From School Library Journal
PreS-Gr 2—This French import takes readers through all the phases of the moon by comparing its changing shape to common things using the phrase on this night. The book begins, "On this night, Matthew thinks the moon could be a bow for his arrow." As the lunar cycle continues, the moon is compared to, among other things, a banana, a smile, half a wheel of cheese, an egg, and a rowboat. Each spread features illustrations on the right-hand side, which cleverly reinforce the text on the left. The contrast between the black background and the white text, bright yellow moon, and the black or white (depending on placement) etchinglike drawings are minimal and eye-catching. A hint of the full circle of the moon is visible throughout, subtly shown in glossy black on the matte background. The last pages feature a simply illustrated explanation of how and why the moon changes shape. The title has sturdy, board book—like pages and is constructed to lie flat. VERDICT This solid introductory glimpse at the phases of the moon can be read on many different levels. Also works well as a book on shapes or a read-aloud.—Catherine Callegari, Reston Regional Library, VA

I gave this book 3 stars for it's nice aesthetic. The pages are sturdy and the illustrations are creative. That being said, I was expecting a book about moon phases, to read to my space loving 5 year old. What I received was a book about cute things that the moon reminds the writer of, in it's different states. It would have been nice if each page at least listed the name of the moon phase along with the picture. The moon phase information in the back seems like an afterthought. By the time I got to the last page, my kid lost interest. I will be returning this book.
Nice sturdy pages, good scientific as well as appropriate for young children
Great book for my 4 year old!
I absolutely love this book, as do the children to which I have read this. This is perfect for a preschool child. The artwork, the thick paper stock, the differing page textures - it all works so well. The book itself journeys through all phases of the moon... New Moon, Waxing Crescent, First Quarter, Waxing Gibbous, Full Moon, Waning Gibbous, Third Quarter, and finally the Waning Crescent. But the story pages do not refer to them as such. Instead the imagination runs wild with bows and arrows, bananas, smiles, wheels of cheese, eggs, rowboats, the sun, an owl, pregnancy, croissants, cat tails, nail clippings, and darkness. Oh what joy to see a four year old grab at the night sky later and claim he is eating a wheel of cheese! The artwork is exceptional. Every page is mostly black, with white sketches and bold yellow moon phases. The dark side of the moon is also black, but is a different texture - very smooth and reflective whereas the rest of the page has a matte finish. Children love to touch the pages and feel the tactile difference. While the majority of the book is full of wild imagination, the back page and inside board of the book give the actual phases and a short description. After a few reads, even small children will learn the phases of the moon. What a joyful book, highly recommended!
chipboard book about the different moon phases.i love the way the manufacturer/publisher utilized the printing process to illustrate the dark side vs the light side of the moon.to illustrate the dark side so it is not just mistaken as part of the book itself, a shiny varnish is used to represent the "missing" (dark) part of the moon.there are corresponding visuals (such as a pregnant lady's tummy, a cat's tail, an owl's eye, etc.) to represent the differing shapes of the moon phases.this would have been a great book for me when i was in grade school to learn the moon phases - i always got "waxing" and "waning" mixed up.this book is a wonderful introduction and reference.very pleased and very much recommended!
My girls (4 and 7) both enjoyed learning about the phases of the moon in this cute and clever book. The images are beautifully illustrated and the narrative was accessible to both ages. I appreciated how solid the book felt: it seemed durable enough to fit into the babies board book category, but was sufficiently illustrated and written to really cater to a wide range of ages. Both girls were fascinated to learn the phases, and I appreciated that there was a mini appendix in the rear of the book to satisfy the more scientifically curious. I can't say it gets a ton of replay value, so it will probably migrate to the library donation pile before long, but I am sure it will continue to delight in the next chapter of its journey!
This is a great picture book that makes the phases of the moon understandable to young readers, and those even a bit older readers who might pick this one up.The black background with yellow and white illustrations and text are eye-catching and interesting to children. While some vocabulary words may be unfamiliar to children because this story has been translated, the visual comparison the author makes with the moon to something a child already knows about is a great way for them to connect it to their own life.At the end of the book the phases of the moon are named so that older readers who might be looking for this will be able to attach the correct phase to the picture of the moon that represents that phase.I can see a wide range of ages enjoying this book, and it does a good job of explaining something that might not be easily understood.
This is an attractive and nicely done kids hardcover book. Each page covers a one of the phases of the moon. The book itself is printed on nice thick cardstock, and the black and yellow contrast of colors is very attractive and fun. For each phase of the moon, an image is shown that imagines that phase as an object, like a bow and arrow, wheel of cheese or egg. It is a cute way of making it relatable for a kid. The last page is a summary that captures all the phases again. My four year old loves this book.
