through to the end of 3rd grade in the public school system, the only exposure she'd had to history is to the timespan just before and just after the American revolutionary war. So we had a lot of ground to cover. But I didn't want it to turn into a grind for her, so I took the authors' intentions to heart and I'm using this series to form a groundwork for a basic understanding of history. So what I'm doing is covering all four volumes in 1 year. That works out to a little over 2 months per volume or 4 chapters (for Volume 1) per week. I skipped the activity book but did buy the workbook with the quizzes. We've read to our daughter since she was a baby and she still loves to be read to, so for the 1-hour class (which I hold twice a week) I read 2 chapters to her, discussing what we're reading as I go along. She loves it and the book is easy to read from. Before class starts, I give her 2 quizzes from the 2 chapters read in the previous class. She gets about as many questions right as I would and it's just to help reinforce what I've read to her.So all the complaints about inaccuracies in the book and the author's religious slant (which I didn't find and I was looking for), they don't matter. What really matters is that my daughter enjoys learning about history (it's her favorite class) and she's building a foundation that can be built on in later years. In addition to this series and its workbooks, I also picked up "The Kingfisher History Encyclopedia." Once a week I give her homework to read assigned pages from this book to reinforce or, perhaps, to give a different point of view on what she's just learned. All history books will turn up people who will disagree with the content, will find inaccuracies in the material, or won't agree with the author's point of view. But, guess what? It doesn't matter. Your child is still young and you are filling in a background in history that his/her public school peers will never have.

Should be titled "The Story of The World: According to a Highly Selective Reading of the King James Bible: Volume 1."If you are a secular homeschooler or even a non fundamentalist christian, be warned that this "world" history book begins 7000 years ago with the "earliest people/first nomads". It imply's that farming and agriculture began some unspecified time later. Archeologists believe that agriculure began about 12,000 years ago, making all previous (and some concurrent) people hunter gatherers.

This is an amazing audio CD. I will be ordering all 4 volumes. I enjoy listening to it, and so does my 4 year old and 8 year old. I bought the companion activity book which also makes it come alive. You get a map with each chapter so your kids can see, and then hear a great narrative about where/what they are learning. Only buy 1 activity book for the family though- it has lesson plans/reccomendations for half the book, and the other half is activities/maps/hand out papers that you can pick and choose to accompany the chapter you listen to that day. You can copy multiples/handouts for your family to use per the copyright allowances listed in the book. Each chapter/track is 8-10 minutes so far, the narrator is interesting and we really enjoy history!

A little heavier on Bible stories than I'd prefer but they aren't presented as absolute fact. As a secular homeschool family we are still able to use this as our history spine without issue.

My five-year-old doesn't really enjoy fiction, so this was our bedtime story for about a month. It is easy to read aloud, and my five-year-old begged for the next in the series. I like how there are myths intertwined with the history as I think it makes it more interesting. I have a master's degree, but I don't have much of a history background, so I don't know about the accuracy of the history. The author has a definite viewpoint, but I think that makes it more interesting than a textbook. I'm learning so much and I really look forward to reading this book every night.

I wouldn't call this an entirely accurate encyclopedic approach to history but rather a collection of stories and lore that make history come to life and fun to read. It's great for getting your child interested in various stages of history that you can then delve deaper into as you wish. It has kept my sons attention even though he doesn't always enjoy reading and helped peak his interest in various topics and got him asking questions, so for that alone it's worth buying because that is what any good book should do, draw you in and compel you to learn more.
