I have been studying for the MCITP Enterprise Admin. I have been in the IT field for a long time and have read dozens of books. These books are good for passing the exams. They aren't anywhere near as detailed as the Unleashed books from Sams Publishing (the Orange books that go into MASSIVE detail), but they are to the point to pass the exam. You won't learn how Windows Server 2008 actually works under the hood, but you will learn what you need to pass the exams. If that is your goal, this is a good series to get. It's also a great product to start your training of Server 2008. Don't let it be the last books you buy because you won't know everything you need to know to do the job. The picture in the listing isn't quite right. The product matches the description, not the picture. 70-646 is NOT included, 70-643 IS included so don't be thrown off by this as I was after I ordered it and already had the 70-646 book. The Amazon price is incredible and you won't find it better anywhere else - trust me, I've looked. So, if you are planning on getting this, stop your search here and just buy it from Amazon. This set also includes 4 x 15% off vouchers for the exams. That brings the exam prices down to $106.25 each from $125.00. That will save you $75.00 so really it's even cheaper than the price listed! Happy reading!

I have read the first book. OK, but not spectacular. THEN, I tried to take tests. I could usually finish the review tests, but I only have 50% success rates with the certification test. The 50% failure? I get two seperate types of errors. They occur regularly during scoring of the finished test. After 2 hours of tearing my hair out to figure out the answers, the test crashes. First it crashes on Vista with printer errors. I can not print any questions, or answers. But at least I can get a score.I read that some of these errors are caused by Vista (which is hilarious, since these tests cover the server version of Vista). So, I setup a virtual XP window. I then took another 2 hours to run the test in the XP virtual machine, and this time it popped up an "Unanticipated error on timer" and updated it every second. I clicked and clicked on the OK and cancel buttons, but I could never keep up with the flood of error windows popping up. I found ridiculous answers on the internet from the software company that makes this program. It says "hi all: the problem turns out to be related to User Account Control somehow".. then he goes on to recommend to uninstall it, then toggle the UAC to on or off, then reinstall it. Then he has the gall to say "Sorry about that."... then he says "Have A Great Day!"I know this is a canned signature, but I almost threw my monitor out my second floor window when I read the 'Sorry about that' followed by "Have a Great Day" from a customer support person.I normally don't bother to complain about something like this but after paying almost 200 dollars then I can not successfully take 1 test (so far) in 3? And the company is not offering any repair updates, or anything? I just can't stand it.I just want to take the tests, and IF IT CRASHES, I want to be able to save the results and recover them and print them out again. that is just poor design. If you purchase these tests, please load the software and click on random answers as you run through it a few times. If you get a crash, then think hard if you want to take lots of 2 hour tests, and NEVER GET ANY ANSWER OR SCORES!!!!!how upsetting that is.Calvin E. Thomas

WARNING: JUST MAKE SURE THESE TESTS ARE STILL BEING OFFERED BEFORE YOU BUY THE BOOKS!That being said ...Certification classes glaze over generalized topics, giving you an idea of what you're supposed to know for the test and then say "well just take practice tests before you take your test" to get themselves off the hook for charging you so much. These books actually cover the subjects you need to know and understand in depth, and in terms anyone in IT can understand. If you can find the time to read all these (and a quiet place to study), and follow along with the exercises using Virtual Machines (many are free), those practice tests won't seem anywhere near as intimidating and impossible. My only criticism: the included install disks do NOT come with any activation codes. This was probably left unresolved because the server disks last for so long before you have to actually activate. This means you won't get to actually practice KMS, but that's a drop in the ocean compared to the rest of what you need to know.

I've only read the first two books so far.I'm a visual learner. Microsoft seems to be going the way of requiring more be done at a command prompt vs. with a GUI. While this is a good thing for automation purposes, it's going back to the days where people have to memorize commands. While this, in itself, is not a reflection on the authors of the books, I would appreciate more screen-shots and more conceptual drawings to drive-home the teachings. The good: It's a great value. I could have spent more money on other books and practice exams that wouldn't have provided as much value. Plus, there's a coupon inside giving you 15% off of all the exams (worth ~$60)!Make sure you look-up the Microsoft KB article listing all the errors in the books before reading them! There are several.

I'm going through the first few lessons now and at the end of each lesson it suggests that you take a practice test to reinforce what you've learned. Well there is NO WAY to take a test for just that lesson. The practice test includes topics from ALL over the book and the program is poorly designed. It's like it was designed by a programming student reading a "Programming for Dummies" book.So answering most of the questions is tough. It's demoralizing to say the least.I think I'll look for other testing programs before actually taking the tests. The quality of the books content is tough to say since it's hard to take a test directed at what you've read.

This Pack is amazing. Has the four books used on MCITP certification. Has a good cost-benefit and a DVD with a lot of extra material. Recommend to everyone.

#117 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

I’ve never read a book that resonated with me on such a personal level. I struggle to understand why, and what I keep coming back to is that all-too frequently this world we live in has me feeling overloaded, overwhelmed, and off-kilter. This book feels like an oasis of peace in the swirl of a hurricane. I savored many of the chapters, and found that Maria’s words kept bringing me “back to center.” I’ve Been Thinking is, quite simply, a wonderful book, and it will be a permanent fixture on my nightstand.

I'm 65, recently retired and lost in this confusing world now. When I saw Maria Shriver on the "Today" show, listening to her about this new book, I knew I needed to read it. It inspires hope in what will come in the future. I've started rosary meditation with this new year beginning, and it has calmed me down. She focuses on issues, some of us have at this time in life. This 24/7 news cycle, keeps me on edge, kids moving out and starting families of their own, and my own moving out of my house and living a simpler life. Being alone a lot and missing family time, busyness and jobs keeping us separated from one another. But she inspires me to have Hope. Hope that this is but a moment in time, thingswill get better. I'm sure I will re-read her book over and over as I re evaluate my life and how I want my story to read. She has given me HOPE. Thank you Maria.

In this personal, honest book, Maria Shriver welcomes us into her thought processes, her life, and what she’s learned. While reading my review copy, I felt as if she’d invited me over for a cup of tea to talk about her life. The book contained so many pearls of wisdom from her, and from countless other deep thinkers—poets, philosophers, and more—people of diverse faiths, beliefs, and professions, who offered words that we can all live by. Written in short readable chapters with Shriver’s own prayers at the end of each, it’s perfect for periods of meditation. She touches on aspects of human life that we all experience—gratitude, regret, joy, family truths, mental health, aging, empty nesting, sorrow, happiness, mothering, rest, and reflection. This will be a book that I underline, re-read, give to others, and keep by my bedside.

This is a beautiful book, both inside and out. Maria touches on what really makes life meaningful and reflects on what is needed to live a life that matters. I especially resonated with her thoughts about entering a new phase of motherhood--one that requires letting go of the ties to our children as they venture on their own. What I like most about this book is that you can open it to any page and instantly find bits of wisdom that will guide you through your daily life.

One of the best books I have read. Starting to read it a 2nd time. Can relate to so much in each chapter. Makes you want to stop and think about things in your life and how to change it. I now read ma chapter every day before going to school to teach

While I much appreciated Maria's honesty, her sincerity, and her writing, this book just didn't resonate with me personally. I think the intent of the book is to serve as a nightstand motivation read that you can reach for and get bite sized pieces of wisdom and motivation. The book is broken up into various topics including change, aging, gratitude, love, etc, with each topic spanning no more than 1-3 pages, followed by a daily prayer at the end. I liked the fact that Maria stated up front for the reader to take what works for them from her writing, and leave the rest while also acknowledging that "God" as she references in the book means something different to each person. So, while there was alot to like, this book for me personally, just wasn't substantive enough to make it one that I would reach for when I need a substantive dose of inspiration. My personal feeling was that it felt alot like cotton candy, soft, sweet and pleasant for the first 5 seconds, but left me wanting more. Beautiful sentiments, just not much lasting substance that I felt I could use.

I HAVE ALL BUT ONE OF MARIA SHRIVER'S BOOKS. SHE IS A WONDERFUL WRITER AND A COMPASSIONATE PERSON. I ENJOYED ALL HER BOOKS. I HOPE SHE CONTINUES WRITING. SHE DID A WONDERFUL JOB RAISING HER KIDS. YOU NEVER HEAR ANYTHING BAD ABOUT THEM AND THEY WERE NEVER IN THE NEWS. SHE WRITES AS THOUGH SHE WERE TALKING WITH THE PERSON READING THE BOOKS. THEY ARE A JOY TO READ. DEFINITELY WORTH BUYING.

This is not your regular self-help book; nor a kiss and tell; and not a "poor me" look at what I've been through in my life book. Rather Maria Shriver becomes a gentle guide rowing our life boat through trials and tribultation in the river of life. Maria becomes a "sharing sister," opening up about her observations and experiences of life to the reader. Her courage to share allows the reader to relate to similiar situations in their life. The book is filled with grace, love, and care of the subjects she addresses. I highly recommend "I've been thinking..." as a gift to a friend or a gift to yourself.

Great book! Used it to lead a study for my men's group. Really challenging and pushes you to separate biblical truth from worldly wisdom on financial issues. If you're looking for something to make you feel good about living a luxurious life while imagining that is God's purpose in blessing you financially, you'll probably want to look elsewhere. If you want to really understand how God calls us to invest the blessings he provides us then check out this book.

Very good book. It should be titled, "Being a Good Steward of All God's Stuff" because it deals with so much more than money. Alcorn discusses solid ways of thinking that will change how the reader sees their interaction with the stuff God has entrusted to them. Everything from money to possessions to children and relationships. I also read Alcorn's "The Treasure Principal" a few years back, but didn't enjoy it like this one because that one seemed focus on giving alone. This one encompasses much more. Again, probably mis-titled, but a great book.

This book was recommended from materials I studied with Crown Financial. Between those aforementioned materials and this book, my view of finances has had a paradigm shift of sorts. I have always avoided money about books by Christians for two reasons. 1) They are usually unbiblical "health and wealth" gospel, "get rich quick", "God is my slot machine" type books written for greedy American Christian audiences, or 2) they are written to give you a guilt complex in order to reach even deeper into your pockets to contribute to the Kingdom - read between the lines - to their church or para-church organization. THANK GOD, THIS IS NEITHER OF THESE TYPES OF BOOK! I love the fact that this book saturates itself in Scripture and helps us wrestle with where we are laying up treasure.

This book has opened my eyes to God's thoughts about His money and how I am to take care of it. If you struggle with money management.....get it! If you do well with money management.....Get it. Take notes, have your bible open and read a page or two a day and study this topic. It's amazing!

I didn't know before this book that my tithe money should come off the gross amount of my check and not the net amount. I have made the change of tithing from my gross and God continues to bless me with all of my needs and I still have money left over for plenty of wants. It's a powerful book and different ideas from the book run through my head often.

The book was in great shape when I received it. As for the content, Randy Alcorn did a great job of using scripture to address issues in our society...like materialism, pursuit of wealth and he challenged you to have a Christ-centered focus on money. As a financial adviser I would have liked more examples of biblical wisdom practically applied to your financial life.

There are so many strategies for getting rich and making it big. But God's plan is simple: give a tithe to church and save a tithe and do it consistently. In that way you are building the kingdom and building wealth. Building wealth also means working with experts to find the best investments, and working with the best charities or churches to make sure that they are good stewards. So it is a very long term and accountable stand. Randy Alcorn has other information to help make a well rounded approach to all aspects of handling money.

We have had a discussion about money in our church, and this answers questions to the open-minded individual who wants to know. Scriptually sound.

By age eleven, Lucy had lived at a staggering 30 or more different addresses, being passed from stranger to stranger every few months. Born to a homeless single mother, herself the victim of abuse and neglect, Lucy was merely the next generation in her family's chaotic history.Without any sense of stability, it's amazing Lucy held up as well as she did - to most people who met her, the little girl seemed quiet and eager to please, due to her lifetime of trying to fit into the households of strangers. Yet Lucy was internalizing her pain and isolation. Beneath the surface was a girl who was brimming with anger at a world who didn't want her, through absolutely no fault of her own. Never having had the support, Lucy struggled to keep up with her schoolwork and she also dealt with her anxiety through food. All in all, at the tender age of eleven, it seemed that everyone had already given up on Lucy. Then Lucy came to live in yet another foster home. Thanks to Cathy Glass, an experienced carer, Lucy slowly began to deal with her past and to build a solid sense of self for both the present and future. And, as Glass soon discovered, at the root of it all was Lucy's simple wish -- to have someone to love her. Once she had that, Lucy could truly conquer anything.Having read many of Glass' other books about fostering, I can say with confidence this one holds up to her usual excellent standard. However, as Lucy's story has been intertwined with those of other children, as Glass eventually adopts her, this book was especially anticipated and welcome.Best wishes to both mother and daughter, having found one another when life could so easily have sent them down another path! It seems it was truly meant to be.

I stumbled across a Cathy Glass book that was listed with several other books by various authors. That was the beginning for me of wanting to read more -- so far I've read three and have purchased three more to come next .I am terribly impressed with the way Cathy is able to gain trust of these poor abused children and then slowly (at the child's own speed) make them feel safe, understood, and especially cared for. She works so patiently and helps them slowly open like a beautiful flower while giving them self confidence and helping them to realize that none of it was their fault that they were so badly treated. What an awesome gift to give to an abused child. To those readers that hesitate about reading this type of book because they can't deal with hearing of the things done to these children (I am one of those people), rest assured that it is not written that way. Stories are written around the event of being visited by Social Services and what transpires until they are able to move on from there to find their "forever family". I highly recommend her books but don't be surprised if you get "hooked" on them.

I just finished "Will you love me" last night and WOW! When you told her she got to stay I had tears dripping off my chin. ALL she ever wanted was a family and home she could call her own. I was so worried about the lack of food she was eating and was worried about organ shut down because of it, that did scare me a bit in the book. Lucy you are the luckiest lady in the whole world. You have the best Mom that one could ever ask for. I truly am sorry the system failed you so badly and took so long to get you to your for-ever Mom/Mum! Cathy I praise you from the bottom of my heart, coming from being adopted at 12 yrs old when my birth Mom/Mum was killed in a car crash. My Mom's best friend at the time adopted me but she was only 12 yrs older then me at 24 yrs old. I lost my dear Mom/Mum in 2008 and it still breaks my heart that I lost my 2nd Mom/Mum to early. I first found your book "damaged" this year when I got a kindle, and I have gone and read I think all the rest of your books. I have them on my kindle but I might have to order the whole collection for my book collection, so that I can share them with some of my friends who read. They of course have not heard of your books as I have never seen them in any stores, and I am always scanning ALL the books, so I would not have missed these! I do hope this is not the last story you have, (not meaning I want more kids to be hurt and go into care!) but I know that there are so many kids out there going through this. The wonderful story of how Lucy became your legal daughter was by far the most touching of all. I had just finished the book about Alice when I stated Lucy's book, so at the end of Lucy's book when you get Alice I figure I was already ahead! THANK YOU so MUCH, not just for your wonderful books, but most important to for being a foster Mom and a carer who really DOES care! Bless you and all the children who come through your home. I hope to see more updates of each of the kids on your website, and I look often to see if there are any updates, hoping in anticipation! I will have to say your editors have to be in tears the whole time they work on your books, bless them for helping you put out some awesome books! Sad but true!

Lucy's life started out very sad, the time she spent with her mother, all of the moving she had to do, social workers coming in and out of her life but not really helping. Finally, at the age of eleven, Lucy met Cathy Glass, and life started to get better. Lucy finally had stability in her life, and she finally had someone who truly cared for her. Cathy warns that Lucy's story is heartbreaking, and it is, but it is also inspiring. Cathy has touched so many lives, and helped so many children, but this story gives me hope that one day there won't be so many kids left thinking that life is hopeless. The world could use more people like Cathy Glass. I am touched each time I read one of her books. Captivating from beginning to end, "Will You Love Me?" is one of the best books I have ever read. I am very happy that Lucy found Cathy and her children. I am looking forward to reading more from Cathy Glass as soon as I can.

Many Moons: Learn about the different phases of the moon

From School Library Journal

PreS-Gr 2—This French import takes readers through all the phases of the moon by comparing its changing shape to common things using the phrase on this night. The book begins, "On this night, Matthew thinks the moon could be a bow for his arrow." As the lunar cycle continues, the moon is compared to, among other things, a banana, a smile, half a wheel of cheese, an egg, and a rowboat. Each spread features illustrations on the right-hand side, which cleverly reinforce the text on the left. The contrast between the black background and the white text, bright yellow moon, and the black or white (depending on placement) etchinglike drawings are minimal and eye-catching. A hint of the full circle of the moon is visible throughout, subtly shown in glossy black on the matte background. The last pages feature a simply illustrated explanation of how and why the moon changes shape. The title has sturdy, board book—like pages and is constructed to lie flat. VERDICT This solid introductory glimpse at the phases of the moon can be read on many different levels. Also works well as a book on shapes or a read-aloud.—Catherine Callegari, Reston Regional Library, VA

I gave this book 3 stars for it's nice aesthetic. The pages are sturdy and the illustrations are creative. That being said, I was expecting a book about moon phases, to read to my space loving 5 year old. What I received was a book about cute things that the moon reminds the writer of, in it's different states. It would have been nice if each page at least listed the name of the moon phase along with the picture. The moon phase information in the back seems like an afterthought. By the time I got to the last page, my kid lost interest. I will be returning this book.

Nice sturdy pages, good scientific as well as appropriate for young children

Great book for my 4 year old!

I absolutely love this book, as do the children to which I have read this. This is perfect for a preschool child. The artwork, the thick paper stock, the differing page textures - it all works so well. The book itself journeys through all phases of the moon... New Moon, Waxing Crescent, First Quarter, Waxing Gibbous, Full Moon, Waning Gibbous, Third Quarter, and finally the Waning Crescent. But the story pages do not refer to them as such. Instead the imagination runs wild with bows and arrows, bananas, smiles, wheels of cheese, eggs, rowboats, the sun, an owl, pregnancy, croissants, cat tails, nail clippings, and darkness. Oh what joy to see a four year old grab at the night sky later and claim he is eating a wheel of cheese! The artwork is exceptional. Every page is mostly black, with white sketches and bold yellow moon phases. The dark side of the moon is also black, but is a different texture - very smooth and reflective whereas the rest of the page has a matte finish. Children love to touch the pages and feel the tactile difference. While the majority of the book is full of wild imagination, the back page and inside board of the book give the actual phases and a short description. After a few reads, even small children will learn the phases of the moon. What a joyful book, highly recommended!

chipboard book about the different moon phases.i love the way the manufacturer/publisher utilized the printing process to illustrate the dark side vs the light side of the moon.to illustrate the dark side so it is not just mistaken as part of the book itself, a shiny varnish is used to represent the "missing" (dark) part of the moon.there are corresponding visuals (such as a pregnant lady's tummy, a cat's tail, an owl's eye, etc.) to represent the differing shapes of the moon phases.this would have been a great book for me when i was in grade school to learn the moon phases - i always got "waxing" and "waning" mixed up.this book is a wonderful introduction and reference.very pleased and very much recommended!

My girls (4 and 7) both enjoyed learning about the phases of the moon in this cute and clever book. The images are beautifully illustrated and the narrative was accessible to both ages. I appreciated how solid the book felt: it seemed durable enough to fit into the babies board book category, but was sufficiently illustrated and written to really cater to a wide range of ages. Both girls were fascinated to learn the phases, and I appreciated that there was a mini appendix in the rear of the book to satisfy the more scientifically curious. I can't say it gets a ton of replay value, so it will probably migrate to the library donation pile before long, but I am sure it will continue to delight in the next chapter of its journey!

This is a great picture book that makes the phases of the moon understandable to young readers, and those even a bit older readers who might pick this one up.The black background with yellow and white illustrations and text are eye-catching and interesting to children. While some vocabulary words may be unfamiliar to children because this story has been translated, the visual comparison the author makes with the moon to something a child already knows about is a great way for them to connect it to their own life.At the end of the book the phases of the moon are named so that older readers who might be looking for this will be able to attach the correct phase to the picture of the moon that represents that phase.I can see a wide range of ages enjoying this book, and it does a good job of explaining something that might not be easily understood.

This is an attractive and nicely done kids hardcover book. Each page covers a one of the phases of the moon. The book itself is printed on nice thick cardstock, and the black and yellow contrast of colors is very attractive and fun. For each phase of the moon, an image is shown that imagines that phase as an object, like a bow and arrow, wheel of cheese or egg. It is a cute way of making it relatable for a kid. The last page is a summary that captures all the phases again. My four year old loves this book.

Squids Will Be Squids: Fresh Morals, Beastly Fables, by Jon Scieszka

Amazon.com Review

Every once in a while a book crosses our desks that makes us sit quietly delighted--except for a few squeaks of unmitigated joy--and this oversized, energized, stylized, highly prized book of fables is one of them. Jon Scieszka has a simple philosophy of the fable: "If you can't say something nice about someone, change the guy's name to Donkey or Squid." After all, the alleged Aesop did it. Squids Will Be Squids offers lessons such as "Everyone knows frogs can't skateboard, but it's kind of sad that they believe everything they see on TV." Sure, it's goofy, but it's also saying to kids, "Don't believe everything you see on TV." In "Duckbilled Platypus vs. Beefsnakstick," the bragging platypus and his beefy buddy teach us "Just because you have a lot of stuff, don't think you're so special." Of course, there is nothing heavy-handed here--morals such as "He who smelt it, dealt it" and "Elephants never forget, except sometimes" satirically prance amid the more heartfelt snippets of sagacity. Scieszka and illustrator Lane Smith are unparalleled in their eccentricity and unrelenting in their boyish, twisted-yet-innocent zeal. In co-creations from The Stinky Cheese Man and Other Fairly Stupid Tales to The True Story of the 3 Little Pigs to Math Curse, Scieszka's wacko sense of humor and Smith's quirky, always gorgeous artwork thrillingly congeal in Molly Leach's creative, exuberant design. We see many picture books that are better suited for adults than kids, but this fine specimen is truly meant for goofballs of all ages. (Click to see a sample spread. From Publishers Weekly

Scieszka and Smith, creators of The True Story of the Three Little Pigs and The Stinky Cheese Man and Other Fairly Stupid Tales, turn their attention away from fairy tales to reinvent the fable, thinly disguising sage bits of advice as pithy morals. Foxes and grapes are too pedestrian for these veteran absurdists, who tackle boastfulness in "Duckbilled Platypus vs. BeefSnakStikR" and who denounce vanity in the story of a skateboarding frog. Unusual characters notwithstanding, each piece highlights an everyday, modern situation in the manner of Aesop's classics. Topics in these 18 tales hit the bull's-eye, running the gamut from the toxic clique (Shark, Wasp and Bacteria wonder why no one eats lunch at their table; "Moral: Think about it") to the dynamics of a group project (Rock, Scissors and Paper all blame one another for their bad grade; "Moral: Shoot") to handling friends and family. In "Termite, Ant, & Echidna," for instance, foolish Ant throws aside his best friend when he meets a new playground pal, realizing too late that "Echidna is another name for Spiny Anteater." Scieszka ventures deep into child appeal territory, as in a gas-passing anecdote about a skunk, musk ox and cabbage ("Moral: He who smelt it, dealt it"). Smith ardently keeps pace with Scieszka's leaps of fancy, lending credence to a talking piece of toast, a walrus with a phone and a spiny, spiteful blowfish. In one full-bleed painting, little green Grasshopper cowers in the giant shadow of his mother as she grills him about his homework; strokes of eggplant-colored paint extend the sweeping size of her tentacle-like appendages, while splatters of softer shades suggest the sweat from her brow. In another, the titular fable, Smith utilizes a cartoon-like progression of panels to contrast the animated expressions of Deer, Mouse and Rabbit as they enthusiastically attempt to plan an outing with that of the deadpan, naysayer Squid. Meanwhile the design, with text printed in three typefaces of multiple sizes and colors, drives home each moral. The oversize format allows for a variety of page layouts, not to mention an in-your-face attitude that will hold readers' rapt attention. Unlike Paul and Marc Rosenthal's satiric effort in Yo, Aesop! Get a Load of These Fables (Children's Forecasts, Mar. 23), this crafty volume pays tribute to the original fables' economy and moral intent. Scieszka and Smith thriftily present one tale per spread, and beneath this duo's playful eccentricity readers will discover some powerful insights into human nature. Ages 7-9. In children's literature, the main character usually is the cover subject and title such as "Charlotte's Web," "Froggy Plays Soccer," and even "Harry Potter," because the targeted audience is assumed not to be sophisticated enough to interpret indirect meanings. Then there is the trio of Jon, Lane and Molly, who, like Maurice Sendak, love to thumb their noses at convention. "Squids Will Be Squids," (a play on "it is what it is," perhaps?) is not about the ocean life of squids - it is a collection of wacky stories with morals. Apparently young readers were sophisticated enough to figure that out using the cover art and cheeky tone as their guide. The five and nine-year old I read this book with laughed with abandon even if they didn't always get the inside jokes behind the stories or the morals. Bathroom humor like "He who smelt it dealt it," was a big hit as was "It takes one to know one." I wasn't crazy about this work but I did love the title, and its exuberant, devil-may-care attitude and the numerous double entendres. The layout and design are extraordinary. There's plenty in here to entertain little and big readers. This is not a read alone book, though, even though it's geared for the read-alone age group of 4-8. The power in this work comes in sharing the experience. Otherwise I think it will fall flat. The moral to this review of "Squids will be Squids: Fresh Morals Beastly Fables" is "Never judge a book by its cover."

This book is hilarious. It is so snarky. I'm a big Jon Scieszka fan, have been since I was little, and want my son to have his books. My son is 6 and understood most of the humor in this book, but he is an old soul. I'd say this book would be better suited for 8 and up. The tales are hilarious, the humor is unique, and the artwork is AWESOME.The book is made up of numerous stories, about 2 pages long each. The characters in all of them are crazy looking...almost Tim Burton-like. The stories are enjoyable for both kids and adults. Overall this is a really fun book for anyone who likes off-the-wall humor.

A favorite book for many years now. Reading it with my grandchildren, I used and encouraged much inflection and varied voicing for different characters. Each story is unique and wonderful fun, though some are a bit gross. We still quote the title story, "Squids Will Be Squids," in our communications in person, by texts, and on Facebook -- "Great!" said deer will elicit always "Great!" said mouse.

I don't really understand the reviews here: firstly, who says that "children's books" are only for children? If you (the adult) enjoyed it, seems like money well-spent to me. Secondly, there seems to be a large number of humor-challenged adults and children. My wife and I (who are not children) think it is funny, and so does our two year old son, who also LOVES Cowboy and Octopus, which has the same sort of off-kilter sensibility. The comments that the "morals are not appropriate" are really strange to me -- the morals are the punchlines to what are extended jokes (which are funny, because the authors are quite observant).

Not really for kids

I got this book for a friend with two boys, ages 5 and 7. Neither boy "gets" the humor yet, but I think they will in a year or two. They're still at that stage where they are trying to understand what makes a joke funny (and failing), so maybe your 5 and 7 year olds are a little more comedically advanced. The drawings are great though, and those boys will "get it" soon enough. :)

I use these stories in my 9th grade classroom as a way of introducing Animal Farm. Aesop is classic (and we use those stories, too), but kids really connect with these modern fables. I know the book is meant for younger children, but it's a credit to Scieszka that his work is sophisticated enough to appeal to all "ages and stages."

great book and illustration but the binding is weird and the font is awful - it is impossible for my 7 year old to read it, and he's an excellent reader. the book closes on its own too easily. I could flatten it open but then I'd end up damaging the spine. oh well.

Probably a little more adult than child oriented, but clever Sciezka, as usual. (Wish he would re-write more fairy tales.) Used this with third graders to teach them to write fables. And they did get the point of always, always, always CALL HOME.
