For the millions of Paul Harvey fans, this book is a loving sweet valentine to the most amazing radio personality the world even knew - pre "Rush". The book lovingly and softly told the story of a kid from Oklahoma who became a HUGE and wildly successful radio star, not because of his ability to shock, but just the opposite. Because he found the good in most situations and people. If you're looking for a hit piece - this ain't it! But if you want to warmly trace the glow of the life of Paul Harvey - from the first "Hello Americans... to his very last "Good Day"... get the book and read it. It is light reading told from a fond perspective and it will make you miss him, and his daily broadcasts "Paul Harvey News" and "The Rest of the Story". That's all I have, and as he would say... "Good Day..."

This man saw the best side of everything. And he knew how to tell a good story. Really enjoyed listening to him. Of course, today liberals would throw labels like "square" or "old fashioned" at him. But that just shows how truly dumb they are with their hateful attacks on decent people.

I've always been a fan of Paul Harvey, so this was a nice book to fill in the blanks about his life. To get a good feel for what Paul Harvey was about, do check out the "Rest of the Story" books and other Harvey books. There is no one like him on the radio these days.

Good book generally, lot's of info. BUT...there are problems!Each chapter is full of footnotes. Maybe 30-50 per chapter. That's OK, but what is involved in finding & reading these footnotes on the Kindle is almost impossible! It took me at least 3-5 minutes to find each one after guessing at what location # it might be at, then realizing I didn't note the chapter # or name (this is necessary to find the footnote), then going back to find the chapter & name, again guessing at the location the footnote might be at, let alone the problem of getting back to the chapter & page I originally found the footnote on!This whole procedure is very disruptive to the flow of the story as well as technologically challenging and a real nightmare in general!This is a weak point of the Kindle in general. But this book in particular relies so much on footnotes and has so many that it really ruins the smooth reading of the book.There is no information on the page you are reading (save the location #), no chapter # or chapter name is shown on any page beyond the 1st (title) page of each chapter (this is true of most Kindle books as well).Also, if you don't write down the location # of the page you are reading (or book mark it) you are lost when you want to return to it because the "go to furthest page read feature" takes you to the page the footnote was on which is near the end of the book!Footnotes should be denoted by the footnote #, then the chapter # and then the location #. Also, in guessing the location of where the footnote might be, it's very hard to do if you don't immediately remember the chapter # and name.As far as the content, there is much to much un-necessary description. For example, the physical appearance of a lobby in each of the many radio stations Mr. Harvey visited or worked at. Every description goes into gaudy detail of the Gothic looks of the place and have no bearing at all to the story nor are they ever referenced again. Many of these descriptions go on for many pages and are not at all necessary to the story or anything else.I got the feeling that after the 1st draft of the book was written some editor felt he could increase the size of the book 25% by adding lots of un-necessary description and details...and did!These detailed descriptions could have been so much more interesting if the words were spent describing in detail say Mr. Harvey's home or office or something that might give us further insight & clues to his personality rather than the history of where the marble used in some 1937 radio station came from & was mined and installed! There's no description or details at all about his Arizona home other than a few sentences that it existed. But loads of details about the physical looks of places that have nothing to do with the story & nobody could care less about.Still there is much good information, stories, antidotes and quotes in the book. Just super cumbersome to read being so heavily footnoted without any easy way to read the footnotes.

This book Good Day The Paul Harvey is recommended as a must read for anybody that loves to hear about a great American that lived life to the fullest.

Paul J. Batura's biography of Paul Harvey was an enjoyable read. He captured the essence of what made Paul Harvey so beloved by so many. If you grew up, like I did, listening to Paul Harvey News and Comments, you will love the book. If you did not have the privilege of living in that era, do yourself a favor and read this book about a great American!

It was an interesting book. I remember listening to "the rest of the story" when I was a kid. Even my own kids would pause in the morning when Paul Harvey came on, they also wanted to hear "the rest of the story". Worth the time spent reading it.

Overall a good book, but the misspellings detract from the enjoyment. Sax 5th Avenue? Clyde and Bonnie Parker? Would still recommend the book.

I got this book for a family christmas party...where you randomly get a wrapped gift. We open the gifts one by one so everyone can see who got what...this book was the hit of the party...everyone was jealous of the person who received the book. Also, we do live in the twin cities, which I'm sure added to the appeal of the book. It's nice to get some local history.

My brother in law saw an article about this book in our local news paper. It was on his Christmas wish list so I bought it for him. When it came in the mail, I couldn't put it down. I ended up ordering another to keep for myself. A wonderful coffee table book, for sure.

A teaching tool which is too beautiful to put down. Wonderful photos great bits of days gone by.Books such as these remind us of what we have lost by foolish decisions. This is a beautiful book with many memories for my parents and a few for me, too. I love Larry Millett's novels, too. :)

I was amazed at the size of single family homes that were standing in Minneapolis in the 1800's. We really were the cities of Castles. I never imagined we had such wealth in the early years of the Twin cities. Larry Millet has created a awesome wealth of cultural history in his book. I feel this book has given me an appreciation of how Minneapolis and St.Paul were the heart of abundance and style during their formative years. After viewing the Imitation Game, I was intrigued by Alan Turing. Since the film was supposedly inspired by the book, I purchased the book on my Kindle. To say that I was overwhelmed and disappointed by this book is an understatement. I am not a mathematical intellectual, as is Hodges, and was intimidated by the mathematical intricacies woven throughout his book. Most of which, for the layman are way too advanced. I was looking for a more intimate look at Turing which was almost impossible for Hodges to give until he admits to that at the end of this arduous journey. The film is loosely based on this book, and I use the term in the strongest sense. Hodges tries to make Turing's personal struggles readable, but his propensity for making himself sound erudite get in the way. It is clear that he is impressed with Turing, but he also makes sure that the reader will be impressed with his knowledge as well. Alan Turing was an intense personality, not the autistic enigma portrayed in the film. Many times I wanted to put the book away, but I finished it in spite of myself. If you prefer to read reference material, which is how I believe this book should be classified, then knock yourself out. It will feel like you have gone 15 rounds after you finish this tome.

"The Imitation Game" was my favorite movie of 2014. I devoured the shows on PBS about cracking Enigma. I was glad to start reading this book. Soon I wasn't so glad. The writer, a mathematician, doesn't have the gift for narrative needed to bring Turing, and the group at Bletchley Park, to life.The trivia included rather than pruned shows a lack of writing skill. For example, in early chapters about Turing's schooling, one reads nearly every note sent home by a schoolmaster. But a more major event (nailing Turing under floorboards) was glossed over in a sentence without a comment by the author as to impact, or primary source quote concerning the incident.More troubling is the utter boring chapter on Bletchley Park. How can this chapter be boring? Yet it is. The explanation and sketches of how Turing's machine worked are unsatisfactory. I didn't learn anything from the authors (and I had several advanced math classes in college). I contrast this with biographies of physicists, contemporaries of Turing but written by writers (Richard Rhodes, for example): gripping books that manage to explain quantum theory or the workings of particle accelerators quite well.Absolutely unsettling is the jarring way the author skips from topic to topic. On one page he note that Turing accepted his sexual orientation; on the next there is talk of suicide. Again, there is no comment by the author. Considering how Turing's life ended, one would expect more explication here. Related to this topic is the story of Turing and Bob Augenfeld, the young refugee Turing sponsored. Turing propositioning the minor Augenfeld would today be classed as sexual predation, yet the author glossed over it, noting that Augenfeld remained friends with Turing. An alternative explanation might be that Augenfeld hoped Turing would help get his mother out of Vienna, and did not seek to sever the relationship for this reason. This was in 1941.In summary, this book was slow reading, even for someone interested in the man and the topic. I give it 3 stars because of the importance of the topic and the many contribution Turing made to mathematics and computer sciences.

This is a re-release of a book that was first published in 1983 (and largely researched during the 10 years prior to that), so it first came out in a very different time than today--a time when World WarII secrets were still being somewhat protected, and when the details of a homosexual man's life were still not easy to explain to the average audience without giving offense. Also, it was written and published in Great Britain. As a result, there are many allusions and off-hand references that are opaque to an American living in 2015.Although the author is a gay rights activist himself, as well as a mathematician, and wrote this book in part to try to see Alan Turing's life from a sympathetic point of view, some of his narration comes across as coy to the point of obscurity--he mentions Turing's trip to Sweden, but it is not till much later that it finally becomes clear that he went there to pick up young men. It is never completely clear which of his friends were also lovers and which were just colleagues. And perhaps that was necessary when those men were still alive, or were only recently deceased, but if the book is going to be re-issued, it needed to be re-edited as well. The intro, which details places where changes should or could be made, was not an adequate substitute for a revised edition.The explanations of code breaking is detailed, but perhaps necessarily obscure as well. I still have no idea of how Turing's insights were different than what the Polish codebreakers had already accomplished. One point that was a big issue in the movie, about how the Allies should use the information that they from their ability to read the Enigma code was never mentioned in the book, yet it is a crucial question--the movie has the military allowing a ship carrying one of the codebreakers's brothers go to its death, because otherwise the Germans would know that the Brits were able to read their messages, and would then change it. This is not in the book (fine, maybe it was fiction), but it's a key aspect of game theory--how do you use your hard-won information without tipping your hand? And if you can't use it, what's the point of having it?It is a bit ironic that a book whose title implies that Alan Turing himself is the biggest enigma manages to leave him still an enigma in many ways, but that is the case.I think the aspect of the book that I most grasped and that was the most thought-provoking was Turing's ideas about machine intelligence. Turing was not actually most interested in making machines that were intelligent; he was most interested in exploring intelligence in machine form in order to understand what human intelligence actually is. He posited an extreme statement: machines can (and will some day) do everything that human brains do. But his point was to show that there was no "ghost in the machine," no special non-material "spirit" or "will" or "intuition" or "insight" necessary to explain human intelligence.Like most people, I resist this idea to some extent. Could machines (computers, that is) ever make judgments? At first, my answer is no. But then they made computers that play chess at a Grand Master level (in the 1980s!). Ok, but that seems like a sort of a stunt. Recently IBM's Watson beat Ken Jennings and Brad Rutter at Jeopardy. Still, it seems more like looking things up on Wikipedia really fast, rather than actually thinking. But then I read that Watson is actually being used to diagnose illnesses, and that computers are more accurate than physicians, less liable to be led astray by forgetting or overlooking or dismissing crucial details. Hmmm, In advance, I would have said that the ability to diagnose a disease was an example par excellence of the sort of human judgment that computers would never have. And if they can drive our cars, and avoid accidents better than human drivers? Who would have thought it? Apparently the answer is, Alan Turing would have!One off-hand remark in the afterword is that the author wonders if some day, a computer will be able to write a book such as his. Unimaginable, I think. But my daughter reminds me that computers already compose news items (rather badly, but still.) And we discuss the possibility that a basic undergraduate research paper could be composed by a computer today, and I think the answer is Yes. I can imagine that one could teach a computer to write a paper that discusses Domestic Violence, pulling together statistics on its frequency, demographics,causes, effects on children, possible solutions, and so forth.I am left still puzzled by Alan Turing, finding it hard to picture him as a man, but deeply impressed by his mind, by his foresight and his insight, and I think that perhaps in some ways, he is in fact as significant a figure as Darwin and Einstein. What a tragedy that he died so prematurely, whether his death was in fact suicide, or possibly murder, or even more unlikely, a weird accident. How fitting and how odd that he died by (apparently) eating a poisoned apple. If it were fiction, it would just be too neat.

Serious Python is an interesting book. Let’s tart with chapter 1, which is about starting your project. This chapter covers the dos and don’ts of laying out your code project. You learn about version numbering and automated checks. Each chapter ends with an interview with someone in the Python community. For chapter 1, the interview is with Joshua Harlow.Chapter 2 digs into modules, libraries and frameworks. Here you get an overview of how Python’s import system works. The author spends a couple of pages listing out useful standard libraries and also talks about using external libraries too. He even mentions safety practices when downloading from external resources and you learn about pip.For chapter 3, you learn about writing good documentation and API with Sphinx. This chapter focuses almost exclusively on the Sphinx framework, which is what the Python team uses to document Python itself. You will learn about Sphinx modules and writing your own extensions to Sphinx here.In chapter 4, the topic is timestamps and time zones. You will learn how to use Python’s datetime library as well as the super cool dateutil module, which is an external module for Python. The author also spends some time talking about serializing datetime objects and solving ambiguous times.The topic of distributing your software is front and center in chapter 5. Here you will learn about using setup.py, setup.cfg and the wheel format. You will also discover how entry points work!For chapter 6, you will dig into unit testing with Python’s unittest module. He also talks a little about ZeroMQ.If you happen to be interesting in learning how Python works with relational databases, then you’ll want to check out chapter 12. Here the author talks about various database backends and shows an example of using Flask with PostgreSQL.Finally in chapter 13, Julien covers using the six module to support writing your code for both Python 2 and 3. He also covers single dispatch and context managers in this chapter and then wraps it up by talking about the attrs package.While some of topics that are covered seem pretty obvious, I don’t actually see very many authors or bloggers talking about them all that often. For example, I only hear about scaling on rare occasions and even concurrency articles don’t come out all that often. The only real fault I can think of here is that I might have arranged the chapters in a slightly different order than the way they ended up. I would give the book a chance and check it out if you’d like to learn more about any of the above topics!

Much of this time was spent fantasizing about one day having a 1/10th or 1/4th acre homestead. During that time, the book was eye-opening as to what is possible with that little space. Having soaked up these ideas about raised beds, chickens, dwarf fruit trees, and so on for so long, when I finally got a house recently, I knew exactly what I wanted to do with it, which alone is probably worth the price of the book.But now that I have fruit trees to prune and chicks to raise, I'm not looking to this book for information. For building raised beds, I'm using the instructions from The Urban Homestead (Expanded & Revised Edition): Your Guide to Self-Sufficient Living in the Heart of the City (Process Self-reliance Series), which also details composting with worms, reducing your reliance on the energy grid, and using water more intelligently -things The Backyard Homestead doesn't even mention. Or take pruning. On page 111, "Pruning a Fruit Tree in Four Steps," Step 2 says "First shorten the branch to about a foot, then undercut the branch slightly before sawing it from above. Finally, saw off the stub, leaving a slight collar to promote good healing." These are just the kind of clear-as-mud directions that would greatly benefit from an illustration; unfortunately all that is there is a drawing of a man sawing a branch with a long-handled tool of some kind, nothing to show what exactly a collar is or how much of the remaining foot qualifies as the stub or even why he selected that particular branch. So for pruning, I attended a workshop presented by my local nursery, which was far more informative and has the advantage of pertaining entirely to where I live. Regarding chickens: There are some interesting points, like letting a fresh egg age in the fridge a week before hard-boiling so it won't be difficult to peel or selecting a dual-purpose (egg laying and meat) breed because they are more disease-resistant than specialized breeds, but nothing that will in anyway get you started. For that I'm presently using the book Chick Days: An Absolute Beginner's Guide to Raising Chickens from Hatching to Laying. For rabbits, you'll get two pages most of which just informs you that there are different breeds.The only section of The Backyard Homestead that I was able to test out in my apartment days was the section on herb gardening. I killed all of them, until getting Grow Great Grub: Organic Food from Small Spaces), which revealed why the rosemary survived but did not grow (too small a pot), why the basil died (unrelenting exposure to wind), how all of them could have benefited from mulch, and how to make simple plant foods. It also explained terms I had seen thrown around in several gardening books, like the warning to not let your plants "bolt" (which at the time I could only imagine involved my herbs running away to a more competent home). All those other books have unhelpful charts describing the exact conditions favored by each plant (type of soil, pH, full sun vs partial shade, etc) until you believe each plant should be grown in its own meticulously placed test tube. And I spent years thinking "partial shade" meant some kind of sparse, broken shade, like under a tree. Turns out the "partial" refers to time; 4-6 hours of direct sun per day compared to 8 hours of direct sun per day for "full sun." And if you've always wanted to grow herbs, but wondered what you might do with them beyond cooking, then absolutely get Making It: Radical Home Ec for a Post-Consumer World, a brilliant DIY book on everything from making your own shampoo to beer to how to slaughter a chicken (The Backyard Homestead refers you to other books for any slaughtering instructions).By all means, get The Backyard Homestead. Pour over it for hours in a coffee shop/bathtub/Cracker Barrel/escape-of-your-choice. Gaze lovingly at the beautiful, orderly homestead layouts at the beginning of the book. But think of it more as a course catalogue for college, that thick book (if they still put those out) that lists every class a college offers along with a brief description for each, rather than as the classes themselves. Use it to sketch out which topics you'd like to study, then find other resources (mentors, workshops, youtube demonstrations, books, meetup groups, feed stores, nurseries, magazines like Urban Farm) and go from there.

I bought this book at the recommendation from a friend who has her own vegetable garden. First, I checked it out at the library to see if it would be useful to me and got so excited about gardening that I decided to buy it. I had never gardened here in Virginia. I grew up in Colorado where gardening is a challenge. One of my child hood chores was weeding a garden that never produced a single vegetable. So needless to say I had a bitter root (haha) about gardening. After I heard about this book I wanted to try it for myself. This book clearly lays out what to start with as a beginner, how to do it, what to expect, and how to continue once you've got it up and running. I was totally skeptical that I could actually grow anything regardless of what this book said. I started with Spinach, red peppers, rosemary, and kaleidoscope carrots, rosemary, lavendar, bee balm, and blueberries. I did everything in pots on my deck as a trial run (will do raised beds next year now that I know I can) and my garden was a success. Now it's one of my favorite spots to be.

This book is fabulous and I've only scratched the surface reading it. Every page is informative and so helpful! I've been trying to plan a garden to feed our family for several weeks and I've been sifting through information from all across the web, but this has everything I need all in one easy to read place.This book would also be amazing to have on hand in the event of a crisis. It describes how to use plants for some medical uses and how to do all of the things described for free or as low cost as possible.I'm very happy with my purchase, just wish I'd had it sooner!

It must be a great challenge to find a balance between beginners and experienced gardeners/farmers. Even as a broad brush of the subject, The Backyard Homestead didn't' quite get it. It was well written (as most books from Storey are). But, it overstepped its title too much. On the plus side, I loved the authors example homesteads, starting with a tenth acre, and moving up to ideas for as much as a half acre. I know they are only appropriate to her area, but they generated day dreams. She then skimmed the possibilities for vegis, fruits, and even nuts. So far so good. This is followed by a long deep dive into herbs and even herb vinegar -- yuk. Next is an inspiring chapter about growing grain, which is followed by recipes which (get this) use all purpose flour. By the time the book start describing homestead livestock, my guard was up. I was able to keep a straight face through the chapters on chickens and goats. But, by the time the author tried to recommend the right dairy cow for my homestead, I was laughing. I truly hope no one buys a cow based on this advice. The tiny chapters on bee keeping, building a smoke house, foraging for wild food, and making maple syrup offered little more than what is readily available to interested web surfers. If you only buy one book on homesteading, this will not be it -- unless your promise to only be an armchair homesteader.
